Mă bucur foarte mult că „Secrete îngropate” de Lynda La Plante a fost aleasă la clubul de lectură dedicat thrillerelor. Era una dintre cărțile care își aștepta de mult rândul pe lista mea de lecturi și, cel mai probabil, ar mai fi rămas acolo o perioadă dacă nu exista acest impuls. Uneori chiar ai nevoie de un mic motiv în plus ca să începi o carte pe care o tot amâni, iar în cazul acesta mă bucur că am făcut-o.
Acesta este primul volum din seria „Jack Warr” și face o introducere foarte bună în universul personajului principal. Povestea începe în momentul în care, în ruinele unei case distruse de un incendiu, este descoperit un cadavru carbonizat, alături de urmele unor milioane de bancnote furate, reduse aproape complet la cenușă. Ancheta pare, la început, doar un nou caz pentru Poliția Metropolitană, însă lucrurile devin din ce în ce mai complicate pe măsură ce ies la iveală legături cu infracțiuni mai vechi și cu o lume dominată de corupție, bani murdari și oameni dispuși să facă orice pentru a-și proteja secretele. În același timp, investigația îl obligă pe Jack să își privească propriul trecut și să caute răspunsuri despre identitatea lui și despre tatăl biologic, iar cele două fire narative ajung să se împletească într-un mod foarte interesant.
Trebuie să recunosc că începutul nu mi s-a părut deloc ușor. Apar foarte multe personaje încă din primele capitole, fiecare cu propriul rol în poveste și cu legături care nu sunt evidente de la început. Mi-a luat ceva timp până am reușit să le rețin pe toate și să înțeleg cine este cine și cum se leagă fiecare de anchetă. Din cauza acestui lucru, ritmul lecturii mi s-a părut destul de lent la început și am avut impresia că avansez mai greu decât mi-aș fi dorit. Totuși, după ce toate piesele au început să se așeze, povestea a devenit mult mai captivantă și am simțit că merită răbdarea investită.
Pentru mine, sufletul acestei cărți este, fără îndoială, Jack Warr. El este personajul care dă identitate întregii povești și motivul principal pentru care vreau să continui seria. Mi s-a părut un protagonist foarte bine construit, cu multe nuanțe și defecte care îl fac credibil. La început îl vedem ca pe un polițist talentat, dar lipsit de motivație, care pare că nu și-a găsit încă locul și care nu se implică prea mult în ceea ce face. În același timp, îl descoperim și dincolo de uniformă. Vedem relația frumoasă pe care o are cu femeia pe care o iubește, apropierea sinceră față de părinții adoptivi și recunoștința pe care o simte pentru familia care l-a crescut. Toate aceste aspecte îl transformă într-un personaj foarte uman și ușor de înțeles.
Cel mai mult mi-a plăcut însă evoluția lui pe parcursul romanului. În momentul în care își dă seama că oamenii implicați în anchetă au legături cu tatăl său biologic, totul capătă o miză personală. Din acel moment nu mai este doar un polițist care își face datoria, ci un om care încearcă să afle adevărul despre propria viață. Devine mai atent, mai implicat și mult mai hotărât să ducă investigația până la capăt. Mi-a plăcut și faptul că începe să își dorească promovarea la gradul de sergent, nu doar pentru satisfacția profesională, ci și pentru că își dorește un viitor mai bun și un salariu care să îi ofere mai multă stabilitate. Sunt detalii care îl fac să pară un om obișnuit, cu griji și obiective reale, nu doar un detectiv perfect.
Un alt lucru care mi-a plăcut este felul în care autoarea explorează conflictul dintre ceea ce este corect din punct de vedere legal și ceea ce pare corect din punct de vedere moral. Jack ajunge în situații în care trebuie să aleagă între respectarea regulilor și ceea ce simte că ar trebui să facă, iar această luptă interioară îl face și mai interesant. Nu este un personaj care vede lumea doar în alb și negru, iar tocmai această complexitate îl diferențiază de mulți alți polițiști întâlniți în thrillere.
Finalul mi s-a părut unul dintre cele mai reușite momente ale cărții. Nu oferă toate răspunsurile și lasă suficiente întrebări deschise încât să îți dorești imediat să începi următorul volum. Jack rămâne într-un punct în care viitorul lui este incert, iar dilema dintre lege și propriile convingeri morale pare să devină și mai importantă. Mi-a plăcut foarte mult această încheiere pentru că stârnește curiozitatea fără să pară forțată.
