One Dark Window – Rachel Gillig (The Shepherd King, #1)

I had „One Dark Window” by Rachel Gillig on my TBR for quite some time, but for one reason or another, I kept putting it off. I think sometimes you come across a book that really draws you in, but you feel like you need to read it at the right moment. In this case, autumn seemed like the perfect choice. The dark cover, the fog, the mysterious atmosphere, and the synopsis all gave me the impression from the very beginning that this would be exactly the kind of book I was looking for this time of year. So, this time, I stopped making excuses and let myself be swept away into the world Rachel Gillig created.

The story follows Elspeth Spindle, a young woman who isn’t quite as ordinary as she seems. Living inside her mind is the Nightmare, an ancient and extremely dangerous spirit who can take control of her and who hides more secrets than I could have imagined at the beginning. His presence is, at the same time, one of the most interesting parts of the story. The Nightmare is the monster Elspeth needs in order to survive in a kingdom covered in mist and plagued by dark magic, but he is also one of the greatest threats to her. I really enjoyed the relationship between the two of them because it isn’t simple or easy to understand. There is always the feeling that something is hidden behind every conversation and that you can never be completely sure who is truly in control.

Elspeth becomes involved in a mission that is far bigger than herself and is connected to the magic that has begun destroying the kingdom. In order to stop it, the twelve Providence Cards must be found, objects that could hold the key to saving the kingdom. During this mission, she meets Ravyn, a mysterious character who initially appears to be a highwayman. It doesn’t take long, however, to discover that things are much more complicated: Ravyn is the king’s nephew and captain of the Destriers, and he has been accused of high treason. Together, Elspeth and Ravyn embark on a race against time to find the cards before the Solstice.

I really enjoyed the way Elspeth and Ravyn’s relationship develops gradually. It isn’t the kind of love story that appears out of nowhere and takes over the entire novel. Their attraction grows slowly, through distrust, secrets, danger, and moments when neither of them knows whether they can truly rely on the other. This slow development felt especially fitting for the atmosphere of the book. Ravyn is quite difficult to figure out, while Elspeth also keeps many things to herself. I often had the feeling that every character was hiding some important piece of the truth and that, if I trusted someone too much, I would probably end up regretting it.

In fact, the mystery and distrust were among the things I enjoyed most about the book. Almost none of the characters felt completely transparent to me. Even when I thought I was beginning to understand someone’s intentions, another detail would appear and make me change my mind. I liked this aspect because it maintained a constant sense of danger throughout the story. I never knew exactly who was telling the truth, who had their own hidden agenda, or who might betray someone once things became truly complicated.

Another element that really drew me in was the magic system. The idea of the cards, the magic that can heal or destroy, and the connection between it and the characters in the story was very interesting to me. I will admit, though, that this was also where I had one of my minor issues with the novel. Although the premise felt very original and immediately sparked my curiosity, there were moments when I got a little lost in the details. I actually had to go back a few pages and reread certain explanations to make sure I had understood what was happening correctly. I don’t think this ruined the reading experience, but it did make my journey through the story a little slower at times.

The atmosphere, on the other hand, was exactly what I had hoped to find when I picked up the book. The fog, the forest, the dark magic, the secrets, the mysterious creatures, and the constant feeling that something dangerous was lurking nearby created the perfect setting for an autumn read. The novel has that dark fairytale feeling, but with a more mature and dangerous edge. It’s one of those books I can imagine reading on a cold evening, with a warm drink beside you and the lights turned down low.

I found Elspeth to be an interesting character precisely because she has to constantly live with something dangerous inside her. She isn’t just a girl trying to save a kingdom; she’s also someone who has to fear her own magic and what might happen if she loses control. I enjoyed this inner struggle and the fact that her vulnerability doesn’t necessarily make her weak. On the contrary, the fact that she knows how dangerous the Nightmare is and still keeps moving forward made her easier to understand and connect with.

Ravyn caught my attention because of his mysterious nature and the fact that he is so difficult to read. At first, I wasn’t entirely sure what to make of him, and I never felt like I could completely trust his intentions. I actually enjoyed this uncertainty, because it made his relationship with Elspeth much more interesting. There is a tension between them that builds gradually and fits the pacing of the story very well.

Overall, I really enjoyed „One Dark Window”, and it gave me exactly the kind of dark and tense atmosphere I was looking for when I started it. It wasn’t a perfect read for me, especially because there were moments when I felt a little overwhelmed by the details surrounding the magic and the world the author created. At the same time, the central idea was so appealing to me that these drawbacks never managed to ruin my experience.

I think what surprised me most was that I don’t feel like I’ve read anything that closely resembles this story before. The combination of dark magic, mysterious cards, the Nightmare, the gothic fairytale atmosphere, and the slow-building relationship between Elspeth and Ravyn gave the book an identity of its own. Even though there were moments when I felt a little confused, I remained curious to find out what would happen next, and for me, that is one of the most important things a book can achieve.

The ending made me want to continue with the duology, and I’m already eager to read the next and final book, especially to see where Elspeth, Ravyn, and the Nightmare will end up and how the whole story will come to a close. I feel like there are still plenty of secrets to uncover and many questions that haven’t been answered yet.

So, for me, „One Dark Window” was a 4-star read out of 5: dark, mysterious, different, and filled with an atmosphere that completely drew me in, even if it occasionally required a little more attention and patience from me. It isn’t a flawless book, but there is something special about it, and most importantly, it made me want to return to this world and find out how the story will end.
