Dacă ai terminat „Metal Slinger” și ai rămas cu senzația că nu poți să-ți vezi liniștit de viață până nu afli ce se întâmplă mai departe, atunci te înțeleg perfect. Eu una abia am așteptat să pun mâna pe „Light Wielder”. După finalul primului volum, mai ales după acel plot twist care a reușit să împartă cititorii în două tabere, aveam nevoie să aflu ce urma pentru Jovie și Acker. Și pot spune de la început că volumul doi mi-a plăcut chiar mai mult decât primul. Dacă „Metal Slinger” m-a făcut să-mi țin respirația până la ultima pagină, „Light Wielder” m-a făcut să uit complet că ar trebui să mai și dorm.
Povestea se petrece la câțiva ani după evenimentele din primul volum, iar lumea pe care o regăsim este una mult mai întunecată și mai complicată. Războiul a schimbat totul, iar personajele noastre nu mai sunt aceleași. Jovie a trecut prin atât de multe încât nu mai este fata nesigură pe care am cunoscut-o la început. Acum este un comandant care trebuie să-și conducă oamenii într-un război care pare că nu mai are sfârșit. Este mai puternică, mai hotărâtă și mult mai conștientă de responsabilitatea pe care o are, dar asta nu înseamnă că rănile trecutului au dispărut. Dimpotrivă, ajungem să vedem cât de mult au lăsat urme toate lucrurile prin care a trecut.
Nici Acker nu mai este același. În timp ce încearcă să-și protejeze regatul și oamenii, el trebuie să facă față unui tată tiranic, unor alianțe politice complicate și unor decizii care îl împing din ce în ce mai aproape de limitele sale. Iar ca și cum toate acestea nu ar fi fost suficiente, Acker este căsătorit cu o altă femeie din motive politice. Practic, avem un prinț prins într-o căsătorie de conveniență, o Sortită pe care nu poate să o uite și două popoare care se află în război. Exact genul de situație simplă și liniștită de care aveam nevoie.
Relația dintre Jovie și Acker rămâne, pentru mine, unul dintre cele mai interesante aspecte ale seriei. Sunt legați printr-o conexiune pe care niciunul dintre ei nu o poate controla complet, dar în același timp se află în tabere opuse. Și tocmai aici apare una dintre cele mai mari surse de tensiune ale cărții. Ziua sunt oameni care trebuie să lupte pentru propriile popoare, iar noaptea legătura dintre ei refuză să dispară. Pentru a nu-și mai putea auzi vocile și pentru a reduce efectele Legăturii, amândoi ajung să poarte lanțuri de piatră mangi care le suprimă magia, iar aceste lanțuri nu sunt deloc ceva ușor de suportat.
Mi s-a părut foarte interesant modul în care această legătură dintre ei este transformată într-o problemă care depășește cu mult partea romantică. Nu mai vorbim doar despre doi oameni care se iubesc sau sunt atrași unul de celălalt. Legătura lor are consecințe asupra războiului, asupra alianțelor și asupra oamenilor pe care încearcă să-i protejeze. Amândoi încearcă să obțină cele mai bune rezultate pentru popoarele lor, chiar dacă asta înseamnă să ia decizii care îi îndepărtează unul de celălalt. În același timp, atracția dintre ei este imposibil de ignorat. Și, sincer, după cât de mult am stat cu sufletul la gură în „Metal Slinger”, m-am trezit întrebându-mă aproape constant: de data aceasta vor reuși să fie împreună sau urmează o nouă trădare?
Iar dacă există ceva ce Rachel Schneider știe să facă foarte bine, sunt plot twisturile. Credeam că după „Metal Slinger” eram deja pregătită pentru stilul ei și că nu voi mai putea fi luată prin surprindere atât de ușor. M-am înșelat. Chiar dacă știam deja la ce să mă aștept de la autoare, „Light Wielder” a continuat să-mi ofere momente în care trebuia să mă opresc din citit și să procesez ceea ce tocmai aflasem. Sunt informații dezvăluite treptat, secrete, alianțe neașteptate și personaje despre care ajungi să te întrebi dacă pot fi cu adevărat de încredere.
Mi-a plăcut foarte mult și faptul că personajele sunt dezvoltate din ce în ce mai mult. Nu am avut senzația că doar asistăm la o poveste de dragoste pusă peste un război și o lume fantasy. Din contră, fiecare dintre personaje are propriile motivații, propriile frici și propriile conflicte. Pe măsură ce avansăm, ajungem să le înțelegem mai bine alegerile și să vedem de ce anumite decizii sunt atât de greu de luat. Jovie și Acker sunt în continuare în centrul poveștii, dar și personajele secundare contribuie la felul în care se dezvoltă lumea și conflictul.
