Watch Your Back – Tate James (Devil’s Backbone, #2)

After finishing the first book, I was left with a lot of questions and, more importantly, with quite a bit of curiosity about what was going to happen next. That’s exactly why I started the second book, hoping to find some answers and see where Ashley’s story and the story of the boys around her would go. Unfortunately, although there were a few elements that kept me reading, overall, „Watch Your Back” wasn’t really for me. And I think the problem has more to do with my current tastes than with the book itself. I feel like my reading preferences have been changing quite a lot lately, and some things that might have appealed to me a while ago don’t work quite as well for me anymore.

The book continues Ashley’s story in an atmosphere that maintains the combination of dark academia, mystery, danger, and plenty of romantic tension. At the center of the story, of course, is the secret society Devil’s Backbone, which becomes increasingly important as Ashley tries to understand what exactly she has gotten herself into. The society isn’t just a mysterious group where influential people make connections and build their futures, but something much darker, with rules, secrets, and real consequences. The more Ashley discovers, the clearer it becomes that no one enters this world without paying a price. And that price can be much higher than anyone could have imagined.

Ashley still felt like an interesting character to me, especially because she is caught in a situation that she cannot completely control. She has difficult decisions to make and tries to protect the people around her while also dealing with her own feelings and all the dangers that keep appearing. Around her, we have the boys, each with their own personality and their own relationship with Ashley. They are protective, impulsive, mysterious, and, at times, quite difficult to understand. The relationships between the characters develop throughout the book and become increasingly complicated, and this is exactly where I had my biggest problem with the story.

I have to say that the reverse harem/why choose trope just didn’t work for me anymore. If, in the first book, I was more willing to see where this dynamic would go, here I felt much more strongly that it simply wasn’t something I wanted to read. Ashley’s interactions with the boys often made me feel more uncomfortable than invested in the story, and some of the interactions between the boys themselves were just as difficult for me to follow. I’m not saying that the dynamic is poorly written or that it can’t work for other readers, but simply that, for me, it became one of the biggest drawbacks of the book.

On the other hand, the mystery was the main reason I didn’t DNF the book. Even when the romantic aspect wasn’t working for me, I still wanted to find out what was going on with Devil’s Backbone, what was hiding behind all the secrets, and how far things would go for Ashley and the people around her. There is a constant tension throughout the story, and the situations gradually become more dangerous. There are moments when you think the characters have finally managed to find a solution, only for the story to throw another problem their way.

I also liked the fact that the book maintains that sense of danger constantly hanging over the characters. You don’t always know who is telling the truth, who is hiding something, or how much Ashley and the boys can really trust one another. Those questions were what kept me reading, even during the moments when the book wasn’t entirely to my taste. For me, the suspense and mystery were much more interesting than the romantic storyline.

And, of course, the ending is a huge cliffhanger. After everything that happens throughout the book, the author manages to end it at a point that raises even more questions. It’s the kind of ending that makes you stare at the last page and wonder what just happened and where the story could possibly go from here. I have to admit that this ending did make me seriously consider the next book, even though, at the same time, I’m still not sure whether I actually want to continue the series.

Overall, „Watch Your Back” was a book that had a few interesting elements for me, but also quite a few significant drawbacks. I liked the mystery, I liked the dark atmosphere, and I liked the fact that the story kept raising questions, but the reverse harem aspect and the romantic dynamics between the characters became quite a major obstacle for me. I started the book because I wanted to find out what would happen after the ending of the first one and, in a way, I’m glad I continued, especially because now I have even more questions. On the other hand, I can’t say that this sequel completely won me over.

For now, I’m sticking with 3 stars. I don’t consider it a bad book, but rather one that didn’t quite match my current tastes. I’m curious to find out how the trilogy will end, especially after that cliffhanger, but I still haven’t decided whether I’ll actually read the final book. Maybe that curiosity will be enough to bring me back to the series, but for now, I need a little break from Ashley, the boys, and all the secrets surrounding the Devil’s Backbone society.
