„Heartless” de Elsie Silver este cea de-a doua carte din seria „Chestnut Springs” și mi-a oferit exact genul de lectură de care aveam nevoie: ușoară, amuzantă, romantică și, pe alocuri, surprinzător de emoționantă. Dacă îți plac poveștile de dragoste cu cowboy, ferme, orașe mici în care toată lumea pare să știe totul despre toată lumea și personaje care ajung să se apropie în ciuda diferențelor dintre ele, atunci cred că această carte merită să fie pe lista ta de lecturi.
De data aceasta facem cunoștință mai îndeaproape cu Cade Eaton, un tată singur care nu este tocmai genul de bărbat ușor de abordat. Este serios, destul de distant și pare să aibă mereu o atitudine de om care nu are timp de pierdut. Viața lui se învârte în jurul fermei și, mai ales, în jurul fiului său, Luke. Tocmai de aceea, atunci când Willa acceptă să devină bona băiețelului pentru vară, lucrurile nu par să aibă cum să se complice prea mult. Ea trebuie doar să aibă grijă de Luke timp de două luni. Doar că, bineînțeles, într-un romance lucrurile nu rămân niciodată atât de simple.
Willa este foarte diferită de Cade. Ea vine dintr-un mediu urban și are o energie mult mai veselă, spontană și deschisă. Mi-a plăcut mult felul în care interacționează cu Luke și faptul că relația dintre cei doi nu pare deloc forțată. Willa reușește să intre treptat în viața lor și să aducă o doză de căldură și veselie într-o casă în care Cade pare să fi ridicat foarte multe ziduri. Iar dacă la început pare că Willa este cea care îl tachinează și încearcă să-l scoată din zona lui de confort, pe parcurs descoperim că și Cade are o latură mult mai blândă decât lasă să se vadă.
Cade este, probabil, unul dintre acele personaje care pot părea destul de greu de descifrat la început. Este mai mare decât Willa, foarte sigur pe el în anumite privințe și are acel aer de cowboy dur și morocănos care face parte din farmecul lui. Totuși, pe măsură ce povestea avansează, ajungem să vedem și omul din spatele acestei aparențe. Descoperim un tată foarte implicat, un bărbat care își iubește enorm copilul și care poartă cu el anumite nesiguranțe și răni mai vechi. Mi-a plăcut că autoarea nu l-a construit doar ca pe tipul dur și atrăgător, ci i-a oferit și vulnerabilitate. În anumite momente, devine clar că această duritate este mai degrabă un mecanism de apărare decât adevărata lui personalitate.
Și Willa mi s-a părut un personaj plăcut tocmai pentru că nu este prezentată într-o singură lumină. Este veselă și are replici care m-au făcut să zâmbesc, dar există și momente în care îi vedem nesiguranțele și latura mai sensibilă. Mi-a plăcut faptul că, pe măsură ce ajungem să-i cunoaștem mai bine, atât Willa, cât și Cade capătă mai multă profunzime. Îi vedem în situații serioase, dar și în momente mai relaxate și amuzante, iar combinația aceasta a făcut ca relația lor să mi se pară mult mai naturală.
Unul dintre lucrurile care mi-au plăcut cel mai mult la carte a fost, bineînțeles, chimia dintre cei doi. Willa și Cade sunt foarte diferiți, iar tocmai contrastul dintre ei face interacțiunile atât de simpatice. La început există o anumită distanță între ei, Cade încercând să păstreze lucrurile strict în limitele relației dintre angajator și bonă, în timp ce Willa nu poate să nu observe cât de atrăgător este. Treptat, însă, tensiunea dintre ei începe să crească și devine tot mai greu pentru amândoi să ignore ceea ce se întâmplă.
