A Court of Wings and Ruin – Sarah J. Maas (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #3)

I absolutely loved this book, and now that I’ve reached the end, I can honestly say without giving it too much thought that the „A Court of Thorns and Roses” series has become one of my all-time favorites, both in fantasy and romantasy. And that’s saying something, considering I’m only on the third book! I’m enjoying Sarah J. Maas’s world more and more, the way she builds her stories, and especially how her characters continue to grow and change from one book to the next. I started this series out of curiosity, wanting to see what all the fuss was about, but now I feel genuinely attached to the characters and want to discover more about the world they live in. This book gave me exactly what I look for in a good fantasy novel: action, emotion, interesting characters, secrets, plot twists, and a love story that continues to win me over.

In this installment, we find Feyre back in the Spring Court, but things are far from what they seem. After everything that happened in the previous book, she doesn’t return as the vulnerable girl who didn’t know whom to trust, but as someone who has discovered her own strength and knows exactly what she needs to do. This time, she has to play a role, hide her true intentions, and make everyone around her believe that things are exactly as they imagine them to be. I really enjoyed this part of the story because Feyre constantly has to be careful about what she says and how she behaves. Every conversation could hide a danger, every gesture could raise suspicion, and a single mistake could jeopardize everything she is trying to accomplish. It’s fascinating to see her in this position, especially when you think about how much she has changed since the beginning of the series.

One of the things I enjoyed most was continuing to follow Feyre’s character development. To me, she is the kind of character who becomes more interesting as the story progresses. She isn’t perfect, and she doesn’t always have all the answers, but that’s exactly what makes her feel more real. She has been through experiences that have changed her profoundly, has had to make difficult decisions, and has learned that sometimes she needs to find the strength to keep going on her own. In this book, I loved seeing how determined she is to fight for the people she loves and how far she is willing to go to protect them. At the same time, I liked that she doesn’t lose sight of who she is and no longer accepts being treated like someone who simply needs to be protected by others. Feyre embraces an important role in what lies ahead, and I felt that every experience she has gone through so far has helped shape the person she is today.

And, of course, I have to talk about Feyre and Rhysand because their relationship is, honestly, an absolute dream for me. I love how they are written together and how their love is built on more than just attraction or romantic moments. There is also trust, respect, and mutual support. Rhys doesn’t try to take away Feyre’s right to choose, nor does he ask her to become someone else to deserve his love. Instead, he encourages her to discover her strength, make her own decisions, and stand beside him as an equal. Feyre, in turn, sees beyond the image others have of him and understands that behind his sometimes sarcastic attitude and seemingly unshakable exterior is someone who carries a great deal on his shoulders. I love that they can rely on each other even when things get complicated and that neither of them has to give up who they are to be together. For me, their relationship is one of the most beautiful aspects of the series and one of the reasons I’m so eager to keep reading.

Another thing I’m really enjoying as I make my way through the series is that I’m finally starting to understand all those „ACOTAR” videos and posts I’ve been seeing over the years. Before reading the books, I would come across characters, quotes, and scenes I knew almost nothing about, but now that I’ve made it this far, so many of them take on a completely different meaning. I understand why certain characters are so beloved, why some relationships have become so popular, and how Sarah J. Maas’s world has managed to bring so many readers together. It’s such a lovely feeling to discover all these things for yourself and finally understand why a series has remained such a big part of fan discussions for so many years. And honestly, if I’ve enjoyed the first three books this much, I’m really curious to see what else is waiting for me.

When it comes to the plot, this book certainly doesn’t lack tension. War is approaching, and Prythian finds itself in a situation where every decision could have serious consequences. Feyre and those around her must find a way to unite courts that have long been divided by rivalries, distrust, and old conflicts. Convincing people who have considered each other enemies for generations to fight for the same cause is no easy task, especially when everyone has their own interests and fears. I liked that the story doesn’t focus solely on battles and direct confrontations, but also on everything that happens before the characters finally come face-to-face with the real danger. The negotiations, conversations, promises, and attempts to earn other people’s trust are just as important as the fighting itself. At times, I felt that a single wrong decision could destroy everything the characters had worked so hard to build, and that uncertainty made me even more invested in the story.

