Sunt puține serii thriller sau crime la care mă întorc cu aceeași bucurie de fiecare dată, iar seria „Fjällbacka” ocupă, fără îndoială, un loc special în sufletul meu. Primele zece volume m-au cucerit complet, așa că abia așteptam să revin în micul oraș suedez și să mă reîntâlnesc cu personajele de care m-am atașat atât de mult de-a lungul anilor. În plus, nu mai este niciun secret că autorii nordici sunt favoriții mei când vine vorba de romane thriller și crime. Atmosfera rece, anchetele complexe, personajele imperfecte și modul în care sunt explorate laturile întunecate ale naturii umane sunt exact elementele pe care le caut într-o astfel de lectură. Camilla Läckberg este una dintre autoarele care mi-au deschis apetitul pentru literatura crime scandinavă, iar seria „Fjällbacka” a fost prima mea întâlnire cu scrisul ei. Tocmai de aceea, fiecare nou volum vine la pachet cu o doză de nostalgie, dar și cu așteptări foarte mari. Din fericire, „Puiul de cuc” nu doar că s-a ridicat la nivelul acestora, ci mi-a reamintit de ce iubesc atât de mult această serie.
Acțiunea începe în forță și nu lasă prea mult timp cititorului să se acomodeze. Fjällbacka este zguduită de două tragedii care, la prima vedere, par separate. Un fotograf celebru este ucis cu o cruzime greu de imaginat chiar în timpul unei expoziții, iar la scurt timp, pe insula unde scriitorul și laureatul Premiului Nobel Henning Bauer se retrage pentru a lucra în liniște, are loc o altă crimă șocantă. Cu cât ancheta avansează, cu atât devine mai evident că cele două cazuri ascund legături vechi și periculoase. Atât fotograful, cât și Henning Bauer au făcut parte din enigmaticul club exclusivist Blanche, iar secretele păstrate acolo încep, încet-încet, să iasă la suprafață.
În paralel cu investigația oficială condusă de Patrik Hedström, Erica Falck pornește pe cont propriu într-o cercetare legată de uciderea unui transsexual petrecută la Stockholm în anii ’80. La început, cele două fire narative par complet independente, însă Camilla Läckberg le construiește cu foarte multă răbdare și atenție, iar piesele puzzle-ului încep să se așeze treptat. Mi-a plăcut foarte mult felul în care trecutul și prezentul se împletesc, demonstrând încă o dată că unele greșeli și nedreptăți nu rămân niciodată cu adevărat îngropate. Autoarea explorează teme sensibile precum abuzul de putere, discriminarea, influența lumii culturale și efectele devastatoare ale unor decizii luate cu zeci de ani în urmă, fără ca aceste subiecte să umbrească partea polițistă a poveștii.
Trebuie să recunosc că începutul poate părea puțin copleșitor. Sunt introduse numeroase personaje, fiecare cu propriul rol și propria poveste, iar legăturile dintre ele nu sunt deloc evidente din primele capitole. Pentru o vreme ai impresia că urmărești mai multe povești diferite și că este imposibil să le conectezi. Totuși, exact aici se vede măiestria autoarei. Dacă ai răbdare și îi acorzi timpul necesar, toate aceste fire narative se unesc într-un mod spectaculos. Nimic nu este întâmplător, iar fiecare personaj, indiferent cât de nesemnificativ pare inițial, ajunge să aibă un rol bine definit în imaginea de ansamblu. Tocmai această construcție atentă face ca finalul să fie cu atât mai satisfăcător.
Ca de fiecare dată, adevăratele vedete ale seriei rămân Patrik Hedström și Erica Falck. Mi-a făcut o deosebită plăcere să îi revăd împreună și să observ cât de natural a evoluat relația lor de-a lungul seriei. Patrik continuă să fie un polițist extrem de inteligent, perseverent și dedicat, care nu renunță nici atunci când ancheta pare să bată pasul pe loc. În același timp, Erica demonstrează încă o dată că instinctul ei de jurnalist și curiozitatea aproape imposibil de stăvilit o transformă într-un aliat important al investigației. Îmi place foarte mult că autoarea nu îi definește doar prin profesiile lor, ci îi prezintă și în viața de familie. Îi vedem încercând să găsească un echilibru între muncă și responsabilitățile de acasă, confruntându-se cu oboseala, frustrările și micile probleme cotidiene pe care le are orice familie. Tocmai aceste momente aparent obișnuite îi fac atât de autentici și atât de ușor de îndrăgit. După atâtea volume petrecute alături de ei, ai impresia că revii în vizită la niște vechi prieteni.
