După ce am încheiat „Quicksilver”, eram nerăbdătoare să continui seria „Fae & Alchemy”. Primul volum m-a cucerit complet prin lumea spectaculoasă creată de Callie Hart, prin ritmul alert al acțiunii și, mai ales, prin relația dintre Saeris Fane și Kingfisher. A fost una dintre acele cărți pe care le-am citit cu sufletul la gură și care m-au făcut să aștept cu mult entuziasm continuarea. Tocmai de aceea am început „Brimstone” cu așteptări foarte mari, convinsă că voi regăsi aceeași magie care m-a făcut să iubesc primul volum.
Povestea începe într-un moment în care viața lui Saeris s-a schimbat complet. Deși nu și-a dorit niciodată puterea, ea trebuie acum să accepte rolul de regină a Curții Sângelui și toate responsabilitățile care vin odată cu această poziție. Povara pe care o poartă este una uriașă, iar fiecare decizie poate influența soarta celor din jur. În același timp, transformările prin care a trecut au făcut-o mai puternică, dar și mai vulnerabilă, iar întoarcerea în locurile pe care le numește acasă nu mai este atât de simplă pe cât și-ar dori.
În paralel, Kingfisher pornește într-o misiune extrem de periculoasă alături de Carrion Swift, un personaj care aduce multe momente amuzante prin replicile și personalitatea lui. Cei doi trebuie să traverseze Orașul de Argint, unde îi așteaptă pericole, conspirații și secrete care amenință nu doar misiunea lor, ci și întreaga lume. Pe măsură ce întunericul începe să se răspândească peste Yvelia, mizele devin tot mai mari, iar Saeris și Fisher sunt nevoiți să lupte din nou pentru cei pe care îi iubesc.
Unul dintre lucrurile care mi-au plăcut cel mai mult a fost faptul că am avut ocazia să mă reîntâlnesc cu Saeris, Kingfisher și multe dintre personajele pe care am ajuns să le îndrăgesc în primul volum. Mi-a făcut mare plăcere să văd ce s-a întâmplat cu ele după evenimentele din „Quicksilver”, cum încearcă fiecare să facă față noilor provocări și cât de mult s-a schimbat lumea în care trăiesc. Mi-a plăcut și faptul că universul creat de Callie Hart continuă să se extindă, iar cititorul descoperă noi locuri, noi personaje și informații care completează povestea.
La fel ca în primul volum, autoarea construiește o lume fantasy foarte bogată, plină de magie, conflicte politice, alianțe fragile și creaturi fascinante. Se vede că universul este bine gândit, iar detaliile contribuie la atmosfera epică a poveștii. Există multe revelații interesante și câteva răsturnări de situație care reușesc să surprindă, iar finalul pregătește terenul pentru continuarea seriei.
Cu toate acestea, deși mi-a plăcut lectura, am simțit că acest volum nu a reușit să mă cucerească la fel de mult ca „Quicksilver”. Mi-a fost destul de greu să ignor faptul că i-a lipsit ceva din farmecul primului volum. Nu pot spune exact ce anume, dar am avut permanent impresia că intensitatea emoțională nu mai este aceeași. Dacă în prima carte simțeam tensiunea aproape la fiecare capitol, aici ritmul mi s-a părut mai inegal, iar acțiunea nu a mai avut aceeași senzație de urgență care mă făcea să întorc pagină după pagină fără oprire.
Am avut și impresia că relația dintre Saeris și Kingfisher nu mai transmite aceeași energie care m-a făcut să mă atașez atât de mult de ei la începutul seriei. Chimia dintre ei există în continuare, însă nu am mai simțit-o la fel de puternic. Au fost momente în care mi s-au părut mai distanți unul față de celălalt, iar interacțiunile lor nu au mai avut aceeași naturalețe și aceeași intensitate emoțională. Tocmai pentru că în primul volum relația lor a fost unul dintre punctele mele preferate, diferența s-a simțit destul de mult.
De asemenea, am simțit că povestea acordă mai mult timp dezvoltării contextului politic și pregătirii conflictelor viitoare decât relațiilor dintre personaje. Înțeleg de ce autoarea a ales această direcție și cred că multe dintre aceste elemente vor avea un rol important în volumul următor, însă pe parcursul lecturii am avut senzația că ritmul încetinește în anumite momente. Cartea are peste 600 de pagini și, deși se citesc ușor datorită stilului accesibil al autoarei, au existat câteva secvențe care mi s-au părut puțin prea lungi.
Chiar și așa, „Brimstone” rămâne o continuare solidă. Callie Hart scrie într-un stil foarte captivant, iar lumea pe care a construit-o este suficient de interesantă încât să mă facă să vreau să aflu ce urmează. Personajele sunt în continuare ușor de îndrăgit, iar finalul ridică suficiente semne de întrebare încât să îți dorești imediat următorul volum.