And when it comes to schemes, alliances, and plot twists, Sarah J. Maas really knows how to keep her readers hooked. There were moments when I thought I had figured out where the story was heading, only for the next event to completely change the situation. Some characters end up playing roles I never would have expected, certain pieces of information take on a different meaning once you learn more about them, and alliances aren’t always as secure as they initially seem. I especially enjoyed the moments when I had to reconsider a situation or look at a character from a different perspective. Not every twist can be anticipated, and some of them caught me completely off guard. That’s exactly why I felt I had to pay attention to the details and to how each event connected to what had happened before. I love it when a story manages to surprise me without making me feel as though things are happening purely for shock value, and this book gave me plenty of moments that made me want to read just one more chapter.

Besides Feyre and Rhysand, I also really liked how important the supporting characters are to the story. The family Feyre has found in the Night Court isn’t made up of perfect characters who always get along or always make the right decisions. Each of them has their own problems, fears, and ways of dealing with what they go through. That’s exactly what makes their dynamic so interesting to me. I love that, beyond the teasing and their attempts to appear unshakable, there is a strong bond between them and a genuine desire to protect one another. These characters matter for more than just helping Feyre. They have their own stories, conflicts, and reasons for choosing to fight. The fact that each of them contributes to the events in their own way makes the world of the series feel much more alive and complex.

Another aspect that impressed me was the characters’ devotion to one another. As the story progresses, it becomes increasingly clear that their fight isn’t just about power, territory, or the desire to defeat an enemy. It’s about the people they want to protect, the promises they’ve made, and the things they aren’t willing to give up. I loved seeing how much they are prepared to risk for one another and how, even when a situation seems hopeless, they keep looking for a solution. Of course, there are moments when their decisions are difficult to understand or the sacrifices they are willing to make seem almost impossible, but I think those are precisely the moments that give the story so much weight. This isn’t just about powerful characters fighting dangerous enemies. It’s about characters who have something to lose and understand exactly what it means to fight for someone they love. The way Sarah J. Maas combines these emotions with the action and the stakes of the war was one of the things that kept me most invested in the book.

I also enjoyed the pacing, even though there is a lot to keep track of and quite a few characters who make their presence felt. As the tension builds, you start to realize that the war is no longer just a distant threat but something that is inevitably drawing closer and will change everyone’s lives. There are quieter moments when the characters get the chance to show their vulnerability, but there are also scenes where everything happens so quickly that you barely have time to process what just happened before another problem appears. I think this balance works really well because the emotional moments make the dangers feel more significant, while the action scenes add even more weight to the relationships between the characters. I also liked how the author manages to keep both the conflict between the courts and the personal bonds motivating everyone involved at the heart of the story. This isn’t just a story about a war that needs to be won, but also about what drives people to fight when losing everything becomes a real possibility.

Overall, „A Court of Wings and Ruin” was a five-star read for me. I loved the story, enjoyed following Feyre again and seeing how far she has come, and her relationship with Rhysand continues to be one of my favorite things about the entire series. I appreciated the schemes, alliances, unexpected twists, and the characters’ devotion to one another, which still manages to impress me after everything I’ve read so far. At the same time, I’m glad I finally started this series and get to discover for myself all the moments I’ve seen people discussing so much over the past few years. I know I still have more books to read, but if the first three are anything to go by, I’m convinced this series will remain one of my favorites for a long time. Sarah J. Maas has created a world where magic, love, friendship, sacrifice, and the fight for what matters most come together in a way that makes me want to return to these characters again and again. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy with plenty of action, well-developed characters, relationships that evolve naturally, and enough plot twists to keep you guessing until the very end.