Un alt aspect care mi-a plăcut enorm a fost ritmul poveștii. Deși romanul este destul de amplu și foarte dens în informații, nu am simțit nicio clipă că acțiunea stagnează. Din contră, fiecare capitol aduce o informație nouă, o pistă diferită sau un detaliu care schimbă complet perspectiva asupra cazului. Suspansul este construit excelent, iar autoarea știe exact când să ofere răspunsuri și când să ridice și mai multe semne de întrebare. De fiecare dată când aveam impresia că am identificat vinovatul, apărea un nou indiciu care îmi răsturna complet teoria. Misterul este atât de bine ascuns, încât adevărul devine clar abia în ultimele pagini, iar dezvăluirea finală reușește să surprindă fără să pară forțată.
Mi-a plăcut foarte mult și modul în care Camilla Läckberg alternează prezentul cu secvențele din trecut. Aceste incursiuni nu există doar pentru a crea suspans, ci contribuie enorm la dezvoltarea personajelor și la înțelegerea relațiilor dintre ele. Fiecare revenire în trecut adaugă o nouă piesă puzzle-ului și oferă explicații pentru comportamente, decizii și conflicte care, altfel, ar fi rămas greu de înțeles. În același timp, această structură narativă menține permanent sentimentul că există încă multe secrete care așteaptă să fie descoperite.
Mi s-a părut fascinant și felul în care autoarea îmbină atmosfera întunecată specifică romanelor nordice cu latura profund umană a seriei. Dincolo de crimele brutale și de ancheta complexă, „Puiul de cuc” vorbește despre vină, loialitate, familie, putere și consecințele unor alegeri făcute cu foarte mulți ani în urmă. Personajele nu sunt împărțite simplu în bune și rele, ci sunt construite cu foarte multe nuanțe, iar motivațiile lor sunt explorate cu atenție. Tocmai această profunzime face ca povestea să rămână cu tine și după ce ai închis cartea.
Nu este deloc greu de înțeles de ce atât de mulți critici consideră acest roman unul dintre cele mai puternice din întreaga serie. Se simte experiența pe care Camilla Läckberg a acumulat-o în aproape două decenii de când a creat universul „Fjällbacka”. Stilul ei este matur, sigur pe sine, personajele sunt memorabile, dialogurile sunt naturale, iar intriga este construită cu o precizie impresionantă. În plus, autoarea continuă să surprindă prin modul în care îmbină suspansul cu observațiile fine despre societate și natura umană, fără să piardă niciodată din vedere emoția și atașamentul cititorului față de personaje.
Pentru mine, „Puiul de cuc” a fost exact genul de thriller pe care îl caut mereu: inteligent, bine construit, tensionat și imposibil de lăsat din mână. Este o revenire excelentă în universul „Fjällbacka” și încă o dovadă că această serie rămâne una dintre cele mai reușite din literatura crime nordică. Dacă sunteți deja fani ai Camillei Läckberg, sunt convinsă că veți savura fiecare pagină. Iar dacă încă nu ați făcut cunoștință cu Patrik și Erica, această serie merită cu siguranță descoperită, pentru că oferă exact combinația pe care o iubesc într-un thriller: mister, personaje memorabile, emoție și un final care reușește să surprindă până în ultimul moment. Din partea mea, este fără nicio urmă de îndoială o lectură de 5 stele.

There are only a handful of thriller and crime series that I return to with the same excitement every single time, and the „Fjällbacka” series undoubtedly holds a special place in my heart. The first ten books completely won me over, so I couldn’t wait to return to the small Swedish town and reunite with the characters I’ve grown so attached to over the years. It’s also no secret that Nordic authors are my absolute favorites when it comes to thrillers and crime fiction. The cold atmosphere, intricate investigations, flawed characters, and the way they explore the darker sides of human nature are exactly what I look for in this genre. Camilla Läckberg was one of the authors who introduced me to Scandinavian crime fiction, and the „Fjällbacka” series was my very first experience with her writing. Because of that, every new installment comes with a healthy dose of nostalgia, as well as very high expectations. Thankfully, „The Cuckoo” not only lived up to them but also reminded me why I fell in love with this series in the first place.
The story wastes no time getting started and immediately throws the reader into the action. Fjällbacka is shaken by two tragic events that, at first glance, seem completely unrelated. A famous photographer is brutally murdered during an exhibition, and shortly afterward, another shocking murder takes place on the island where bestselling author and Nobel Prize winner Henning Bauer has retreated to work in peace. As the investigation progresses, it becomes increasingly clear that the two cases are connected by dangerous secrets buried deep in the past. Both the photographer and Henning Bauer were members of the mysterious and exclusive Blanche Club, and the secrets hidden within its walls slowly begin to surface.
