„A Very Bad Thing” a fost a doua mea întâlnire cu J.T. Ellison și, după ce am închis cartea, pot spune că am regăsit multe dintre lucrurile care mi-au rămas în minte și la primul roman citit de la autoare. Stilul ei de scriere este foarte asemănător: construiește încet atmosfera, pune accent pe secrete, pe trecutul personajelor și pe numeroasele perspective din care este spusă povestea. Dacă îți plac thrillerele psihologice și domestice, sunt convinsă că vei găsi aici suficiente elemente care să îți stârnească interesul.
Povestea o are în centru pe Columbia Jones, o scriitoare celebră, aflată în cel mai bun moment al carierei sale. Cărțile ei sunt bestselleruri, iar un film inspirat din opera sa urmează să fie lansat. Totul pare perfect până în ultima seară a turneului de promovare, când prezența unei persoane din public o tulbură profund. A doua zi dimineață, Columbia este găsită moartă într-o baltă de sânge, iar vestea șochează atât familia și apropiații, cât și cititorii care o admirau.
După moartea ei, în prim-plan ajunge Darian, fiica și publicista autoarei, care încearcă să facă față pierderii și haosului creat în jurul acestui caz. În același timp, ancheta scoate la lumină tot mai multe detalii despre trecutul Columbiei, iar imaginea perfectă pe care și-o construise începe să se destrame. Un detectiv hotărât să afle adevărul și o jurnalistă care nu renunță până nu descoperă fiecare secret contribuie la o investigație din ce în ce mai complicată. Pe măsură ce apar noi informații, lista suspecților crește, iar aproape fiecare personaj pare să ascundă ceva.
Deși premisa mi s-a părut foarte interesantă, am simțit că prima jumătate a romanului avansează destul de greu. Mult timp am avut impresia că povestea se învârte în jurul acelorași informații, fără să facă pași importanți înainte. Ritmul este lent, iar momentele cu adevărat tensionate apar destul de târziu, lucru care mi-a făcut lectura mai dificilă decât mă așteptam.
Un alt aspect care mi-a dat bătăi de cap a fost numărul mare de personaje. Apar multe nume, fiecare cu propriile legături și secrete, iar în unele momente mi-a fost destul de greu să țin pasul cu toate relațiile dintre ele. Din această cauză, mi-a fost dificil să mă conectez cu personajele și să mă implic emoțional în poveste.
Totuși, trebuie să recunosc că misterul din jurul morții Columbiei Jones este bine construit. Autoarea lasă indicii pe parcurs, strecoară suficiente piste false și reușește să păstreze suspansul până aproape de final. Am încercat să ghicesc cine se află în spatele crimei, dar nu am reușit deloc să intuiesc adevăratul vinovat, iar acest lucru a făcut ca ultimele capitole să fie cele mai captivante din întreaga carte. Finalul recompensează cititorii atenți la detalii și leagă firele poveștii într-un mod satisfăcător.
Din păcate, experiența mea de lectură a fost afectată și de ediția în limba română. Traducerea mi s-a părut destul de greoaie pe alocuri, formulările nu au curs întotdeauna natural, iar redactarea ar fi avut nevoie de mai multă atenție. Am observat foarte multe virgule folosite nepotrivit, ceea ce mi-a întrerupt ritmul lecturii și m-a făcut să mă opresc de mai multe ori decât mi-aș fi dorit.
Per total, „A Very Bad Thing” este un thriller cu o idee bună și un mister construit inteligent, care ascunde surprize până în ultimele pagini. Cu toate acestea, ritmul lent din prima parte, multitudinea de personaje și problemele de traducere au făcut ca lectura să nu mă impresioneze atât de mult pe cât speram. Este o carte care are câteva momente foarte reușite, în special spre final, însă pentru mine a fost o experiență bună, dar nu memorabilă, motiv pentru care îi ofer 3 din 5 stele.

“A Very Bad Thing” was my second encounter with J.T. Ellison, and after finishing it, I can say that I found many of the same elements that stayed with me after reading my first novel by the author. Her writing style feels very familiar: she takes her time building the atmosphere, places a strong emphasis on secrets and the characters’ pasts, and tells the story through multiple points of view. If you enjoy psychological and domestic thrillers, I’m sure you’ll find plenty here to keep you intrigued.
The story revolves around Columbia Jones, a famous author who is at the peak of her career. Her books are bestsellers, and a film adaptation of her work is about to be released. Everything seems perfect until the final night of her book tour, when the presence of someone in the audience deeply unsettles her. The next morning, Columbia is found dead in a pool of blood, and the news shocks both her family and loved ones, as well as the readers who admired her.
After her death, the focus shifts to Darian, Columbia’s daughter and publicist, who struggles to cope with both her loss and the chaos surrounding the case. At the same time, the investigation begins to uncover more and more details about Columbia’s past, and the flawless image she carefully created slowly starts to fall apart. A determined detective searching for the truth and a journalist who refuses to stop digging until every secret is exposed add even more layers to an increasingly complex investigation. As new information comes to light, the list of suspects continues to grow, and nearly every character seems to be hiding something.
Although I found the premise very intriguing, I felt that the first half of the novel moved rather slowly. For a long time, it seemed like the story kept circling around the same information without making any significant progress. The pacing is deliberately slow, and the truly suspenseful moments don’t arrive until much later, which made the reading experience more challenging than I had expected.
Another aspect I struggled with was the large cast of characters. There are many names to keep track of, each with their own relationships and secrets, and at times I found it difficult to follow all the connections between them. As a result, I never felt particularly attached to the characters or emotionally invested in their stories.
That said, I have to admit that the mystery surrounding Columbia Jones’s death is very well crafted. The author carefully plants clues throughout the novel, scatters plenty of convincing red herrings, and manages to maintain the suspense until almost the very end. I tried to figure out who was behind the murder, but I completely failed to predict the real culprit, and that made the final chapters the most gripping part of the book. The ending rewards attentive readers and ties the story’s many threads together in a satisfying way.
Unfortunately, my reading experience was also affected by the Romanian edition. I found the translation rather clunky in places, some of the phrasing didn’t always feel natural, and the editing could have been more polished. I also noticed a significant number of misplaced commas, which repeatedly interrupted the flow of my reading and pulled me out of the story more often than I would have liked.
Overall, „A Very Bad Thing” is a thriller with a strong premise and an intelligently constructed mystery that keeps its surprises hidden until the final pages. However, the slow pacing in the first half, the large number of characters, and the issues with the Romanian translation prevented it from leaving as strong an impression on me as I had hoped. It certainly has some excellent moments—especially toward the end—but for me, it was a good, rather than memorable, reading experience. Because of that, I’m giving it 3 out of 5 stars.
