Lullaby – Sidonie Bonnec

I was very intrigued by the book „Lullaby” by Sidonie Bonnec, primarily because of its cover, which gave me the impression that I was about to discover a dark, unsettling, and perhaps even slightly frightening story. The synopsis also piqued my curiosity, especially with the idea of a young woman who starts working for a wealthy family in what appears to be a perfect setting, only for things to gradually become suspicious. I was expecting a psychological thriller that would keep me on edge and constantly make me wonder what was hiding beneath the surface. Unfortunately, although I liked the premise of the story, I felt myself becoming increasingly disconnected from it as I progressed through the book.

The story follows Emmylou, a young woman from France who moves to England to work as an au pair. Her decision comes after a difficult period in her life, marked by the death of her best friend, Morgane, who died by suicide. Her loss continues to affect her, and Emmylou is trying to find a new purpose in life and move forward, even though her past still weighs heavily on her. Her new job seems like a good opportunity, and she hopes that this change will help her build a better life. However, she has no idea that she is entering an environment where she will have increasingly more reasons to feel uneasy.

Emmylou moves to Hidden Grove, an exclusive residential community near London, where wealthy families live in elegant houses surrounded by manicured gardens and expensive cars. Everything appears well-organized, and the residents give the impression of leading carefree lives. The young woman is hired by James and Monica White to look after their two boys, Lewis and Simon. At first, the new job seems to be exactly what she was looking for, but she soon realizes that the atmosphere in the house is far from ordinary. Behind the image of a respectable family lie tensions, rules that are difficult to understand, and things that no one seems willing to talk about.

James White is one of the characters who contributes to this feeling of unease. At first glance, he appears to be a wealthy man whose life is perfectly in order, but his behavior and certain details he shares raise questions. Monica, his wife, is more distant and seems to have problems of her own, which she tries to conceal behind an elegant and controlled appearance. Their relationship is not as straightforward as it seems, and Emmylou begins to notice tensions she cannot explain. The more she tries to understand the family she works for, the more she feels that she is learning fewer concrete details and encountering more and more questions.

The children are not without their own mysteries, either. Simon is the younger boy Emmylou is supposed to look after, while Lewis, his older brother, draws attention because of his health condition and sometimes unusual behavior. Lewis uses a crutch and seems to inhabit an inner world that Emmylou struggles to understand. His interest in religion and some of his reactions make the young woman wonder what is really going on within the White family. Instead of finding answers, she notices more and more details that do not add up and begins to feel increasingly uncomfortable in her own home.

Besides getting to know the White family, Emmylou also tries to become acquainted with the other residents of the community. Mitchel and Holly, another couple living in Hidden Grove, initially seem more open and friendly. Comparing them with her employers, Emmylou begins to wonder why things are so different from one household to another and why she always feels she has to be careful about what she says and does around the Whites. Gradually, she realizes that Hidden Grove is not just an upscale neighborhood but also a closed community where relationships between people are more complicated than they appear. There are unwritten rules, strange rituals, and secrets that no one seems willing to reveal.

I liked the idea of a place where everything appears perfect on the outside, but where, once you look a little closer, you begin to notice all sorts of unsettling things. I think this is a great premise for a psychological thriller, especially because Emmylou is an outsider who is unfamiliar with the rules governing the community. The reader discovers things alongside her, and the lack of clear explanations creates a sense of uncertainty. You never know exactly whom you can trust or whether everything that frightens the protagonist has a genuine explanation.

In fact, this was one of the aspects I enjoyed most about the story. As Emmylou notices more and more strange things, you begin to wonder whether something suspicious is really happening or whether she is simply interpreting certain situations in an exaggerated way. The young woman is far from home, going through a difficult period in her life, and feeling increasingly isolated, so it is only natural to wonder how much these circumstances influence the way she sees the world around her. This very uncertainty kept me reading. Even though I was not always fully invested in the plot, I wanted to find out whether her suspicions were justified and how everything would eventually unfold.

Unfortunately, my main problem with this book was the author’s writing style. I often felt that there were too many thoughts appearing one after another, without a sufficiently clear connection between them. The narrative jumps abruptly from one idea to another, shifting from present events to memories, observations, or reflections that seem to appear without any obvious reason. Instead of helping me understand the characters better, these changes sometimes made me lose track of the story. There were passages where I felt the narrative was drifting away from what was actually important, and when it returned to the plot, I found it difficult to reconnect with it.

At one point, the way certain thoughts were presented seemed so disorganized that I felt as though I were missing pages from the book. Some ideas seemed to have no natural continuation, and the transitions between passages were so abrupt that I began to wonder whether there might also be an issue with the translation. I am not necessarily saying that this was the case, but it was an impression I had while reading. I would have liked the story to be better structured and Emmylou’s thoughts to be integrated into the narrative more naturally. I believe this would have helped me connect with the character on a deeper level and experience the atmosphere the author was trying to create more intensely.

I am sorry I was not more captivated by this story because I genuinely found its central premise interesting. A young woman trying to start over ends up in an isolated community where people hide secrets and things are far from being as simple as they appear. Added to this are the protagonist’s painful past and her constant uncertainty about what she sees and feels. All these elements could have made for an excellent psychological thriller, at least for my taste. However, I felt that the story’s potential was never fully realized, and the issues with the writing had a considerable impact on my reading experience.

It is also worth mentioning that this is Sidonie Bonnec’s debut novel. Perhaps her lack of experience shows in the way the narrative is constructed and certain ideas are connected. I do not believe a debut novel has to be perfect, but I think this particular story would have benefited from more attention to the writing itself. The author starts with an intriguing premise and manages to create an unsettling atmosphere, but her writing style did not always help me stay engaged with what was happening.

Overall, „Lullaby” was a read that piqued my curiosity but ultimately failed to win me over completely. I enjoyed the mystery surrounding the White family and the Hidden Grove community, as well as the feeling that something was wrong, even when it was impossible to pinpoint exactly what. I kept reading because I wanted to uncover the truth and see how everything would come together, but I never felt as invested in the story as I would have liked. The writing style was the main reason the book did not work as well for me, which is a shame considering how promising the premise was.