Acțiunea este foarte alertă și cred că acesta este unul dintre motivele pentru care mi-a fost atât de greu să las cartea din mână. Avem lupte, intrigi politice, comploturi, alianțe care apar exact când te aștepți mai puțin și un război care pare să nu se mai termine. În același timp, povestea romantică nu este niciodată lăsată complet în urmă. Tensiunea dintre Jovie și Acker continuă să crească, iar faptul că ei trebuie să se lupte atât cu propriile sentimente, cât și cu lumea din jurul lor face ca fiecare întâlnire dintre ei să fie și mai importantă.
Unul dintre lucrurile care mi-au plăcut cel mai mult este contrastul dintre ceea ce se întâmplă pe câmpul de luptă și ceea ce se întâmplă atunci când Legătura dintre cei doi se activează. În timp ce lumea din jurul lor este plină de violență și zgomot, există aceste momente în care ei ajung să se simtă unul pe celălalt de la distanță. Acker poate ajunge să o vadă pe Jovie în momentele ei cele mai vulnerabile, după bătălii, epuizată și rănită, iar toate acestea fac ca relația lor să fie și mai dureroasă și mai complicată. Fragmentul în care el o găsește dormind după o bătălie mi s-a părut un exemplu foarte bun pentru dinamica lor: chiar și după tot timpul care a trecut și după toate lucrurile care s-au întâmplat între ei, sentimentele nu au dispărut.
Și, evident, nu puteam să nu vorbesc despre magie. Sistemul de magie rămâne unul dintre elementele care fac seria atât de interesantă pentru mine. Nu este o magie fără consecințe, pe care personajele o pot folosi oricum și oricând. Are un cost, poate fi controlată, suprimată și chiar transformată într-o armă. În „Light Wielder”, înțelegem și mai bine cât de importantă este magia pentru lumea creată de Rachel Schneider și cât de multe lucruri pot fi pierdute atunci când oamenii încearcă să o controleze.
Personal, simt că „Light Wielder” a reușit să ducă tot ce mi-a plăcut la primul volum la un alt nivel. Am început cartea cu foarte multe întrebări și cu așteptări destul de mari, dar am primit în schimb și mai multe motive să fiu obsedată de serie. Mi-a plăcut mai mult decât „Metal Slinger”, ceea ce nu credeam că va fi posibil, mai ales după cât de tare m-a prins primul volum.
Și partea cea mai bună este că povestea nu se termină aici. Rachel Schneider a anunțat că va mai urma încă un volum, iar eu sunt sincer extrem de bucuroasă, pentru că nu sunt absolut deloc pregătită să mă despart de aceste personaje. Simt că abia am început să descopăr lumea pe care a creat-o autoarea și încă sunt foarte multe lucruri pe care vreau să le aflu. În momentul de față, seria aceasta are toate șansele să devină una dintre acele serii pe care le voi recomanda tuturor și despre care voi continua să vorbesc mult timp după ce le termin.
Dacă ai citit „Metal Slinger”, cred că este imposibil să nu vrei să continui. Dacă nu l-ai citit încă, atunci ia asta ca pe un semn să începi seria, dar pregătește-te sufletește pentru faptul că nici după „Light Wielder” nu vei avea toate răspunsurile pe care le cauți.
Pentru mine, „Light Wielder” a fost exact genul de continuare pe care mi-o doream: mai multă acțiune, mai multă magie, mai multe intrigi, personaje care cresc și se schimbă, o relație plină de tensiune și suficiente răsturnări de situație cât să nu mă simt nici măcar o clipă în siguranță în timp ce citeam. Este o poveste despre iubire, loialitate, sacrificiu și despre cât de departe sunt dispuși oamenii să meargă pentru cei pe care îi consideră familia lor.

If you finished „Metal Slinger” and were left with the feeling that you simply couldn’t get on with your life until you found out what happened next, then I completely understand you. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on „Light Wielder”. After the ending of the first book, especially after that plot twist that managed to divide readers into two camps, I needed to know what would happen to Jovie and Acker. And I can say right from the start that I actually enjoyed the second book even more than the first. If „Metal Slinger” had me holding my breath until the very last page, „Light Wielder” made me completely forget that I was supposed to sleep.
The story takes place a few years after the events of the first book, and the world we return to is much darker and more complicated. The war has changed everything, and our characters are no longer the same. Jovie has been through so much that she is no longer the insecure girl we met at the beginning. Now she is a commander who has to lead her people through a war that seems to have no end. She is stronger, more determined, and much more aware of the responsibility she carries, but that doesn’t mean the wounds of the past have disappeared. Quite the opposite—we get to see just how deeply everything she has been through has affected her.
