„Rivali divini” de Rebecca Ross a fost una dintre acele cărți care au stat foarte mult timp pe lista mea de lecturi. O vedeam recomandată peste tot, auzeam numai cuvinte de laudă despre ea și, recunosc, aveam așteptări destul de mari. Tocmai de aceea mă bucur enorm că am ajuns, în sfârșit, să o citesc, pentru că a reușit să mă cucerească de la primele pagini și să îmi confirme că își merită pe deplin succesul și aprecierea de care se bucură. A fost o lectură care m-a ținut complet captivată și care mi-a oferit exact acel amestec de emoție, romantism, acțiune și magie pe care îl caut într-un fantasy bine scris.
Povestea ne poartă într-o lume aflată în pragul distrugerii, unde zeii, după secole de tăcere, au început din nou să se războiască, iar oamenii sunt prinși la mijloc într-un conflict devastator. În centrul poveștii se află Iris Winnow, o tânără de doar optsprezece ani care încearcă să își țină familia unită într-o perioadă extrem de dificilă. Mama ei se luptă cu propriile dependențe, iar fratele său a dispărut după ce a fost trimis pe front. Determinată să își schimbe viața și să își ajute familia, Iris muncește din greu pentru a obține o promovare la Gazeta de Oath, unde lucrează ca jurnalistă.
La locul de muncă îl întâlnește pe Roman Kitt, principalul său rival. Roman pare să aibă totul: talent, încredere și o atitudine care o irită constant pe Iris. Competiția dintre ei este prezentă încă de la început și oferă multe momente tensionate și pline de farmec. Totuși, ceea ce niciunul dintre ei nu știe este că o conexiune magică îi apropie în secret. Iris obișnuiește să îi scrie scrisori fratelui dispărut, pe care le ascunde sub ușa unui șifonier fermecat. În mod misterios, aceste scrisori nu ajung însă la destinatarul dorit, ci în mâinile lui Roman. Sub protecția anonimatului, acesta începe să îi răspundă, iar între cei doi se naște treptat o legătură profundă și sinceră.
Unul dintre lucrurile care mi-au plăcut cel mai mult a fost modul în care Rebecca Ross și-a construit personajele. Iris este curajoasă, ambițioasă și vulnerabilă în același timp. Am admirat puterea cu care merge înainte, chiar și atunci când totul pare să se destrame în jurul ei. Roman, pe de altă parte, s-a dovedit a fi mult mai complex decât lasă impresia la început. Dincolo de aparența rece și distantă se ascunde un personaj sensibil, loial și extrem de atent la cei pe care îi iubește. Relația dintre ei evoluează natural și frumos, iar interacțiunile lor au fost printre momentele mele preferate din întreaga carte.
Mi-a plăcut foarte mult și felul în care autoarea a îmbinat povestea de dragoste cu realitatea dură a războiului. Pe măsură ce Iris ajunge tot mai aproape de linia frontului în încercarea de a-și găsi fratele, miza crește constant, iar pericolele devin din ce în ce mai mari. Roman și Iris sunt puși în fața unor alegeri dificile, iar fiecare decizie pare să le influențeze nu doar propriul viitor, ci și soarta celor din jur. Acțiunea nu stagnează niciodată și există permanent ceva care te face să întorci încă o pagină. Este genul de carte care te face să spui „încă un capitol”, iar înainte să îți dai seama ai citit zeci de pagini.
Lumea creată de Rebecca Ross m-a impresionat la fel de mult ca personajele. Deși este un univers fantastic, totul pare atent gândit și bine construit. Mi-a plăcut atmosfera aparte, influențele mitologice, magia discretă și numeroasele detalii care dau profunzime poveștii. Autoarea reușește să creeze imagini vii și emoții autentice, iar stilul său de scriere este elegant, fluid și foarte ușor de urmărit.
Dincolo de elementele fantasy și de romantism, „Rivali divini” este și o poveste despre speranță, pierdere, sacrificiu și puterea cuvintelor. Este despre oameni care încearcă să găsească lumină într-o lume marcată de război și despre legăturile care se formează atunci când ne așteptăm mai puțin. M-a emoționat, m-a făcut să zâmbesc și m-a ținut cu sufletul la gură până la ultima pagină.
