The River Is Waiting – Wally Lamb

Sometimes, there are books we choose because the story draws us in, and other times, there are books we end up reading almost by chance, only to be completely surprised by them. For me, „The River Is Waiting” was exactly that kind of book. I started reading it because of a Goodreads challenge, and I’m incredibly glad I did, because otherwise, I’m almost certain it would have remained on my TBR for who knows how long. And that would have been a shame, because I discovered a book that deeply moved me and that will undoubtedly stay on my mind for a long time to come.

The story centers around Corby Ledbetter, a man who finds himself at one of the most difficult points in his life. Corby is a painter, but he has ended up working as a graphic designer, and things haven’t gone at all the way he imagined they would. After losing his job, he ends up staying home and taking care of his twins, Niko and Maisie. Instead of becoming a time when the family grows closer, the situation puts even more pressure on a marriage that was already fragile. His relationship with Emily, his wife, deteriorates, and Corby increasingly turns to alcohol and the prescription medication given to him by his doctor.

And then something happens that changes absolutely everything. A moment of carelessness leads to a tragedy that no one should ever have to experience. This is where Corby’s real story truly begins. He ends up in prison and has to learn how to survive in a harsh environment where he is confronted with some of the darkest, but also some of the brightest, aspects of human nature. In prison, he encounters brutality, fear, and loneliness, but also people capable of empathy, friendship, and kindness. I really appreciated the fact that the author doesn’t portray prison in simple black-and-white terms, but instead shows us just how complicated relationships between people can be.

One of the things I liked most about the book was the way the characters are developed. Corby is far from being a perfect character, and that is exactly what made him feel so real to me. He is a man who makes mistakes, makes bad decisions, tries to run away from his own problems, and, at certain points, simply doesn’t know how to deal with his pain. But he is also a man who tries to change. I loved following this process and watching him gradually begin to see himself differently and to better understand who he is and what he has done.

What particularly impressed me was the way Corby begins to build important relationships with the people around him while he is in prison. His relationship with the prison librarian is one of the ones that stayed with me, but so did the connections he develops with other inmates. Among them is a teenager who desperately needs someone to listen to him, guide him, and show him that there can be another path. I found it incredibly touching that Corby, despite being in such a difficult situation himself, eventually becomes for others the kind of person he might have needed at certain points in his own life.

Art and reading gradually become very important to him. Corby begins to look more closely at his own life, his choices, and the person he has become. Painting is no longer simply a passion or something connected to his past; it becomes a way for him to express things he cannot put into words. The mural he creates becomes, in a way, a confession. It is his way of putting all his questions, regrets, memories, and hopes onto the walls. And I felt that, through art, Corby was trying not only to understand himself, but also to find a way to move forward.

His entire journey kept me completely immersed in the story. I read with great interest, but also with a lot of pain, because I wanted to see where Corby would end up and, above all, whether he would ever be able to come to terms with what had happened. I found his story incredibly moving. There were moments when I felt as though I was suffering alongside him and his family, and the tragedy they go through stayed with me for a long time. It was difficult for me to let go of the story even after I closed the book.

I think one of the most powerful things about this book is its realism. Wally Lamb manages to create such believable characters and convey their emotions so effectively that, at one point, I felt as though I wasn’t reading a novel at all, but the true story of a real person. It felt as though I were seeing Corby’s life from the inside, with all his mistakes, fears, regrets, and attempts to get back on his feet. I never felt like I was reading about a distant fictional character, but rather about a person who could truly exist.

I also really appreciated the fact that the author doesn’t turn the story into one solely about guilt and punishment, but rather into a story about change, responsibility, and the possibility of becoming a better person. Corby has to confront what he has done and the consequences of his choices, while at the same time trying to understand how he ended up at that point in his life. I loved following his entire journey and seeing how hard he fights to become a better person, both for his family and for himself.

And, of course, there is the question that followed me throughout the entire book: can Corby be forgiven? Can a person change enough to deserve a second chance? And how much does regret matter when the consequences of a mistake can no longer be undone? I don’t think this book offers any simple answers, and that is exactly what I appreciated about it. It made me think deeply about guilt, forgiveness, family, and the way people try to keep living after their lives are changed in a single moment.

I found it to be a beautifully written book, but at the same time, it is accessible and deeply human. I felt so many things while reading it: sadness, anger, compassion, hope, and sometimes even a little peace. Corby’s story broke my heart into a thousand pieces, and it took me some time to recover from it. There are books you finish and immediately move on to the next one, and then there are books that stay with you. For me, „The River Is Waiting” belongs to the second category.

I’m incredibly glad that the Goodreads challenge led me to this book. Without it, I probably would have put it off for a long time, and perhaps I would never have discovered just how deeply Corby’s story could affect me. Now that I’ve finished it, I’m very curious to discover Wally Lamb’s other books as well. If he manages to create characters as vivid and stories that make me feel so intensely in his other novels, then I will definitely be reading more of his work.

„The River Is Waiting” was much more than a simple story about a man who ends up in prison. It was a story about loss, family, mistakes, regret, healing, and trying to find meaning when you feel as though you have lost everything. It was painful, but beautiful. Difficult, but profoundly human. And, most of all, it was one of those books that continues to run through your mind long after you have turned the final page.