Per total, pentru mine „Brimstone” a fost o lectură de 4 stele. Mi-a plăcut să mă întorc în universul „Fae & Alchemy”, să îi revăd pe Saeris și Kingfisher și să descopăr noile provocări prin care trec. Chiar dacă nu am mai simțit aceeași chimie dintre personaje și nici același nivel de suspans care m-au făcut să iubesc „Quicksilver”, seria continuă să mă captiveze și sunt foarte curioasă să văd în ce direcție va merge povestea în volumul următor. Sunt convinsă că aceasta este doar o etapă de tranziție înaintea unor evenimente și mai spectaculoase, iar eu cu siguranță voi continua aventura alături de aceste personaje.
Brimstone – Callie Hart (Fae & Alchemy, #2)
After finishing „Quicksilver”, I couldn’t wait to continue the „Fae & Alchemy” series. The first book completely won me over with the incredible world Callie Hart created, the fast-paced plot, and, above all, the relationship between Saeris Fane and Kingfisher. It was one of those books that kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end and left me eagerly counting down the days until the sequel. That’s why I started „Brimstone” with very high expectations, convinced I would experience the same magic that made me fall in love with the first installment.
The story begins at a time when Saeris’ life has changed completely. Although she never wanted power, she must now accept her role as Queen of the Blood Court and all the responsibilities that come with it. The burden she carries is enormous, and every decision she makes has the potential to shape the fate of those around her. At the same time, everything she has been through has made her stronger, but also more vulnerable, and returning to the places she once called home is no longer as simple as she wishes it could be.
Meanwhile, Kingfisher embarks on an extremely dangerous mission alongside Carrion Swift, a character who brings plenty of humor to the story with his witty remarks and entertaining personality. Together, they must travel through the Silver City, where danger, conspiracies, and long-buried secrets threaten not only their mission but the entire world. As darkness begins to spread across Yvelia, the stakes grow higher, forcing Saeris and Fisher to once again fight for the people they love.
One of the things I enjoyed most was getting the chance to reunite with Saeris, Kingfisher, and many of the characters I had grown attached to in the first book. I loved seeing what had happened to them after the events of „Quicksilver”, how each of them was trying to adapt to new challenges, and how much the world around them had changed. I also appreciated that Callie Hart continued expanding her fantasy universe, introducing new locations, new characters, and fresh pieces of lore that made the story feel even richer.
Just like in the first novel, the author creates a fascinating fantasy world filled with magic, political conflicts, fragile alliances, and captivating creatures. It’s clear that this universe has been carefully planned, and the level of detail adds to the epic atmosphere of the story. There are several intriguing revelations and a few unexpected twists that genuinely caught me by surprise, while the ending does an excellent job of setting the stage for the next installment.
Even so, while I definitely enjoyed reading „Brimstone”, I couldn’t help feeling that it didn’t captivate me quite as much as „Quicksilver”. It was difficult to ignore the feeling that something was missing compared to the first book. I can’t quite put my finger on what it was, but throughout the novel I felt that the emotional intensity wasn’t as strong. In the first installment, I felt the tension in almost every chapter, whereas here the pacing felt more uneven, and the story lacked that same constant sense of urgency that had me turning page after page without wanting to stop.
I also felt that the relationship between Saeris and Kingfisher didn’t have quite the same spark that made me become so invested in them at the beginning of the series. Their chemistry is still there, but I didn’t experience it with the same intensity. There were moments when they felt more distant from one another, and their interactions lacked some of the natural flow and emotional depth that had made them such a highlight of the first book. Since their relationship was one of my favorite aspects of „Quicksilver”, this difference was quite noticeable.
Another thing I noticed was that the story spends more time developing the political landscape and laying the groundwork for future conflicts than focusing on the relationships between the characters. I understand why the author chose this direction, and I believe many of these elements will become important in the next book. However, while reading, I occasionally felt that the pacing slowed down. At over 600 pages, the novel is still an easy read thanks to Callie Hart’s accessible writing style, but there were a few sections that felt slightly longer than necessary.
Even so, „Brimstone” remains a solid sequel. Callie Hart has a wonderfully engaging writing style, and the world she has created is more than compelling enough to keep me invested in the series. The characters remain easy to care about, and the ending raises enough questions to make you want to pick up the next book immediately.
Overall, „Brimstone” was a four-star read for me. I truly enjoyed returning to the world of „Fae & Alchemy”, seeing Saeris and Kingfisher again, and discovering the new challenges they have to face. Even though I didn’t feel the same level of chemistry between the characters or the same gripping suspense that made me love „Quicksilver”, the series continues to captivate me, and I’m very excited to see where the story goes next. I’m convinced this book serves as a transitional installment before even bigger and more spectacular events unfold, and I will definitely be continuing this journey alongside these characters.
