Zero Days – Ruth Ware

Ruth Ware is one of my favorite thriller authors, so whenever I discover a new title written by her, I always go into it with certain expectations. I have to admit, though, that some of her more recent books have left me disappointed, which made me even more eager to pick up „Zero Days”. I wanted to find a story that would truly draw me in, make me forget about everything happening around me, and remind me why I came to love the author’s writing so much in the first place. At the same time, I was a little worried that I might end up with another book that failed to live up to my expectations. Fortunately, things turned out quite differently, and „Zero Days” proved to be a thriller I genuinely enjoyed, offering exactly the kind of story I had been hoping to find.

This time, Ruth Ware introduces us to Jack Cross, an intelligent, brave woman who is extremely good at what she does. Alongside her husband, Gabe, she works in security testing, hired by various companies to identify weaknesses in their security systems. More specifically, the two of them break into buildings, bypass security measures, and demonstrate just how easily existing safeguards can be compromised. In other words, their job requires them to think like criminals, stay one step ahead of anyone trying to stop them, and find solutions even when things seem impossible. Jack and Gabe make a great team, and their relationship is closely connected to both their professional and personal lives. This is precisely why everything that follows will have such a tremendous impact on Jack, who suddenly finds herself in a situation she could never have anticipated, not even in her worst nightmares.

Everything begins to change when what seems like an ordinary assignment turns into a complete nightmare. When Jack returns home, she discovers that Gabe has been murdered, and the world she has always known falls apart in an instant. On top of the pain of losing her husband, she must deal with another serious problem: the police consider her their prime suspect. Instead of having time to grieve and try to understand what happened, Jack finds herself fighting for her own freedom. From that moment on, everything becomes a race against time, with every decision potentially making the difference between escaping and getting caught. The question that naturally arises is how far a woman is willing to go to prove her innocence and uncover the truth about the death of the person she loved.

I really liked the basic premise of the novel and the way the author builds the entire story around a protagonist who has very little time to adjust to her new reality. Jack is not the kind of character who can sit back and wait for things to work themselves out. She knows time is not on her side and that if she wants to find out who killed Gabe, she will have to take matters into her own hands. At the same time, she must find a way to evade the police, gather information, and piece together all the clues that might lead her to the real killer. I found it interesting to see how she uses her professional skills in a situation so different from anything she has experienced before. What was once simply a dangerous job now becomes her only advantage, and the experience she has gained over the years might be what gives her a chance to survive.

I thought Jack was a well-developed character, especially because of the way she combines vulnerability with determination. She is a woman dealing with a devastating loss, but she cannot afford to let herself be overwhelmed by grief, at least not while she has such an urgent problem to solve. That does not mean we cannot feel her pain or that she easily moves on from her husband’s death. On the contrary, the bond between them makes the entire situation even more heartbreaking. Jack must come to terms with the fact that the man she built her life with is gone while trying to understand who might have wanted him dead and why. On top of that, being pursued by the authorities forces her to look at things from a different perspective and be careful about every person she encounters. She can no longer trust people easily, and this uncertainty adds another layer of tension to the story.

Gabe is not an insignificant character either, even though his role in the story is primarily connected to the events that set everything in motion. His relationship with Jack is an essential part of the novel because her desire to uncover the truth is not simply about proving her innocence. She wants to understand what happened to the man she thought she knew so well and whether there were things about his life she never had the chance to discover. As the story progresses, it becomes increasingly clear that Gabe’s death is not just a case that needs to be solved but also a loss that forces Jack to reconsider how much she can trust the people around her. I liked that this personal aspect of the story does not get completely overshadowed by the chases and Jack’s attempts to stay ahead of the police. Even when she has to focus on her next move, her past and her relationship with her husband remain important to understanding the choices she makes.

Another aspect of „Zero Days” that really appealed to me was the pacing. This is not the kind of thriller where you have to be patient until the story finally gets interesting, because Jack’s situation becomes complicated fairly quickly. From the moment she finds her husband dead, she is caught up in a series of events that leave her very few opportunities to stop and catch her breath. She constantly has to think about her next move, avoid getting caught, and find answers before all her options disappear. I liked how fast-paced the story was without completely losing sight of the characters and their motivations. Every stage of the chase brings new challenges, and the situations Jack finds herself in made me want to keep reading to see what would happen next. I was genuinely invested in the story because I wanted to find out how she would get herself out of this mess and whether she would manage to identify the person responsible for Gabe’s death.

Of course, the mystery also plays an important role, and Ruth Ware knows how to leave enough questions unanswered to keep readers interested in what is happening. Who killed Gabe? Why has Jack become the prime suspect? Are there things the protagonist still does not know that could completely change the way she sees the events surrounding his death? These questions made me pay close attention to the clues and try to figure out where the story was heading. I liked that everything was not revealed too quickly and that I had enough time to wonder what was really behind certain events. At the same time, I never felt that the mystery was being dragged out unnecessarily just to fill the pages. The story maintains a fairly good balance between action, suspenseful moments, and the information that gradually helps us understand what is really going on.

I also found it interesting that the novel revolves around a profession that might seem unusual to many of us but fits Jack’s circumstances remarkably well. Under normal circumstances, she and Gabe are the ones testing the limits of security systems and figuring out how to bypass them. Now, however, Jack must use all that knowledge to navigate a world in which she is the one being hunted. She goes from being someone who knows her field inside out to a woman forced to rely on her instincts, improvise, and make difficult decisions under enormous pressure. I thought this was one of the book’s strongest ideas because it gives the story a distinctive dynamic and sets it apart from other thrillers centered on a murder and an investigation. It also made me think about how quickly everything can change when you no longer know who your friends are and who might want to hurt you.

When it comes to the author’s writing, I found several of the things I have come to love about her books: an interesting premise, characters placed in difficult situations, and a mystery that makes you want to keep turning the pages. I would not necessarily say that „Zero Days” is the most complex story I have read by Ruth Ware, but I do think it has enough strengths to stand out. I liked the way she developed the protagonist’s predicament and the fact that danger comes from more than one direction. Jack must evade the police, uncover the truth, and understand what happened to her husband, all while trying to stay one step ahead of those looking for her. I thought the combination of an investigative thriller and the story of a woman on the run who refuses to give up worked really well, at least for me.

All things considered, I am really glad I decided to read „Zero Days” and that I had such an enjoyable experience with it. After being disappointed by a few of the author’s more recent books, I needed a story that would draw me in from the beginning and make me eager to discover the ending as soon as possible. This book did exactly that. The premise captivated me, the characters were well developed enough to keep me invested, the action moved at a fast pace, and the mystery remained engaging throughout the entire reading experience. I was curious to see how everything would come together and what would happen to Jack, especially as her situation became increasingly complicated. I never felt like I had to force myself to keep reading. I did so because I genuinely wanted to find the answers and see how everything would end.

For me, „Zero Days” is a five-star read, especially because it delivered exactly what I look for in a thriller: a captivating premise, a protagonist I wanted to follow until the very end, plenty of tense moments, and a mystery that kept me invested in the story. I am glad Ruth Ware managed to surprise me in such a positive way and that this novel reminded me she can still write stories that draw me in and make me eager to keep reading. If you are looking for a fast-paced thriller about a woman who must go on the run to protect her freedom, prove her innocence, and discover who is behind a murder, I think this book is worth giving a chance. I finished it feeling that I had made an excellent choice, and I am really happy I finally got around to reading this one.
