„Bărbatul anului” de Iliana Xander este un thriller psihologic care m-a atras încă de la primele pagini prin ideea de la care pornește povestea. Totul începe în momentul în care Natalie își vede cea mai bună prietenă plecând dintr-un club alături de un bărbat atrăgător, aparent perfect. A doua zi însă, prietena ei este găsită inconștientă într-o stație de autobuz și intră în comă, fără ca nimeni să știe ce s-a întâmplat în acea noapte. Când Natalie îl recunoaște mai târziu pe acel bărbat pe coperta unei reviste, unde este prezentat drept „Bărbatul Anului”, își dă seama că aparențele ascund mult mai mult decât lasă să se vadă și hotărăște să afle adevărul.
Pentru a descoperi ce s-a întâmplat cu prietena ei, Natalie se angajează ca menajeră în conacul The Splendors, locuința impresionantă a lui Rosenberg. Ceea ce părea la început doar o casă luxoasă se dovedește a fi un loc plin de mistere. Dincolo de camerele elegante și obiectele valoroase, există camere de supraveghere, încăperi care ascund secrete și o atmosferă apăsătoare, care îi dă senzația că este urmărită la fiecare pas. Situația devine și mai neliniștitoare atunci când află că femeia care a ocupat înainte același loc de muncă a dispărut fără urmă. Din acel moment, Natalie înțelege că investigația ei este mult mai periculoasă decât și-a imaginat și că fiecare pas făcut o poate apropia atât de adevăr, cât și de propriul sfârșit.
Mi-a plăcut faptul că personajele au fost construite cu grijă și au rămas misterioase pe tot parcursul poveștii. Aproape fiecare dintre ele avea ceva suspect în comportament, ascundea informații sau părea că joacă un dublu rol. Tocmai acest lucru m-a făcut să îmi schimb constant părerile despre ele și să nu am încredere în nimeni. De fiecare dată când credeam că am descoperit cine spune adevărul și cine minte, apărea un nou detaliu care îmi răsturna complet teoriile. Mi s-a părut unul dintre punctele forte ale romanului, pentru că misterul a fost păstrat foarte bine până aproape de final.
Ritmul acțiunii este destul de alert, chiar dacă există și câteva momente mai liniștite în care accentul cade mai mult pe investigație și pe construirea atmosferei. Totuși, aceste pasaje nu mi s-au părut plictisitoare, deoarece adăugau indicii importante și mă făceau să citesc în continuare. Am vrut permanent să aflu cine este adevăratul vinovat și dacă bănuielile mele sunt corecte. Autoarea știe când să ofere informații și când să păstreze tăcerea, iar acest echilibru face ca suspansul să rămână prezent până la ultimele pagini.
Mi-a plăcut și modul în care a fost scrisă cartea. Stilul este ușor de urmărit, iar capitolele sunt construite astfel încât să te facă să mai citești încă unul. De asemenea, am apreciat faptul că identitatea personajului negativ a fost ascunsă foarte bine. Deși am încercat de mai multe ori să îmi dau seama cine se află în spatele tuturor evenimentelor, autoarea a reușit să împrăștie suficiente piste false încât să mă țină în suspans aproape până la final.
Per total, „Bărbatul anului” este un thriller captivant, cu personaje interesante, multe secrete și o atmosferă tensionată. Chiar dacă ritmul nu este constant în fiecare capitol, povestea reușește să mențină interesul prin mister, răsturnările de situație și dorința de a descoperi adevărul. A fost o lectură care mi-a plăcut și pe care o recomand celor care apreciază thrillerele psihologice în care nimeni nu este exact ceea ce pare, iar aparențele pot ascunde cele mai întunecate adevăruri.

“Man of the Year” by Iliana Xander is a psychological thriller that hooked me from the very first pages thanks to its intriguing premise. The story begins when Natalie sees her best friend leaving a nightclub with a handsome, seemingly perfect man. The next day, however, her friend is found unconscious at a bus stop and falls into a coma, with no one knowing what happened that night. When Natalie later recognizes the same man on the cover of a magazine, where he has been named “Man of the Year,” she realizes that appearances hide far more than they reveal and decides to uncover the truth.
Determined to find out what happened to her friend, Natalie takes a job as a housekeeper at The Splendors, Rosenberg’s magnificent mansion. What initially seems like nothing more than a luxurious home soon turns out to be a place filled with secrets. Beyond the elegant rooms and priceless possessions lie surveillance cameras, hidden spaces, and an unsettling atmosphere that makes Natalie feel as though she is being watched every step of the way. Things become even more disturbing when she learns that the woman who previously held the same job vanished without a trace. From that moment on, Natalie realizes that her investigation is far more dangerous than she ever imagined and that every step she takes could bring her closer to both the truth and her own downfall.
One of the things I enjoyed most was how carefully the characters were developed while remaining mysterious throughout the story. Nearly every one of them behaved suspiciously, kept secrets, or seemed to be playing a double game. That constantly made me question my assumptions and trust no one. Every time I thought I had figured out who was telling the truth and who was lying, a new revelation completely overturned my theories. I found this to be one of the novel’s greatest strengths, as the mystery is maintained exceptionally well until almost the very end.
The pacing is fairly fast, although there are a few quieter moments that focus more on the investigation and the gradual build-up of the atmosphere. Even so, I never found these sections boring because they introduced important clues and kept me eager to continue reading. I constantly wanted to discover who the real culprit was and whether my suspicions were correct. The author knows exactly when to reveal information and when to hold back, creating a perfect balance that keeps the suspense alive until the final pages.
I also really liked the writing style. It is smooth and easy to follow, and the chapters are structured in a way that always makes you want to read just one more. I especially appreciated how well the identity of the villain was concealed. Although I tried several times to figure out who was behind everything, the author scattered enough convincing red herrings to keep me guessing almost until the very end.
Overall, “Man of the Year” is a gripping thriller with compelling characters, plenty of secrets, and a tense, suspenseful atmosphere. Even though the pacing isn’t equally intense in every chapter, the story successfully maintains the reader’s interest through its mystery, unexpected twists, and the constant desire to uncover the truth. It was an enjoyable read that I would recommend to anyone who loves psychological thrillers where no one is exactly who they seem, and appearances can conceal the darkest truths.
