Am fost foarte curioasă să citesc „Metal Slinger: Trezirea magiei” de Rachel Schneider încă din momentul în care am început să văd tot mai multe păreri despre această carte. Era aproape imposibil să nu observ valul de reacții pe care l-a stârnit în comunitatea de cititori, mai ales pe BookTok, unde părerile erau împărțite, iar celebrul plot twist din final era menționat peste tot, fără prea multe detalii. Tocmai de aceea am pornit lectura cu așteptări destul de mari și, spre bucuria mea, cartea nu doar că s-a ridicat la nivelul lor, ci chiar m-a surprins într-un mod foarte plăcut.
Povestea o are în centrul atenției pe Brynn, o tânără cu părul de culoarea cuprului care face parte din Alaha, un popor exilat și condamnat să își trăiască existența pe mare. Încă din copilărie s-a pregătit să devină gardian, iar cea mai mare dorință a ei este să participe la Târgul anual organizat de Kenta, locul unde, pentru prima dată, are șansa să pășească pe uscat. Însă ceea ce trebuia să fie un moment important din viața ei se transformă rapid într-un lanț de evenimente care amenință pacea dintre cele două popoare. Acolo îl întâlnește pe Acker, un soldat din Kenta, iar întâlnirea lor schimbă complet direcția poveștii. Relația dintre cei doi pornește sub semnul neîncrederii și al conflictului, dar evoluează treptat într-un mod foarte natural, pe măsură ce fiecare începe să pună la îndoială tot ceea ce credea că știe despre lume, despre ceilalți și chiar despre propria identitate.
Unul dintre lucrurile care mi-au plăcut cel mai mult a fost felul în care Rachel Schneider și-a construit personajele. Aproape fiecare pare să ascundă ceva, iar senzația că nu poți avea încredere pe deplin în nimeni este prezentă pe tot parcursul lecturii. Brynn este o protagonistă curajoasă, încăpățânată și dispusă să lupte pentru ceea ce consideră că este corect, însă, în același timp, face greșeli și ia decizii impulsive care o fac să pară foarte umană. Acker este genul de personaj care te intrigă încă de la prima apariție. Calm, rezervat și greu de citit, lasă mereu impresia că știe mai multe decât spune, iar misterul care îl înconjoară m-a făcut să îmi doresc să aflu tot mai multe despre el. Mi-a plăcut și dinamica dintre ei, tensiunea specifică trope-ului enemies-to-lovers fiind construită treptat, fără să pară forțată.
La fel de mult m-a cucerit și universul creat de autoare. Mi s-a părut o lume fantastică bine gândită, cu reguli proprii, conflicte politice, popoare diferite și o magie care se dezvăluie puțin câte puțin. Mi-a plăcut că nu primim toate explicațiile de la început, ci descoperim acest univers odată cu Brynn. Aventurile pe mare, pericolele întâlnite pe drum și toate detaliile despre cultura Alaha au făcut ca lumea să pară vie și autentică. Este genul de fantasy în care simți că există încă multe lucruri de explorat și care te face să îți dorești să petreci cât mai mult timp alături de personaje.
Ritmul poveștii este foarte bine echilibrat. Acțiunea este prezentă aproape în permanență, dar există și suficiente momente în care personajele evoluează, relațiile dintre ele se dezvoltă, iar cititorul are timp să proceseze toate informațiile noi. Stilul de scriere al autoarei este fluid și foarte ușor de urmărit, motiv pentru care paginile au trecut incredibil de repede. Este una dintre acele cărți care te fac să îți spui că vei mai citi doar un capitol și, fără să îți dai seama, ai ajuns câteva zeci de pagini mai departe.
Și apoi vine finalul… Nu pot să vorbesc despre această carte fără să menționez întorsătura de situație din ultimele capitole. Înțeleg perfect de ce a provocat atât de multe reacții și de ce a împărțit cititorii în două tabere. Eu, sincer, nu m-am așteptat absolut deloc la acest plot twist. Autoarea a construit totul cu foarte mare atenție, iar personajele și-au jucat rolurile atât de convingător, încât am acceptat fără să pun prea multe întrebări imaginea pe care mi-o oferea povestea. Tocmai de aceea, în momentul în care adevărul a ieșit la iveală, am rămas complet surprinsă. Privind retrospectiv, îți dai seama că existau indicii presărate pe parcurs, însă sunt atât de bine ascunse încât este foarte ușor să le treci cu vederea. Este unul dintre acele plot twist-uri care te obligă să privești întreaga poveste dintr-o perspectivă complet diferită și care îți rămân în minte mult timp după ce ai terminat cartea.
