Death at Daffodil Inn – R.L. Killmore (Cinnamon Falls, #2)

„Death at Daffodil Inn” by R.L. Killmore had been on my mood-reading list for quite some time, so I’m really happy that I finally got around to reading it. I already had an idea of the author’s style after reading the first book in the series, so I knew more or less what to expect. I found the same pleasant atmosphere, intriguing characters, and a story that combines romance with a mystery interesting enough to make me want to find out what had happened. It was the kind of book I genuinely enjoyed reading, especially because of the way it draws you into the life of a small community where everyone seems to know a little something about everyone else, and important events quickly become the talk of the town.

The story takes us to Cinnamon Falls, a picturesque little town where spring seems to have arrived just to highlight its charm. It’s time for the Daffodil Jubilee, the annual festival that brings locals and visitors together for a few days filled with activities, music, and fun. At the heart of the festivities is Daffodil Inn, the inn owned by Morgan Taylor’s parents. Morgan helps them organize and host the festival, but instead of fully enjoying all the excitement around her, she would much rather have a little time to herself. She has plenty on her mind, and one of those things is Will, a single father who has caught her attention more than she would like to admit.

I liked Morgan because she isn’t a perfect character, nor does she try to be. She has her own desires, insecurities, and moments when she would simply like to put everything else aside and focus on what makes her happy. At the same time, the fact that she helps her parents shows how involved she is in her family’s life and how much she cares about what they have built together. Daffodil Inn isn’t just the setting for a large part of the story; it’s also a family business whose future matters to Morgan. That’s why things become much more complicated when the festival, which should have been an opportunity to celebrate and promote the inn, ends up being associated with a murder.

As for Will, I have to admit that I liked the idea of having a single father as one of the male leads. Beyond the attraction Morgan feels toward him, this aspect of his life makes him more interesting and adds another layer of depth to their dynamic. Will isn’t just the attractive man who gives Morgan butterflies; he’s also someone with responsibilities and a life of his own. That’s precisely why I found the relationship between them to be such an important part of the story. I enjoyed watching their interactions, seeing how they gradually grow closer, and following the way they learn to work together, even though the circumstances surrounding all of this are far from romantic.

Things take an unexpected turn during the dance at the end of the Daffodil Jubilee. Morgan finally comes face-to-face with Will, and for a moment, it seems as though they might get a little time to themselves. However, the festive atmosphere is suddenly interrupted by a scream. A guest is found dead in the garden maze, and the news quickly spreads among the attendees. What should have been a happy occasion turns into a full-blown scandal, and Daffodil Inn risks suffering the consequences of being associated with this tragedy.

I liked the way the author combines the mystery with the romance. The murder isn’t simply thrown into the story to make things more exciting; it becomes the reason Morgan and Will end up working together. They try to figure out what really happened, uncover what lies beneath the surface, and discover who might have had a motive to commit such a crime. In a town where everyone knows everyone else, rumors spread quickly, and every conversation has the potential to reveal an important detail. At the same time, the close-knit nature of the community makes things more complicated because people have relationships, shared histories, and secrets they might not be ready to reveal.

I particularly enjoyed this aspect of the story because it isn’t built solely around the question of who the killer is, but also around how such an incident affects the entire community. When you live in a small town where local businesses matter and people rely on one another, a scandal of this magnitude can have serious consequences. For Morgan, the stakes are even higher because she isn’t just trying to uncover the truth; she’s also trying to protect her parents’ business. I thought this was a fitting motivation for her character, and I appreciated that the story gave her a personal reason to get involved in the investigation.

Another thing I enjoyed was the way the characters are developed, especially their interactions with one another. Their relationships aren’t there simply to move the plot forward; they also contribute to the overall atmosphere of the book. Every exchange adds something, whether it’s the growing connection between Morgan and Will, the relationships within the community, or the way people react when a problem arises that no one can ignore. I enjoyed discovering this web of connections between the characters, which includes both funny, lighthearted moments and the suspicions and tensions that fit so well with the mystery at the heart of the story.

I also have to talk about Cinnamon Falls because it’s one of the reasons I enjoyed this book so much. I love stories set in small towns where the locals are always running into one another, know each other’s families, keep up with each other’s lives, and step in to help whenever someone needs it. There’s something incredibly comforting about this kind of atmosphere, even when the story involves a murder. I liked the idea of a community where local businesses play an important role, people get involved in town events, and festivals become opportunities to spend time together. Of course, in a place like this, keeping a secret for very long is practically impossible, but that’s exactly what makes these kinds of stories so much fun.

Honestly, Cinnamon Falls is one of those fictional places where I would love to live or, if that’s not an option, at least spend a vacation. I can easily imagine spending a few days there, wandering through its streets, stopping by the local shops, and taking part in the festivals organized by the community. Naturally, I’d prefer to enjoy the town without finding myself in the middle of a murder investigation! Jokes aside, I think this is one of the book’s greatest strengths: it creates a setting where you want to spend more time and where the characters seem to have lives of their own beyond the pages you’re reading.

If I had to make a comparison, I’d say the story has a bit of that „Gilmore Girls” charm, with its small-town atmosphere, characters who are constantly crossing paths, and the feeling that every resident has their own place in the life of the town. At the same time, the murder mystery adds something that reminded me of „Pretty Little Liars”, with secrets gradually coming to light and suspicions falling on several characters. The combination of romance, likable characters, and a welcoming setting also reminded me of the charm of the „Dream Harbor” series. If you enjoy stories that bring all these elements together, I think there’s a good chance you’ll have a great time with this book.

Of course, I wouldn’t say everything was perfect or that the mystery kept me guessing at every turn. Having already become familiar with the author’s style after reading the first book, I had a fairly good idea of how the story would unfold. Some things felt predictable, and for me, the book’s appeal came mainly from the atmosphere, the character dynamics, and the balance between the romantic and mystery elements. I didn’t need every plot point to be completely unexpected because, first and foremost, I picked up this book for the pleasure of returning to a fictional world where I feel comfortable. Still, I would have liked certain parts of the investigation to keep me in suspense a little longer.

Overall, „Death at Daffodil Inn” was a very enjoyable read that gave me exactly the combination I was looking for: a love story with a touch of tension, a mystery that drives the plot forward, and a small town I would love to revisit. I enjoyed following Morgan and Will as they tried to uncover the truth, as well as learning more about the community of Cinnamon Falls. I appreciated the way the author developed the relationships between the characters and maintained the warm atmosphere of a small town without leaving out the suspicions, secrets, and unexpected twists.

I’m giving this book four out of five stars because it offered me a relaxing and engaging reading experience, even if the mystery wasn’t always as unpredictable as I would have liked. I recommend it to anyone who loves small-town romance stories where a romantic storyline intertwines with an investigation and the characters find themselves caught up in all sorts of unexpected situations. If you enjoy „Gilmore Girls”, „Pretty Little Liars”, and the „Dream Harbor” series, I think this book is worth giving a chance. And if you’re looking for a read that will make you grow attached to a fictional town and the people who call it home, Cinnamon Falls might just become one of those places you’ll want to return to, too.