Per total, „Secrete îngropate” a fost o lectură care mi-a plăcut și pe care mă bucur că am descoperit-o. Personajul principal a fost, pentru mine, adevărata forță a romanului și motivul pentru care am rămas implicată în poveste chiar și atunci când ritmul era mai lent. Singurul lucru care a tras puțin în jos experiența a fost numărul foarte mare de personaje introduse încă de la început, ceea ce a făcut ca primele capitole să fie ceva mai greu de urmărit. Dacă partea aceasta ar fi fost puțin mai simplă sau mai bine dozată, sunt convinsă că aș fi acordat fără ezitare cinci stele. Așa, rămâne o lectură de 4 stele, pe care o recomand iubitorilor de thrillere polițiste și pe care cu siguranță o voi continua odată cu următoarele volume din seria „Jack Warr”.
Buried – Lynda La Plante (DC Jack Warr, #1)
I’m really glad that „Buried” by Lynda La Plante was chosen for the thriller book club. It had been sitting on my TBR for a long time, and it probably would have stayed there for quite a while if it hadn’t been for this extra push. Sometimes you just need a little motivation to finally pick up a book you’ve been putting off, and I’m really glad I did in this case.
This is the first book in the „DC Jack Warr” series, and it does an excellent job of introducing both the main character and his world. The story begins when a charred body is discovered in the ruins of a house destroyed by fire, alongside the remains of millions of pounds in stolen banknotes that have been almost entirely reduced to ashes. At first, the investigation seems like just another case for the Metropolitan Police, but it soon becomes increasingly complex as connections emerge to older crimes and a world ruled by corruption, dirty money, and people willing to do anything to protect their secrets. At the same time, the investigation forces Jack to confront his own past and search for answers about his identity and his biological father, and these two storylines eventually intertwine in a very compelling way.
I have to admit that I didn’t find the beginning easy at all. A large number of characters are introduced within the first few chapters, each with their own role in the story and connections that aren’t immediately obvious. It took me some time to remember who everyone was and understand how each character fit into the investigation. Because of this, the pacing felt rather slow at first, and I found myself progressing through the book more slowly than I would have liked. However, once all the pieces started falling into place, the story became much more engaging, and I felt the payoff was well worth the patience.
For me, the heart of this book is undoubtedly Jack Warr. He is the character who gives the story its identity and the main reason I want to continue with the series. I found him to be a very well-developed protagonist, full of depth and flaws that make him feel authentic. At first, we see him as a talented but unmotivated police officer who seems to have lost his sense of purpose and doesn’t fully commit himself to his work. At the same time, we get to know the man behind the badge. We see the loving relationship he has with the woman he loves, the genuine bond he shares with his adoptive parents, and the gratitude he feels toward the family that raised him. All of these aspects make him a deeply human and relatable character.
What I appreciated most, though, was his development throughout the novel. The moment he realizes that the people involved in the investigation are connected to his biological father, everything suddenly becomes personal. From that point on, he is no longer just a police officer doing his job but a man searching for the truth about his own life. He becomes more observant, more invested, and far more determined to see the investigation through to the end. I also liked that he begins to pursue a promotion to sergeant, not only for professional satisfaction but because he wants a better future and a salary that will provide greater stability. These details make him feel like an ordinary person with real concerns and genuine ambitions, rather than a flawless detective.
Another aspect I really enjoyed was the way the author explores the conflict between what is legally right and what feels morally right. Jack finds himself in situations where he has to choose between following the rules and doing what he believes is the right thing, and this internal struggle makes him an even more compelling character. He isn’t someone who sees the world in black and white, and it’s precisely this complexity that sets him apart from many other detectives in crime thrillers.
I found the ending to be one of the strongest parts of the novel. It doesn’t provide all the answers, leaving enough questions unresolved to make you want to pick up the next book immediately. Jack is left at a point where his future remains uncertain, and the conflict between the law and his own moral convictions seems destined to become even more significant. I really liked this ending because it creates genuine anticipation without feeling forced.
Overall, „Buried” was a book I genuinely enjoyed, and I’m very glad I finally discovered it. For me, the main character was the novel’s greatest strength and the reason I stayed invested in the story even when the pacing slowed down. The only aspect that slightly affected my enjoyment was the sheer number of characters introduced right from the beginning, which made the opening chapters somewhat difficult to follow. Had that part been a little more streamlined or better paced, I’m convinced I would have given it a full five stars. As it stands, it’s a solid four-star read that I would definitely recommend to fans of police procedurals and crime thrillers, and I’ll certainly be continuing with the rest of the „DC Jack Warr” series.