Running alongside the official investigation led by Patrik Hedström, Erica Falck embarks on her own inquiry into the murder of a transgender person that took place in Stockholm during the 1980s. At first, the two storylines seem entirely separate, but Camilla Läckberg develops them with remarkable patience and precision, gradually allowing all the puzzle pieces to fall into place. I especially loved the way the past and present intertwine, once again showing that some mistakes and injustices never truly stay buried. The novel explores sensitive topics such as abuse of power, discrimination, the influence of the cultural elite, and the devastating consequences of decisions made decades earlier, all without ever overshadowing the central murder investigation.
I have to admit that the beginning can feel a little overwhelming. A large number of characters are introduced, each with their own role and backstory, and the connections between them aren’t immediately obvious. For a while, it feels as though you’re following several completely different stories that couldn’t possibly fit together. However, this is exactly where Läckberg’s skill as a storyteller truly shines. If you’re patient and allow the story to unfold at its own pace, every narrative thread eventually comes together in an incredibly satisfying way. Nothing is accidental, and every character, no matter how insignificant they may initially seem, ultimately plays an important role in the bigger picture. It’s this careful construction that makes the ending so rewarding.
As always, the true heart of the series remains Patrik Hedström and Erica Falck. It was such a pleasure to spend time with them again and to see how naturally their relationship has evolved throughout the series. Patrik continues to be an intelligent, determined, and deeply dedicated detective who refuses to give up even when the investigation seems to reach a dead end. At the same time, Erica once again proves that her journalistic instincts and relentless curiosity make her an invaluable part of uncovering the truth. One of the things I love most about this series is that Läckberg never defines them solely by their professions. We also see them in their everyday family life, trying to balance demanding careers with raising children, dealing with exhaustion, frustration, and the ordinary struggles that every family experiences. These seemingly simple moments make them feel incredibly authentic and easy to care about. After spending so many books with them, returning to Fjällbacka feels like visiting old friends.
Another aspect I absolutely loved was the pacing. Even though the novel is fairly long and packed with information, it never felt slow or repetitive. Every chapter introduces a new clue, a fresh lead, or an unexpected revelation that completely changes your understanding of the case. The suspense is masterfully handled, and Läckberg knows exactly when to answer a question and when to leave the reader with even more. Every time I thought I had figured out the killer, another clue completely dismantled my theory. The mystery is so carefully hidden that the truth doesn’t become clear until the very last pages, and the final reveal is both surprising and entirely believable.
I also really appreciated the way Camilla Läckberg alternates between the present-day investigation and scenes from the past. These flashbacks don’t exist simply to create suspense—they add tremendous depth to both the characters and their relationships. Every return to the past provides another crucial piece of the puzzle and explains behaviors, decisions, and conflicts that would otherwise remain difficult to understand. At the same time, this narrative structure maintains a constant sense that there are still many secrets waiting to be uncovered.
I was equally fascinated by how the author blends the dark atmosphere typical of Nordic crime fiction with the deeply human side of the story. Beyond the brutal murders and the intricate investigation, „The Cuckoo” is ultimately a novel about guilt, loyalty, family, power, and the long-lasting consequences of choices made many years ago. The characters are never divided into simple categories of good and evil. Instead, they’re portrayed with remarkable complexity, and their motivations are explored with great care. It’s this emotional depth that makes the story stay with you long after you’ve finished the final page.
It’s easy to understand why so many critics consider this one of the strongest novels in the entire series. You can truly feel the experience Camilla Läckberg has gained over nearly two decades of building the „Fjällbacka” universe. Her writing is confident and mature, the characters are unforgettable, the dialogue feels natural, and the plot is constructed with impressive precision. At the same time, she continues to impress with her ability to combine gripping suspense with thoughtful observations about society and human nature, without ever losing sight of the emotional connection readers have with her characters.
For me, „The Cuckoo” was exactly the kind of thriller I’m always searching for: intelligent, expertly crafted, suspenseful, and impossible to put down. It’s a fantastic return to the world of Fjällbacka and yet another reminder of why this remains one of the finest Nordic crime series ever written. If you’re already a fan of Camilla Läckberg, I’m certain you’ll enjoy every single page. And if you haven’t met Patrik and Erica yet, this series is absolutely worth discovering because it offers everything I love in a thriller: an intriguing mystery, unforgettable characters, genuine emotion, and an ending that keeps you guessing until the very last moment. Without the slightest hesitation, this is a five-star read for me.