În final, pot spune că „Metal Slinger: Trezirea magiei” a fost una dintre cele mai plăcute surprize ale mele din categoria romantasy. Are o lume fascinantă, personaje complexe, mistere bine construite, aventuri captivante pe mare, magie, tensiune și o poveste de dragoste care se dezvoltă frumos pe parcurs. Este ușor de înțeles de ce acest prim volum al dilogiei „Foc și Metal” a atras atât de multă atenție și a fost tradus în numeroase țări. Eu am închis cartea cu foarte multe întrebări și cu o nevoie aproape imediată de a continua seria. Sunt extrem de încântată că i-am dat o șansă și abia aștept apariția celui de-al doilea volum, pentru că simt că ce am descoperit până acum este doar începutul unei povești mult mai mari.

I had been very curious to read „Metal Slinger” by Rachel Schneider ever since I started seeing more and more reviews of it. It was almost impossible to miss the wave of reactions it sparked within the reading community, especially on BookTok, where opinions were divided and the famous ending plot twist was being mentioned everywhere—without revealing too many details. Because of that, I went into the book with fairly high expectations, and I’m happy to say that it not only lived up to them but actually surprised me in the best possible way.
The story follows Brynn, a young woman with copper-colored hair who belongs to the Alaha, an exiled people condemned to spend their lives at sea. Ever since she was a child, she has trained to become a guardian, and her greatest dream is to attend Kenta’s annual Market, where, for the first time in her life, she has the chance to set foot on land. However, what should have been one of the most important moments of her life quickly turns into a chain of events that threatens the fragile peace between the two nations. There she meets Acker, a soldier from Kenta, and their encounter completely changes the course of the story. Their relationship begins with distrust and conflict but gradually develops in a very natural way as each of them starts questioning everything they thought they knew about the world, about each other, and even about their own identities.
One of the things I loved most was the way Rachel Schneider crafted her characters. Almost everyone seems to be hiding something, and throughout the story there’s a constant feeling that no one can be fully trusted. Brynn is a brave, stubborn protagonist who is willing to fight for what she believes is right, yet she also makes mistakes and acts impulsively, which makes her feel incredibly human. Acker is the kind of character who intrigues you from the very first moment he appears. Calm, reserved, and difficult to read, he always gives the impression that he knows far more than he lets on, and the mystery surrounding him made me eager to learn more about him. I also really enjoyed the dynamic between the two of them. The enemies-to-lovers tension is developed gradually and never feels forced.
I was equally captivated by the world Rachel Schneider created. It felt like a carefully crafted fantasy setting with its own rules, political conflicts, distinct cultures, and a magic system that unfolds little by little. I especially appreciated that we aren’t given all the answers from the beginning but instead discover this world alongside Brynn. The adventures at sea, the dangers they face along the way, and the details about Alaha culture made the setting feel vivid and authentic. It’s the kind of fantasy world that feels much larger than what we see on the page and leaves you wanting to spend even more time exploring it with the characters.
The pacing is exceptionally well balanced. There is almost always something happening, but the story also takes enough time to let the characters grow, relationships evolve, and the reader absorb all the new information. Rachel Schneider’s writing style is smooth and incredibly easy to follow, making the pages fly by. This is one of those books where you tell yourself you’ll read just one more chapter, only to realize you’ve read several more before you even notice.
And then there’s the ending… I can’t talk about this book without mentioning the twist in the final chapters. I completely understand why it generated so many reactions and why it split readers into two camps. Personally, I never saw it coming. The author carefully builds every piece of the story, and the characters play their roles so convincingly that I accepted the version of events presented to me without questioning it too much. That’s exactly why, when the truth was finally revealed, I was completely shocked. Looking back, you realize that the clues were there all along, but they’re so cleverly hidden that it’s incredibly easy to overlook them. It’s one of those plot twists that forces you to rethink the entire story from a completely different perspective and stays with you long after you’ve finished the book.
Overall, I can honestly say that „Metal Slinger” was one of my biggest romantasy surprises. It offers a fascinating world, complex characters, well-crafted mysteries, thrilling adventures at sea, magic, plenty of tension, and a romance that develops beautifully over the course of the story. It’s easy to see why this first installment in the „Fire & Metal” duology has attracted so much attention and has already been translated into numerous languages. I closed the book with countless questions and an almost immediate need to continue the series. I’m so glad I gave it a chance, and I can’t wait for the second book because it truly feels like everything I’ve discovered so far is only the beginning of a much bigger story.