Acker has changed too. As he tries to protect his kingdom and his people, he has to deal with a tyrannical father, complicated political alliances, and decisions that push him closer and closer to his limits. And as if all of that weren’t enough, Acker is married to another woman for political reasons. So, basically, we have a prince trapped in a marriage of convenience, a Fated one he can’t forget, and two nations at war. Exactly the kind of simple and peaceful situation I needed.
The relationship between Jovie and Acker remains, for me, one of the most interesting aspects of the series. They are bound by a connection that neither of them can completely control, while at the same time they find themselves on opposite sides. And this is where one of the book’s biggest sources of tension comes from. During the day, they are people who have to fight for their own nations, while at night, the bond between them refuses to disappear. In order to stop hearing each other’s voices and reduce the effects of the Bond, they both end up wearing mangi stone chains that suppress their magic—and these chains are definitely not easy to endure.
I really liked the way their connection is turned into a problem that goes far beyond the romantic aspect. We are no longer simply talking about two people who love or are attracted to each other. Their bond has consequences for the war, for political alliances, and for the people they are trying to protect. They are both trying to achieve the best possible outcome for their respective nations, even if that means making decisions that push them further apart. At the same time, the attraction between them is impossible to ignore. And, honestly, after spending so much of „Metal Slinger” on the edge of my seat, I found myself constantly wondering: will they finally manage to be together this time, or are we heading toward another betrayal?
And if there is one thing Rachel Schneider knows how to do very well, it’s plot twists. I thought that after „Metal Slinger”, I was already prepared for her style and that she wouldn’t be able to surprise me quite as easily anymore. I was wrong. Even though I already knew what to expect from the author, „Light Wielder” continued to give me moments where I had to stop reading and process what I had just learned. There are gradually revealed secrets, unexpected alliances, and characters who make you wonder whether they can truly be trusted.
I also really enjoyed how much more developed the characters are. I never felt like I was simply watching a love story placed on top of a war and a fantasy world. Quite the opposite—each character has their own motivations, fears, and conflicts. As we move forward, we come to understand their choices better and see why certain decisions are so difficult to make. Jovie and Acker are still at the center of the story, but the secondary characters also contribute to the way the world and the conflict develop.
The pacing is incredibly fast, and I think that is one of the reasons it was so difficult for me to put the book down. We have battles, political intrigue, conspiracies, alliances that appear exactly when you least expect them, and a war that seems like it will never end. At the same time, the romance is never completely pushed into the background. The tension between Jovie and Acker continues to build, and the fact that they have to fight both their own feelings and the world around them makes every encounter between them even more significant.
One of the things I enjoyed most is the contrast between what happens on the battlefield and what happens when the Bond between them is activated. While the world around them is filled with violence and noise, there are these moments when they can feel each other from a distance. Acker can see Jovie during some of her most vulnerable moments—after battles, exhausted and injured—and all of this makes their relationship even more painful and complicated. The scene where he finds her sleeping after a battle felt like such a good example of their dynamic: even after all the time that has passed and everything that has happened between them, their feelings haven’t disappeared.
And, of course, I couldn’t not talk about the magic. The magic system remains one of the elements that makes the series so interesting to me. It isn’t magic without consequences, something the characters can simply use whenever and however they want. It has a cost; it can be controlled, suppressed, and even turned into a weapon. In „Light Wielder”, we also get a better understanding of just how important magic is to the world Rachel Schneider has created and how much can be lost when people try to control it.
Personally, I feel that „Light Wielder” managed to take everything I loved about the first book and bring it to another level. I started the book with so many questions and fairly high expectations, but instead, I ended up with even more reasons to be obsessed with the series. I enjoyed it more than „Metal Slinger”, which I honestly didn’t think would be possible, especially after being so completely hooked by the first book.
And the best part is that the story doesn’t end here. Rachel Schneider has announced that one more book is coming, and I am genuinely extremely happy about that because I am absolutely not ready to say goodbye to these characters. I feel like I’ve only just begun to discover the world the author has created, and there are still so many things I want to find out. At this point, this series has every chance of becoming one of those series I recommend to everyone and continue talking about long after I’ve finished reading it.
If you’ve read „Metal Slinger”, I think it’s impossible not to want to continue. If you haven’t read it yet, then take this as a sign to start the series—but prepare yourself for the fact that even after „Light Wielder”, you won’t have all the answers you’re looking for.
For me, „Light Wielder” was exactly the kind of sequel I wanted: more action, more magic, more intrigue, characters who grow and change, a relationship filled with tension, and enough twists and turns to make sure I didn’t feel safe for even a second while reading. It’s a story about love, loyalty, sacrifice, and just how far people are willing to go for those they consider family.
