„Monstrul.

Monstress 1. Awakening – Marjorie Liu (Monstress, #1)
„Monstress. Awakening”, the first volume in the graphic novel series written by Marjorie Liu and illustrated by Sana Takeda, was a read I enjoyed quite a bit, especially because of the way it combines a dark story with stunning illustrations and a world full of mysteries. It is not the kind of graphic novel you read solely for the action, but one that gradually draws you into a complicated universe where magic, war, suffering, and the desire for revenge intertwine in interesting ways. I liked the direction the story takes, even though some things remain unclear in this first volume and certain moments can be a little difficult to follow.
The story takes place in an alternate world where humans and the Arcanics, a race endowed with magical powers, have been involved in a bloody war. Although the conflict has ended, its consequences are still very much present, and the hatred between the two sides has not disappeared. In this world, humans are not necessarily the good guys, and those considered monsters are not always so different from them. Cruelty, exploitation, and the thirst for power are everywhere, and the characters are forced to survive in an environment where trust can be a luxury. I found it interesting that the story does not try to present everything in black and white, instead leaving room for questions about guilt, revenge, and the true nature of those involved.
The main character is Maika Halfwolf, a young Arcanic who survived the war and carries far more within her than meets the eye. Maika is a difficult, stubborn, and often cold character who does not easily show her feelings. It is clear that her past has deeply affected her and that her pain has turned her into someone who prefers to rely on her own strength. She is not a perfect heroine who always makes the right decisions and treats everyone with kindness. On the contrary, she can be impulsive, harsh, and even frightening when pushed to her limits. This is precisely what I liked about her, because her reactions make her feel like someone who has genuinely been affected by what she has experienced, rather than a protagonist created simply to be admired.
One of Maika’s main motivations is her desire to uncover the truth about her mother’s death and avenge her. This quest lies at the heart of the story and leads her into dangerous situations where the past and present begin to connect in unexpected ways. Maika is not just looking for answers; she is also trying to understand who her mother really was and what connection exists between her own identity and the events that changed her life. I found this aspect fascinating because, beneath her desire for revenge, there is a pain she does not always know how to deal with. As she moves forward, it becomes increasingly clear that the truth she is searching for may be far more complicated and dangerous than she ever imagined.
What makes the story even more interesting is the monster lurking inside Maika. It is not simply an element added to introduce moments of horror, but one of the volume’s most important mysteries. Its existence raises many questions about Maika’s powers, her past, and how much control she has over herself. I liked the idea that the greatest threat does not always come from the outside. Maika has to face enemies, uncover secrets, and survive in a hostile world, but at the same time, she must learn to live with something terrifying that exists within her. This inner struggle adds greater depth to her character and makes me curious to see how she will develop in the following volumes.
Throughout the story, Maika also encounters other characters who help bring this universe to life. Some stand by her, while others pose threats or make her search for the truth even more complicated. The relationships between the characters are not always easy to understand, and their intentions are not always obvious. I liked that not every interaction is based on trust or friendship, but is instead shaped by personal interests, past experiences, and the differences between humans and Arcanics. A character may seem helpful at one moment and become difficult to read the next, adding to the overall sense of uncertainty. The cats that appear throughout the story also bring something special to this universe, and I particularly appreciated their presence.
I have to admit that one of this graphic novel’s greatest strengths is its artwork. Sana Takeda’s illustrations are gorgeous, and I think they fit the atmosphere of the story perfectly. There is an interesting combination of horror, steampunk elements, and Art Deco influences, resulting in a universe that looks different from what we encounter in many other comics. The architecture, costumes, creatures, and background details all contribute to the feeling that every page has something unique to offer. I especially appreciated the contrast between the beauty of the artwork and the harsh scenes it depicts. Even when the action becomes violent or disturbing, the illustrations maintain a certain visual elegance that makes the reading experience all the more interesting.
At the same time, I have to say that this is not an easy story to read. There are violent scenes, brutal moments, and situations in which the characters go through experiences that are difficult to endure. War, exploitation, and the way the powerful treat the vulnerable are recurring themes, and some sequences can be quite disturbing. I did not feel that the violence was there simply for shock value, but rather that it was an integral part of the world the author is trying to build. Still, some moments felt particularly harsh, and the amount of information about this universe can sometimes make the story feel overwhelming. There is a lot to discover, many characters to remember, and mysteries that are only beginning to unfold, so not everything is equally clear from the start.
Another thing I appreciated is the way the story explores the idea of monsters, both literally and symbolically. In this world, the line between humanity and monstrosity is not always clear, and some of the most frightening things are connected to the choices the characters make. Cruelty, hatred, and the desire for revenge can turn people into beings who are difficult to recognize, while those considered different are left fighting for survival and the right to exist. I think this is one of the aspects that gives the story greater weight beyond its magic and battles. Maika finds herself at the center of these questions, and her struggle with the monster inside her could become just as important as her fight against the enemies she encounters.
As the first volume in a series, „Monstress. Awakening” feels like a very strong start. The story is engaging, the main character has enough depth to hold my interest, and the universe created by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda has plenty of potential that I am curious to explore further. I would have liked some explanations to be clearer and certain aspects of the world to be developed a little more, but I understand that this is only the beginning of a much larger story. I am left with plenty of questions about Maika’s past, the power she carries within her, and the role she will play in the events to come. These unanswered questions are precisely what make me want to continue the series and see where the story goes and what other challenges await the protagonist.
Overall, „Monstress 1. Awakening” was a read I appreciated for its dark storyline, flawed characters, and artwork that immediately caught my attention. I think it is a successful blend of horror and fantasy, complemented by Art Deco and steampunk influences that give it a distinctive visual identity. Maika Halfwolf’s story is engaging and intense, and the hardships she faces make her struggle all the more compelling. Although I found some aspects complicated and feel that many things still need further explanation, I had an enjoyable reading experience. I cannot wait to read the next volumes and discover how Maika will develop, what other secrets will come to light, and what adventures she will have to face.
