Rewitched – Lucy Jane Wood (Selcouth, #1)

I absolutely loved „Rewitched” by Lucy Jane Wood! I started reading it without expecting to get so attached to the characters and their story, but I ended up discovering exactly the kind of book I love, with magic, romance, lovely friendships, and a bookshop where I would have happily spent hours. On top of that, I thought the atmosphere was perfect for this time of year. The book has such a cozy feel to it that it makes you want to curl up on the couch, make yourself a cup of tea or hot chocolate, and read while it’s cold outside. For me, it was one of those books that are perfect for autumn days, when all you want to do is stay warm and enjoy a lovely story.

Our protagonist is Belladonna Blackthorn, known to those closest to her as Belle, a witch who is approaching her 30th birthday. Although she has magical powers, she seems to have lost her connection to her own magic lately and can no longer access her full potential. Instead of focusing on this part of her life, Belle devotes her time and energy to Lunar Books, a bookshop she cares deeply about and is determined to protect at all costs. She is the kind of person who throws herself into everything she does, wants things to work out, and ends up putting other people’s needs before her own. But sometimes, trying to do everything can leave us completely exhausted, and Belle will have the chance to learn this lesson as the story unfolds.

Things get complicated around her birthday when she is summoned before the Selcouth coven and discovers that she must face a series of challenges to prove herself as a witch. If she fails, she risks losing her magic forever. And since problems rarely come one at a time, Belle also has to deal with the obstacles that keep getting in her way while trying to hold on to her job and keep her life under control. She has the entire month of October to prove what she is capable of, and her mission turns out to be much more complicated than she could have imagined. Fortunately, she doesn’t have to face all these challenges alone. She receives help from the important women in her life, an unexpected mentor, and a wizard who is just as attractive as he is capable of driving her absolutely crazy.

I really liked Belle precisely because she isn’t a perfect character. She has her insecurities, feels overwhelmed by her responsibilities, and tries to find solutions to every problem around her, even when she seems to have no energy left to deal with another challenge. I found it easy to connect with her and understand her choices, especially when I saw how much she cared about the things that mattered to her. She is caring, hardworking, and dedicated, but she also needs to learn that she can’t save everyone if she ends up neglecting herself in the process. I enjoyed following her journey and watching her begin to see her life from a different perspective. Beyond all the magical challenges, Belle needs to learn to trust herself more, recognise her own worth, and understand that she doesn’t always have to prove something to deserve appreciation. I think this is one of the book’s loveliest messages and one of the reasons her story is so easy to relate to and fall in love with.

Now, let’s talk about Lunar Books, one of my favourite parts of the novel! If you’ve been following me for a while, you probably already know that I have a soft spot for books featuring bookshops, so it was pretty clear that this story had every chance of winning me over. I love the idea of a place where books are more than just products sitting on shelves, and where people can come not only to buy something to read but also to enjoy the atmosphere and feel welcome. Lunar Books is exactly the kind of bookshop I would love to visit: a welcoming space full of character, where you could spend hours browsing books and discovering new stories.

Belle wants the bookshop to be as pleasant a place as possible for everyone who walks through its doors. She takes an active role in everything related to its organisation and atmosphere, trying to turn it into a warm, comfortable space where customers can feel at home. It’s clear how much Lunar Books means to her and how much of herself she puts into her work. That’s precisely why I enjoyed following all her efforts and found myself hoping that her plans would work out, especially since she doesn’t get much support from her boss.

In fact, he was the character I found hardest to put up with. Quiet and far from enthusiastic about Belle’s ideas, he seems more concerned with cutting costs than with figuring out what could be done to save the bookshop and make it a more appealing place. While she tries to create a pleasant atmosphere and give customers a lovely experience, he disagrees with spending any extra money and seems completely unable to understand her attachment to the place. I have to admit that I wish he had given her more freedom and appreciated all the effort she puts in. Every time he appeared in the story, I found myself taking Belle’s side and wondering how anyone could be so unenthusiastic about a bookshop! But then again, characters like him have their purpose, too, and his presence only highlights how much Lunar Books means to Belle.

I also liked the way Lucy Jane Wood developed the supporting characters. Each of them contributes something to the story, and their interactions kept me interested throughout the book. I grew fond of them and enjoyed the moments when they came together, helped one another, or simply spent time in each other’s company. Their relationships bring a lot of warmth to the story and show just how important it is to have people you can rely on when things don’t go the way you’d hoped. I particularly liked that Belle doesn’t have to deal with all her problems on her own. Even though there are moments when it seems as if she has to figure everything out by herself, the people around her show her that help can come from unexpected places and that there is nothing wrong with leaning on the people you love.

The story also focuses on family bonds, the connections between people, and the ways certain relationships can be repaired or take on a new meaning. I enjoyed this aspect of the novel because it adds more depth to the events and complements Belle’s magical adventure beautifully. It’s not just about the challenges she must overcome to keep her powers, but also about what she discovers about herself and the people in her life. I think these moments make the story more relatable because, beyond the spells and fantastical elements, we find emotions and situations that we can all understand.

I enjoyed the magical side of the story just as much. I found the way magic is woven into the plot interesting, especially how the challenges Belle faces are connected to her personal growth. The fact that she is a witch who can no longer fully access her powers adds an element of mystery and makes her journey even more intriguing. At the same time, I liked the contrast between the magical world and her everyday life, where she has to hide her identity from non-magical people, deal with problems at work, and try to find some balance. All these elements come together nicely, and the witchy atmosphere fits the autumn setting perfectly. I have to admit that stories about witches have a special charm for me, especially when the magic comes with likeable characters, funny moments, and a story that doesn’t take itself too seriously but still manages to convey some important messages.

And the romance brings all these elements together beautifully! The love story between Belle and the wizard assigned to protect her develops gradually, at a pace I really enjoyed. We get a slow burn that makes you pay attention to every interaction between them and notice the little changes in their relationship. He is ridiculously attractive, but he doesn’t always make Belle’s life easy, and the combination of attraction, teasing, and moments when they get to know each other better makes their dynamic really enjoyable. I liked that their relationship doesn’t develop overnight but has time to grow as they spend more time together. I’m the kind of reader who loves a well-developed slow burn, so I followed their growing closeness with interest and was curious to see where their relationship would go. What’s more, the romance doesn’t take over the entire story but blends naturally with the magic, Belle’s challenges, and her relationships with the other characters.

Another thing I appreciated was the message about self-love. Belle tends to get so caught up in the problems of those around her that she ends up forgetting about herself and what she truly wants. As she goes through all these challenges, she begins to understand that she doesn’t always have to be the one who makes sacrifices and that she doesn’t need to prove to anyone that she deserves to be loved or appreciated. I liked this idea, especially because it connects with all the other aspects of the story. Rediscovering her magic also becomes a way for Belle to rediscover herself, and she has to learn to trust her own abilities and give herself the same care and attention she offers everyone else. I think this is one of the reasons I enjoyed the novel so much: it has enough magic and romance to keep you invested in the story, but it also has an emotional side that gives it greater depth.

Overall, „Rewitched” was a book I thoroughly enjoyed, and I would happily recommend it to anyone looking for a cozy story that’s perfect for autumn. I loved the characters, the atmosphere of Lunar Books, the magic, the relationships between the characters, and, of course, the love story that develops gradually. I also appreciated the way the novel explores family, friendship, and self-confidence without losing sight of the fun and adventure. For me, all these elements came together to create a truly enjoyable reading experience, and it reminded me once again just how much I love stories where magic blends with everyday life.
