Am început „Mănâncă, ucide, iubește” de Julie Mae Cohen cu așteptări destul de mari. Titlul mi s-a părut ingenios, iar descrierea cărții m-a făcut să cred că voi descoperi un thriller plin de suspans, personaje memorabile și răsturnări de situație surprinzătoare. Premisa este, fără îndoială, una foarte atrăgătoare: trei femei complet diferite ajung să fie legate de același bărbat care le-a mințit și manipulat, iar situația în care se regăsesc promite multă tensiune, umor negru și momente neașteptate.
Povestea le are în centru pe Marina, Lilah și Opal. Marina este o mamă divorțată care încearcă să facă față responsabilităților de zi cu zi și creșterii celor trei copii ai săi. Lilah este o bibliotecară retrasă și timidă, o femeie care pare să prefere liniștea cărților în locul interacțiunilor sociale. În contrast cu ele, Opal este o fostă vedetă a fitnessului care traversează o perioadă dificilă din viața sa, confruntându-se atât cu probleme financiare, cât și cu schimbările aduse de menopauză. La prima vedere, cele trei nu au nimic în comun, însă descoperă că au fost păcălite de același bărbat fermecător, iar acest lucru le aduce împreună într-un mod cât se poate de neobișnuit.
Pe măsură ce povestea avansează, relația dintre cele trei femei devine elementul central al romanului. Deși sunt foarte diferite ca personalitate și stil de viață, ele încep să construiască o prietenie bazată pe încredere, sprijin și experiențe comune. În jurul lor apar tot mai multe probleme și complicații, iar fiecare trebuie să decidă cât de departe este dispusă să meargă pentru a se proteja pe sine și pe celelalte. Mi-a plăcut faptul că autoarea a acordat atenție dezvoltării personajelor și relațiilor dintre ele, iar fiecare dintre cele trei protagoniste a avut propriul moment în care a putut să strălucească.
Cu toate acestea, deși ideea de bază mi s-a părut foarte promițătoare, lectura nu a reușit să mă captiveze atât de mult pe cât speram. Ritmul acțiunii mi s-a părut destul de lent în multe momente, iar tensiunea specifică unui thriller a fost prezentă mai degrabă în doze mici. Au existat pasaje care au insistat mai mult asupra relațiilor dintre personaje și asupra mesajelor transmise decât asupra suspansului propriu-zis, iar acest lucru a făcut ca interesul meu să fluctueze pe parcursul lecturii.
Personajele au fost, în schimb, unul dintre punctele forte ale cărții. Mi s-au părut bine conturate și suficient de diferite încât să ofere perspective interesante asupra poveștii. Am apreciat modul în care autoarea a explorat vulnerabilitățile, frustrările și dorințele fiecărei femei, arătând cât de complicată poate fi viața dincolo de aparențe.
În ceea ce privește impresia generală, am avut sentimentul că romanul împrumută anumite elemente care amintesc de celebra poveste „Eat, Pray, Love”, însă le combină cu umor negru, situații absurde și o doză moderată de thriller. În același timp, cartea pune un accent puternic pe solidaritatea feminină, independență și puterea femeilor de a se reinventa după experiențe dificile. De multe ori, mesajele despre feminism și susținerea reciprocă dintre femei au ocupat un loc mai important decât misterul sau suspansul.
Per total, „Mănâncă, ucide, iubește” a fost o lectură plăcută, cu personaje interesante și câteva momente amuzante, dar nu a reușit să se ridice la nivelul așteptărilor pe care mi le-am creat înainte de a o începe. Deși am apreciat temele abordate și relația dintre protagoniste, mi-aș fi dorit mai multă tensiune și un ritm mai alert. Pentru mine, a fost o carte de trei stele, care are câteva idei bune și un mesaj puternic despre prietenie și puterea feminină, care însă nu m-a convins pe deplin privind partea thriller.
Eat, Slay, Love – Julie Mae Cohen
I started „Eat, Slay, Love” by Julie Mae Cohen with fairly high expectations. The title struck me as clever, and the book’s description made me believe I was about to discover a thriller full of suspense, memorable characters, and surprising twists. The premise is undoubtedly very appealing: three completely different women find themselves connected to the same man who has lied to and manipulated them, and the situation they end up in promises plenty of tension, dark humor, and unexpected moments.
The story centers on Marina, Lilah, and Opal. Marina is a divorced mother trying to cope with everyday responsibilities and raising her three children. Lilah is a reserved and shy librarian, a woman who seems to prefer the quiet company of books over social interactions. In contrast, Opal is a former fitness star going through a difficult period in her life, dealing with both financial troubles and the changes brought on by menopause. At first glance, the three women have nothing in common, but they soon discover that they have all been deceived by the same charming man, and this realization brings them together in a most unusual way.
As the story progresses, the relationship between the three women becomes the central element of the novel. Although they are very different in terms of personality and lifestyle, they begin to build a friendship based on trust, support, and shared experiences. More and more problems and complications arise around them, and each woman must decide how far she is willing to go to protect herself and the others. I liked the fact that the author paid close attention to character development and the relationships between them, and each of the three protagonists had her own moment to shine.
However, although I found the premise very promising, the book did not manage to captivate me as much as I had hoped. The pace felt rather slow in many places, and the tension one would expect from a thriller was present only in small doses. There were passages that focused more on the relationships between the characters and the messages being conveyed than on actual suspense, and this caused my interest to fluctuate throughout the reading experience.
The characters, on the other hand, were one of the book’s strongest points. They felt well-developed and distinct enough to offer interesting perspectives on the story. I appreciated the way the author explored each woman’s vulnerabilities, frustrations, and desires, showing how complicated life can be beneath the surface.
As for my overall impression, I felt that the novel borrows certain elements reminiscent of the famous story „Eat, Pray, Love”, but combines them with dark humor, absurd situations, and a moderate dose of thriller. At the same time, the book places a strong emphasis on female solidarity, independence, and the ability of women to reinvent themselves after difficult experiences. More often than not, the messages about feminism and women supporting one another took center stage over the mystery or suspense.
Overall, „Eat, Slay, Love” was an enjoyable read with interesting characters and a few amusing moments, but it did not quite live up to the expectations I had before starting it. While I appreciated the themes explored and the relationship between the protagonists, I would have liked more tension and a faster pace. For me, it was a three-star book with some good ideas and a powerful message about friendship and female empowerment, but one that did not fully convince me when it came to the thriller aspect.