Mi-au plăcut în special momentele în care Cade începe să lase garda jos. În spatele bărbatului serios și aparent greu de impresionat se ascunde cineva mult mai atent și mai afectuos decât ai crede inițial. Relația cu Willa îl face să se deschidă și să privească altfel anumite lucruri din viața lui, iar ea, la rândul ei, descoperă că nu totul este atât de simplu pe cât pare la prima vedere. Între tachinări, momente amuzante și scene mai romantice, relația lor evoluează într-un mod care mi-a fost ușor să-l urmăresc.
Mi-a plăcut destul de mult această carte și cred că unul dintre punctele ei forte este faptul că reușește să fie o poveste foarte simpatică și amuzantă, fără să renunțe complet la momentele emoționante. Am avut parte de suficiente scene care să mă facă să zâmbesc, dar și de momente în care personajele își confruntă trecutul, fricile și nesiguranțele. Tocmai acest echilibru a făcut lectura plăcută pentru mine. Nu este o poveste extrem de complicată, dar nici nu se rezumă doar la atracția dintre cei doi.
Un alt aspect pe care l-am apreciat este relația dintre Willa și Luke. Copilul nu este doar un element folosit pentru a-i apropia pe cei doi protagoniști, ci chiar contribuie la dinamica poveștii. Willa ajunge să țină foarte mult la el, iar interacțiunile dintre ei sunt drăguțe și aduc multe momente relaxate. În același timp, relația lui Cade cu fiul său ne ajută să înțelegem mai bine cine este el cu adevărat. Felul în care își iubește copilul și încearcă să fie un tată bun spune foarte multe despre personaj.
Mi-a plăcut și atmosfera de la fermă. Avem exact acel vibe de small town pe care îl caut uneori într-un romance: comunitate restrânsă, cowboy, ferme, personaje care se cunosc între ele și o senzație de familiaritate care face ca totul să pară mai cald. Mi se pare că acest decor se potrivește foarte bine poveștii și contribuie la farmecul ei. Chestnut Springs este genul de loc în care parcă ai vrea să mai rămâi puțin după ce termini cartea, mai ales pentru că știi că mai sunt și alte personaje ale căror povești urmează să le descoperim.
Per total, „Heartless” a fost pentru mine o lectură relaxantă și plăcută. Nu cred că este genul de carte pe care o citești pentru o intrigă foarte complicată, ci mai degrabă pentru personaje, chimia dintre ele, romantismul, umorul și atmosfera de cowboy romance. Mi-a plăcut că am ajuns să-i cunosc pe Cade și Willa în mai multe ipostaze și că, dincolo de atracția dintre ei, am putut să le descoperim și vulnerabilitățile. Tocmai aceste detalii m-au făcut să mă atașez mai mult de poveste.
Dacă ești fană a romance-urilor cu cowboy, a poveștilor de tip small town și a relațiilor care pornesc dintr-o situație aparent simplă, dar ajung să fie mult mai complicate, cred că „Heartless” merită încercată. Mai ales dacă simți că ai nevoie de o lectură ușoară, amuzantă și romantică, care să te rupă puțin de rutina de zi cu zi și să te lase să evadezi pentru câteva ore într-o fermă din Chestnut Springs.
Heartless – Elsie Silver (Chestnut Springs, #2)
“Heartless” by Elsie Silver is the second book in the “Chestnut Springs” series, and it gave me exactly the kind of read I needed: light, funny, romantic, and, at times, surprisingly emotional. If you enjoy love stories involving cowboys, ranches, small towns where everyone seems to know everything about everyone else, and characters who grow closer despite their differences, then I think this book deserves a spot on your reading list.
This time, we get to know Cade Eaton a little better, a single father who isn’t exactly the easiest man to approach. He is serious, fairly distant, and always seems to have that attitude of someone who doesn’t have time to waste. His life revolves around the ranch and, most importantly, his son, Luke. So when Willa agrees to become the little boy’s nanny for the summer, it doesn’t seem like things could get too complicated. She only has to take care of Luke for two months. But, of course, in a romance, things are never quite that simple.