Pentru mine, această carte a fost o surpriză minunată și una dintre cele mai memorabile lecturi fantasy din ultima perioadă. Am înțeles perfect de ce este atât de iubită de cititori și de ce este recomandată atât de des. Am adorat personajele, relația dintre ele, ritmul alert al poveștii și atenția extraordinară acordată detaliilor. Am închis cartea cu sentimentul că am trăit o aventură completă și cu o nerăbdare uriașă de a descoperi ce urmează în continuarea seriei. Dacă următoarele volume sunt la fel de bune, atunci această serie are toate șansele să devină una dintre favoritele mele.

„Divine Rivals” by Rebecca Ross was one of those books that sat on my reading list for a very long time. I kept seeing it recommended everywhere, heard nothing but praise for it, and, admittedly, my expectations were quite high. That’s exactly why I’m so happy that I finally got around to reading it, because it completely won me over from the very first pages and confirmed that it truly deserves all the success and appreciation it has received. It was a captivating read that kept me fully engaged and delivered exactly the blend of emotion, romance, action, and magic that I look for in a well-written fantasy novel.
The story takes place in a world on the brink of destruction, where the gods, after centuries of silence, have resumed their war against one another, leaving humanity caught in the middle of a devastating conflict. At the heart of the story is Iris Winnow, an eighteen-year-old girl struggling to keep her family together during an incredibly difficult time. Her mother is battling her own addictions, while her brother has disappeared after being sent to the front lines. Determined to change her life and help her family, Iris works tirelessly to earn a promotion at the Oath Gazette, where she works as a journalist.
At work, she meets Roman Kitt, her main rival. Roman seems to have everything: talent, confidence, and an attitude that constantly irritates Iris. Their rivalry is evident from the very beginning and creates many tense yet charming moments throughout the story. However, what neither of them knows is that a magical connection is secretly bringing them together. Iris regularly writes letters to her missing brother and slips them beneath the door of an enchanted wardrobe. Mysteriously, those letters never reach their intended recipient. Instead, they end up in Roman’s hands. Protected by anonymity, he begins writing back, and a deep and genuine bond gradually forms between them.
One of the things I loved most was the way Rebecca Ross crafted her characters. Iris is brave, ambitious, and vulnerable all at once. I admired her determination to keep moving forward even when everything around her seemed to be falling apart. Roman, on the other hand, turned out to be far more complex than he initially appeared. Beneath his cold and distant exterior lies a sensitive, loyal, and deeply caring person. Their relationship develops naturally and beautifully, and their interactions were among my favorite moments in the entire book.
I also really appreciated how the author balanced the romance with the harsh realities of war. As Iris gets closer to the front lines in her search for her brother, the stakes continue to rise and the dangers become increasingly severe. Both Iris and Roman are forced to make difficult choices, and every decision seems capable of affecting not only their own futures but also the lives of those around them. The plot never loses momentum, and there is always something compelling enough to make you turn just one more page. It’s exactly the kind of book that makes you say, “just one more chapter,” only to realize you’ve read dozens of pages before you know it.
The world Rebecca Ross created impressed me just as much as the characters did. Although it is a fantasy setting, everything feels thoughtfully designed and carefully developed. I loved the unique atmosphere, the mythological influences, the subtle magic, and the countless details that add depth to the story. Ross creates vivid imagery and genuine emotion, while her writing style is elegant, fluid, and incredibly easy to follow.
Beyond its fantasy elements and romance, „Divine Rivals” is also a story about hope, loss, sacrifice, and the power of words. It is about people trying to find light in a world scarred by war and about the connections that form when we least expect them. It moved me, made me smile, and kept me on the edge of my seat until the very last page.
For me, this book was a wonderful surprise and one of the most memorable fantasy reads I’ve experienced in recent years. I completely understand why it is so beloved by readers and why it is recommended so often. I adored the characters, their relationship, the fast-paced plot, and the extraordinary attention to detail. I closed the book feeling as though I had experienced a complete adventure and with immense excitement to discover what happens next in the series. If the following books are just as good, then this series has every chance of becoming one of my all-time favorites.
