The Psychiatrist – Emma Curtis
Two families, one secret, and a lie whose consequences cannot be erased. These are the main ingredients of „The Psychiatrist”, a psychological thriller by Emma Curtis that I enjoyed quite a lot and that managed to hold my interest from beginning to end. Although it wasn’t a perfect read and there were a few aspects that kept me from giving it the highest rating, the story gradually drew me in, and the mystery behind the events made me want to keep reading to discover how all the pieces of this puzzle fit together.
The story takes us to an affluent London suburb, where the image you present to others matters enormously, and reputation can sometimes be more important than the truth. In such an environment, people seem to have perfect lives, happy families, and carefully concealed secrets hidden behind closed doors. However, as Emma Curtis demonstrates, appearances can be deceiving, and things that seem straightforward at first may conceal much darker truths. In this story, a single lie ends up connecting the lives of several characters, and its consequences prove to be far more serious than anyone could have imagined.
One of the storylines follows Dr. Geddes, a young psychiatrist at the beginning of her career who is trying to build a professional future at a reputable clinic. Although she seems to have every opportunity to succeed, her past hides a secret she would rather keep from prying eyes. Things become complicated when she finds herself dealing with a difficult, manipulative, and unpredictable patient who seems to know more than he should. Their encounter creates a tense atmosphere and raises numerous questions about how well we can truly know another person and how easily the truth can be used against us. I found it interesting how this part of the story makes us question how much we can trust what we see and hear, and whether people who appear to have control over their own lives are really as in control as they would have us believe.
The second storyline focuses on Lorna Chilcott, a woman who enjoys a close friendship with Elise, a sophisticated woman who seems to lead a carefree life. Their relationship becomes even more intriguing when we learn that Lorna was in love as a teenager with Elise’s husband, a former lead singer of a rock band. This connection from the past adds an interesting dimension to their relationship and makes us wonder whether the friendship between the two women is as sincere and uncomplicated as it appears. Everything takes a dramatic turn, however, when Lorna’s daughter disappears shortly after leaving Elise’s house. From that moment on, the relationship between the two women begins to fall apart, and distrust, suspicion, and accusations gradually replace the closeness they once shared. In such a painful situation, it becomes difficult to distinguish between truth and assumptions, especially when everyone seems to have something to hide.
One thing that caught my attention from the very beginning was the way the author chose to structure the story. During the first part of the book, I felt as though I was reading two completely different stories, with characters, problems, and situations that didn’t seem to have much in common. I admit that, for a while, I couldn’t quite understand where the author was going with the story or what connected the two narrative threads. That’s precisely why I kept reading, eager to discover what linked them and why they were being presented side by side. As I progressed, however, things began to make sense, and the pieces that initially seemed completely unrelated started falling into place. When I finally reached the point where the connections between the characters and events became clearer, I was treated to a spectacular plot twist that completely changed the way I viewed the story up to that point. I loved the feeling of gradually uncovering the truth and realizing that certain details, which may have seemed insignificant at first, actually played a much more important role than I had imagined.
As for the characters, I think Emma Curtis did a good job of developing them in a way that evokes strong reactions from the reader. They aren’t characters who can easily be classified as either good or bad, and that’s precisely what makes them interesting. As I read, I went from feeling sympathy for some of them to criticizing them, judging their choices, and even getting frustrated by the decisions they made. Some of their actions seemed difficult to understand or accept, especially when they had the opportunity to choose a different course of action. At the same time, I believe this is one of the book’s greatest strengths: the characters don’t always react the way we would expect them to, and their choices have consequences that affect not only themselves but also the people around them.
While reading, I often caught myself wondering what I would have done if I had been in one of the characters’ shoes. Would I have made the same decision? Would I have had the courage to tell the truth, even if it meant destroying my own life? Would I have trusted someone who gave me every reason to doubt them? These questions aren’t always easy to answer, especially when you’re looking at things from the outside and feel that the characters are making the wrong choices. However, once you try to put yourself in their position, you begin to understand just how complicated things can become when fear, guilt, pride, and the desire to protect certain people start dictating someone’s behavior. Even though I didn’t agree with all their decisions, I liked that the characters made me react emotionally and think about the motivations behind their actions.
When it comes to pacing, I have to admit that the first half of the book isn’t quite as fast-paced as I would have liked a psychological thriller to be. The story unfolds gradually, and the author devotes quite a bit of time to introducing the characters, exploring their relationships, and establishing situations that will become important later on. Nevertheless, I can’t say that the slower pace diminished my interest in the story. On the contrary, the fact that I couldn’t quite figure out how the two storylines connected made me want to keep reading, hoping to uncover the mystery behind them as soon as possible. I kept asking myself questions, looking for clues, and trying to anticipate what would happen next. And when the story finally began to take shape, I felt that my patience had been rewarded.
I also enjoyed the atmosphere of the book, especially the way the author builds tension through seemingly ordinary relationships. We don’t need spectacular events every few pages to feel that something isn’t quite right. Sometimes, all it takes is a strange conversation, an unexpected reaction, or a detail that doesn’t quite add up to make us question what we thought we knew. In „The Psychiatrist”, distrust gradually seeps into the characters’ relationships, and the feeling that the truth is somewhere just beneath the surface, even though we can’t quite see the whole picture yet, adds to the story’s appeal. I also found the contrast between the elegant, peaceful image of the London suburb and the secrets, tensions, and resentments lurking beneath the surface particularly interesting.
If I had to point out what kept me from considering this book a perfect read, I’d say that the beginning felt a little slow, and the separation between the two storylines made the plot somewhat confusing in the early chapters. I would have liked certain things to move a little faster, especially because I was eager to discover the connection between the characters. However, as I progressed through the book, these minor complaints faded into the background, and the twists and the way the events eventually came together largely made up for the slower start. It wasn’t a flawless book, but I don’t think every read has to be perfect to offer an enjoyable experience. Sometimes, it’s enough for a story to spark our interest, surprise us, and make us think about it even after we’ve closed the book.
Although I’m a huge fan of thrillers and believe this genre can be enjoyed at any time of the year, „The Psychiatrist” strikes me as one of those books that perfectly captures the atmosphere of autumn. It’s the ideal book to read on a chilly evening when it’s dark outside and your only concern is squeezing in one more chapter before bed. It has exactly that kind of eerie, mysterious atmosphere that gradually draws you into the story and makes you feel as though every character is hiding something. And if you enjoy psychological thrillers featuring complicated relationships, secrets that are gradually revealed, and situations that are never as simple as they seem, I think this book is worth giving a chance.
In conclusion, „The Psychiatrist” by Emma Curtis was an engaging read for me. It started off a little slowly but managed to surprise me with the way the two storylines intertwine and with a plot twist that changes the way you see the entire story. I enjoyed the characters precisely because they didn’t simply inspire sympathy but also frustration, distrust, and a desire to understand their choices. I appreciated the mystery, the atmosphere, and the way the author kept me searching for answers until things finally began to fall into place. Although the pacing at the beginning wasn’t ideal and some of the characters’ decisions made me raise an eyebrow, the overall reading experience was enjoyable and kept me curious until the very end.
I recommend this book to anyone who loves psychological thrillers featuring family secrets, flawed characters, complicated relationships, and plot twists that make you look at the story from an entirely different perspective. And if you’re looking for the perfect read for those dark autumn evenings, one that will immerse you in a mystery and have you trying to uncover the truth before the characters do, „The Psychiatrist” is a great choice.