Willa is very different from Cade. She comes from an urban environment and has a much more cheerful, spontaneous, and open personality. I really liked the way she interacts with Luke and the fact that their relationship never feels forced. Willa gradually becomes part of their lives and brings a sense of warmth and happiness into a home where Cade seems to have built a lot of walls around himself. And while, at first, Willa is the one who teases him and tries to push him out of his comfort zone, as the story progresses, we discover that Cade has a much softer side than he initially lets on.
Cade is probably one of those characters who can be quite difficult to figure out at first. He is older than Willa, very confident in certain aspects of his life, and has that tough, grumpy cowboy vibe that is part of his charm. However, as the story progresses, we get to see the man behind that appearance. We discover a very involved father, a man who loves his child deeply and carries certain insecurities and old wounds with him. I liked that the author didn’t build him solely as the tough and attractive guy, but also gave him vulnerability. At certain points, it becomes clear that his toughness is more of a defense mechanism than a reflection of his true personality.
I also liked Willa as a character precisely because she isn’t portrayed in just one way. She is cheerful and has plenty of lines that made me smile, but there are also moments when we get to see her insecurities and her more sensitive side. I liked the fact that, as we get to know them better, both Willa and Cade gain more depth. We see them in serious situations, but also in more relaxed and funny moments, and this combination made their relationship feel much more natural to me.
One of the things I enjoyed most about the book was, of course, the chemistry between the two of them. Willa and Cade are very different, and that contrast is exactly what makes their interactions so entertaining. At first, there is a certain distance between them, with Cade trying to keep things strictly within the boundaries of the employer-nanny relationship, while Willa can’t help but notice how attractive he is. Gradually, though, the tension between them starts to build, and it becomes increasingly difficult for either of them to ignore what is happening.
I especially enjoyed the moments when Cade starts to let his guard down. Behind the serious man who seems difficult to impress is someone much more attentive and affectionate than you might initially expect. His relationship with Willa encourages him to open up and look at certain aspects of his life differently, while she, in turn, discovers that not everything is as simple as it might seem at first glance. Between the teasing, funny moments, and more romantic scenes, their relationship develops in a way that was easy for me to follow and enjoy.
I really liked this book, and I think one of its strengths is that it manages to be a very sweet and funny story without completely giving up on the emotional moments. There were plenty of scenes that made me smile, but also moments when the characters had to confront their pasts, fears, and insecurities. That balance is what made the reading experience so enjoyable for me. It isn’t an extremely complicated story, but it also isn’t limited to the attraction between the two main characters.
Another aspect I appreciated was the relationship between Willa and Luke. The child isn’t simply there as a plot device to bring the two protagonists closer together; he genuinely contributes to the story’s dynamic. Willa grows very attached to him, and their interactions are sweet and bring plenty of lighthearted moments. At the same time, Cade’s relationship with his son helps us understand who he really is. The way he loves his child and tries to be a good father says a lot about his character.
I also really enjoyed the atmosphere of the ranch. It has exactly that small-town vibe I sometimes look for in a romance: a close-knit community, cowboys, ranches, characters who all know one another, and a sense of familiarity that makes everything feel warmer. I think this setting fits the story really well and adds to its charm. Chestnut Springs is the kind of place that makes you want to stay a little longer after finishing the book, especially because you know there are other characters whose stories we still have to discover.
Overall, “Heartless” was a relaxing and enjoyable read for me. I don’t think it’s the kind of book you pick up for a highly complicated plot, but rather for the characters, the chemistry between them, the romance, the humor, and the cowboy romance atmosphere. I liked getting to see Cade and Willa in different situations and being able to discover their vulnerabilities beyond the attraction between them. Those details are what made me become more invested in the story.
If you’re a fan of cowboy romances, small-town stories, and relationships that start from an apparently simple situation but end up becoming much more complicated, I think “Heartless” is worth giving a try. Especially if you’re looking for a light, funny, and romantic read that can take you away from your everyday routine for a little while and let you escape for a few hours to a ranch in Chestnut Springs.
