„Scythe & Sparrow” este al treilea și ultimul volum din „Trilogia Ruinous Love”, seria scrisă de Brynne Weaver, după „Butcher & Blackbird” și „Leather & Lark”. Eu am ajuns la această carte cu ceva ezitare, pentru că amânasem destul de mult să o citesc. Recunosc că al doilea volum al seriei nu m-a convins la fel de mult și am avut nevoie de o pauză înainte să mă întorc în universul creat de autoare. Totuși, mă bucur că am făcut-o, pentru că „Scythe & Sparrow” mi-a plăcut mai mult decât mă așteptam.
De data aceasta îi cunoaștem pe Fionn Kane și Rose Evans, doi oameni care, la prima vedere, nu par să aibă foarte multe în comun. Fionn este un medic chirurg care încearcă să se rupă de viața pe care a avut-o în Boston după ce trece printr-o perioadă dificilă și rămâne cu inima frântă. Se retrage într-un orășel din Nebraska, sperând să ducă o viață liniștită, departe de complicații, relații și tot haosul din trecut. Doar că liniștea pe care o caută nu durează prea mult.
Rose este exact opusul acestei idei de viață liniștită. Este artistă motociclistă și face parte de ani buni din Circul Silveria, fiind obișnuită cu drumurile, spectacolele și libertatea. Pe lângă viața de circ, Rose are și o latură ceva mai… criminală, ceea ce se potrivește perfect cu lumea neobișnuită a seriei. După ce un plan nu merge tocmai cum și-ar fi dorit și își rupe piciorul, ea este nevoită să rămână în Nebraska și ajunge să locuiască, în mod destul de ironic, în casa lui Fionn.
Mi-a plăcut foarte mult felul în care sunt construite cele două personaje și, mai ales, contrastul dintre personalitățile lor. Fionn este mai timid, mai cerebral și pare să aibă nevoie de puțină ordine în viața lui, în timp ce Rose este impulsivă, curajoasă și obișnuită să facă lucrurile în felul ei. Tocmai diferențele dintre ei fac ca interacțiunile să fie atât de amuzante. Chimia dintre personaje mi s-a părut unul dintre cele mai bune aspecte ale cărții și am savurat în special momentele în care tensiunea dintre ei devine din ce în ce mai evidentă.
Relația lor pornește într-un mod destul de complicat și, bineînțeles, lucrurile nu rămân doar la nivel de prietenie. Avem parte de atracție, multă tensiune și destule scene spicy, dar mi-a plăcut că acestea sunt însoțite de conversații și momente care ne ajută să îi înțelegem mai bine. Fionn și Rose nu sunt doar două personaje puse împreună pentru a crea o poveste de dragoste, ci fiecare vine cu propriile probleme, temeri și răni. Pe măsură ce petrec mai mult timp împreună, încep să se apropie într-un mod care îi obligă să se confrunte și cu lucrurile de care au încercat să fugă.
Și pentru că vorbim despre Brynne Weaver, evident că povestea nu putea fi una romantică obișnuită. Avem crime, situații absurde, mult haos și momente care reușesc să fie în același timp întunecate și amuzante. Combinația dintre dark romance și umorul negru mi se pare în continuare unul dintre lucrurile care fac seria atât de apreciată. Sunt scene la care probabil nu ar trebui să râzi, dar ajungi să zâmbești tocmai pentru că sunt atât de exagerate și neașteptate.
Un alt lucru care mi-a făcut plăcere a fost faptul că apar și personajele pe care le-am întâlnit în primele două volume. Mi-a plăcut să îi revăd și să simt că această ultimă poveste chiar face parte din aceeași lume, nu este pur și simplu o poveste separată cu alte personaje. Aparițiile lor aduc și câteva momente amuzante și au făcut finalul seriei să se simtă mai complet.
Per total, „Scythe & Sparrow” este genul de carte pe care am citit-o foarte ușor. Nu este o poveste pe care am ales-o pentru complexitatea intrigii, ci pentru personaje, dinamica dintre ele și felul în care autoarea combină romantismul cu crimele și umorul negru. Ritmul este bun, capitolele merg repede, iar interacțiunile dintre Fionn și Rose m-au făcut să vreau să mai citesc încă un capitol, până când m-am trezit că am înaintat foarte mult în poveste.
Pentru mine, a fost o lectură perfectă pentru momentele în care aveam nevoie să mă desprind puțin de problemele de zi cu zi. Este una dintre acele cărți pe care le citești pentru că vrei să te relaxezi, să te distrezi și să intri într-o poveste complet diferită de realitate. Am avut destule momente în care am zâmbit în timp ce citeam, iar combinația dintre umorul negru, situațiile haotice și scenele spicy face cartea foarte ușor de parcurs.
Nu cred că „Scythe & Sparrow” este o carte pentru toată lumea și nici nu aș spune că povestea este perfectă. Unele situații sunt intenționat exagerate, iar stilul seriei trebuie să fie pe placul tău ca să te poți bucura cu adevărat de ea. Pentru mine, însă, a funcționat mult mai bine decât volumul al doilea și mi-a oferit exact genul de lectură distractivă și ușoară de care aveam nevoie.
