A Court of Frost and Starlight – Sarah J. Maas (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #4)
I really enjoyed this installment in the „ACOTAR” series, especially because it gave me the chance to return to Velaris and spend a little more time with the characters I have grown so attached to. „A Court of Frost and Starlight” by Sarah J. Maas is different from the previous books, as it is quieter and less focused on action, but I actually think that was exactly what the story needed after everything that happened during the war with Hybern. After so many tense moments, losses, and painful experiences, I think the characters deserved a little time to breathe, enjoy the simple things in life, and try to sort through their thoughts.
The story takes us back to Velaris, a city I fell in love with from the very first pages of the series, as the Winter Solstice approaches. The streets are covered in snow, people are getting ready for the celebrations, and the atmosphere feels warm despite the cold outside. Feyre returns to her chosen family, alongside Rhysand and the other members of the Night Court, trying to enjoy this special time of year. I really liked the way Sarah J. Maas describes Velaris during this season because I felt as though I was walking through its streets myself, admiring the lights, decorations, and all the excitement surrounding the holiday preparations.
One of the things I enjoyed most was seeing the characters in a more relaxed setting, getting a glimpse of what their everyday lives look like. After the war with Hybern, all the losses, and all the moments when they had to fight for the people they love, it was lovely to see them gathering together, joking around, making plans, and simply enjoying each other’s company. Of course, not everything is perfect, and the book shows us that returning to normal life doesn’t happen overnight. Even though the immediate danger has passed, each of them still carries the scars of everything they have been through.
I enjoyed Feyre in this book as well, especially because I got to see her beyond her role as a warrior and all the responsibilities she has carried so far. She is a woman who has been through so much, and now she is trying to enjoy what she has gained without forgetting the price she had to pay. I liked seeing her focus on the little things, the people around her, and her desire to build something beautiful for the future. Her relationship with Rhysand is still lovely, and their moments together gave me that sense of closeness and security I had been hoping for after all the chaos in the previous books.
Rhysand remains one of my favorite characters, and in this story, I enjoyed discovering a more personal side of him. Beyond the image of a powerful High Lord who has to make difficult decisions and protect his court, we also get to see his sensitive, thoughtful, and sometimes playful side. His relationship with Feyre is one of the things that brought me the most joy because their bond is built not only on love but also on friendship, trust, and the feeling that they can always rely on each other. I loved the moments when we simply get to see them being together, without every encounter needing to involve danger or some major revelation.
I also enjoyed spending more time with Cassian, Azriel, Mor, Amren, and Nesta, as each of them brings something different to the story. Cassian still strikes me as a character full of energy, with a sense of humor that helps lighten the mood, but also with a sensitivity he doesn’t always show openly. Azriel remains reserved and difficult to read, but that is exactly what makes him so interesting, and the moments when we learn a little more about him definitely sparked my curiosity. Mor brings warmth and a zest for life that the group needs, even though her own story holds things that are far from easy to deal with. As for Amren, I enjoyed seeing her strong personality again, along with the sharp remarks that reflect her character so perfectly.
Nesta was one of the characters who caught my attention the most. She is still caught between anger, pain, and her own memories, and the way she distances herself from everyone shows just how difficult it is for her to come to terms with everything that has happened. She isn’t an easy character to understand or love at every moment, but I think her flaws are exactly what make her feel more real. I liked that the author doesn’t rush her healing or offer simple answers to complicated problems. Her story leaves plenty of questions unanswered and made me want to find out what happens next, especially when it comes to her relationship with Cassian.
Another aspect I really appreciated was the fact that the story is told from the perspectives of several main characters. I thought this was a great choice because it allowed me to understand their thoughts, fears, and desires better, rather than getting to know them only through what they do or say in front of others. Each of them has their own way of seeing things, their own wounds, and their own reasons for reacting the way they do. I enjoyed discovering these differences and getting a better understanding of the group’s dynamics, especially since what we see on the outside doesn’t always reflect what is going on inside a character.
Even though this is a shorter and quieter installment, I didn’t find it any less important to the series. Beyond the festive atmosphere, the gifts, and the funny moments, there is also sadness, loneliness, guilt, and the struggle to move forward after traumatic experiences. I liked the way the author balances these emotions and reminds us that sometimes the hardest battles are the ones we fight within ourselves. At the same time, the book offers a few hints about what might come next, and certain moments definitely made me curious about the characters’ futures.
I read this book with so much affection, and I think it came at exactly the right point in the series. It gave me a much-needed break from wars, confrontations, and life-threatening situations without losing its connection to the events that have made the story so intense up to this point. I loved seeing Feyre, Rhysand, and the others trying to find their balance again, grow closer to one another, and discover that there are still reasons to be happy, even after the hardest times. For me, the charm of this installment lies precisely in these seemingly simple moments, which take on a whole new meaning when you know everything the characters have been through.
Overall, I’m giving it five stars, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who has fallen in love with the „ACOTAR” series and wants to spend a little more time in the world created by Sarah J. Maas. I think this is a book best approached with the right expectations: we don’t get the same level of intense action as in the previous books, but rather a story about connection, family, love, and the process of healing after loss. For me, it was a truly lovely reunion with characters I care about, and the winter atmosphere, their moments together, and the different perspectives made this a reading experience I genuinely enjoyed.