În concluzie, îi acord 4 stele. Mi-au plăcut personajele, chimia dintre Fionn și Rose, umorul negru, momentele spicy și faptul că am avut ocazia să mă reîntâlnesc cu personajele din volumele anterioare. Dacă îți plac dark romance-urile care nu se iau prea în serios, cu multă nebunie, crime, situații absurde și o poveste de dragoste condimentată, cred că „Scythe & Sparrow” poate fi o lectură foarte distractivă. Pentru mine, a fost o surpriză plăcută după dezamăgirea pe care mi-o lăsase volumul anterior și mă bucur că nu am renunțat la serie.
Scythe & Sparrow – Brynne Weaver (The Ruinous Love Trilogy, #3)
“Scythe & Sparrow” is the third and final book in the “Ruinous Love Trilogy,” written by Brynne Weaver, following “Butcher & Blackbird” and “Leather & Lark.” I went into this book with some hesitation because I had put off reading it for quite a while. I’ll admit that the second book in the series didn’t convince me as much, and I needed a bit of a break before returning to the world created by the author. Still, I’m glad I did, because I ended up enjoying “Scythe & Sparrow” much more than I expected.
This time, we meet Fionn Kane and Rose Evans, two people who, at first glance, don’t seem to have much in common. Fionn is a surgeon who is trying to distance himself from the life he had in Boston after going through a difficult period and having his heart broken. He retreats to a small town in Nebraska, hoping to live a quiet life, far away from complications, relationships, and all the chaos of his past. Unfortunately, the peace he’s looking for doesn’t last very long.
Rose is the complete opposite of this idea of a quiet life. She is a motorcycle stunt performer and has been part of the Silveria Circus for years, so she’s used to traveling, performing, and living freely. On top of her circus life, Rose also has a somewhat more… criminal side, which fits perfectly into the unusual world of this series. After a plan doesn’t go quite the way she intended and she breaks her leg, she is forced to stay in Nebraska and, rather ironically, ends up living in Fionn’s house.
I really enjoyed the way these two characters were written and, especially, the contrast between their personalities. Fionn is more reserved, more cerebral, and seems to need a little bit of order in his life, while Rose is impulsive, fearless, and used to doing things her own way. Their differences are exactly what make their interactions so entertaining. The chemistry between them was one of my favorite aspects of the book, and I especially enjoyed the moments when the tension between them became more and more obvious.
Their relationship starts off in a rather complicated way and, of course, things don’t stay at the level of friendship. There is attraction, plenty of tension, and quite a few spicy scenes, but I liked that these were accompanied by conversations and moments that helped us understand them better. Fionn and Rose aren’t just two characters thrown together to create a love story; they both come with their own problems, fears, and emotional wounds. As they spend more time together, they begin to grow closer in a way that forces them to confront the things they have been trying to run away from.
And because we’re talking about Brynne Weaver, obviously the story couldn’t be a typical romance. We get murders, absurd situations, plenty of chaos, and moments that somehow manage to be both dark and funny. The combination of dark romance and black humor is still one of the things that makes this series so entertaining. There are scenes you probably shouldn’t be laughing at, but you end up smiling simply because they are so over-the-top and unexpected.
Another thing I really enjoyed was seeing some of the characters we met in the first two books. I loved seeing them again and feeling like this final story truly belongs to the same world, rather than simply being a separate story with different characters. Their appearances also bring some funny moments and made the ending of the series feel more complete.
Overall, “Scythe & Sparrow” is the kind of book that I found very easy to read. It’s not a story I picked up for the complexity of its plot, but for the characters, their dynamic, and the way the author combines romance with murder and dark humor. The pacing is good, the chapters fly by, and the interactions between Fionn and Rose made me want to read just one more chapter, until I suddenly realized I had made it quite far into the story.
For me, this was the perfect read for those moments when I needed to disconnect a little from my everyday problems. It’s one of those books you read because you want to relax, have fun, and escape into a story that feels completely different from reality. There were plenty of moments when I found myself smiling while reading, and the combination of dark humor, chaotic situations, and spicy scenes makes the book very easy to breeze through.
I don’t think “Scythe & Sparrow” is a book for everyone, and I wouldn’t say the story is perfect either. Some situations are intentionally exaggerated, and the style of the series has to be your kind of thing for you to truly enjoy it. For me, though, it worked much better than the second book and gave me exactly the kind of fun, easy read I needed.
In conclusion, I’m giving it 4 stars. I loved the characters, the chemistry between Fionn and Rose, the dark humor, the spicy moments, and getting the chance to reconnect with the characters from the previous books. If you enjoy dark romances that don’t take themselves too seriously, with plenty of madness, murders, absurd situations, and a spicy love story, I think “Scythe & Sparrow” can be a really entertaining read. For me, it was a pleasant surprise after the disappointment I felt with the previous book, and I’m glad I didn’t give up on the series.
