„Talentatul domn Ripley” de Patricia Highsmith a fost o carte care mi-a plăcut destul de mult și care m-a surprins mai ales prin personajul principal. Este genul de roman în care nu avem un protagonist pe care să îl putem considera bun în sensul clasic, iar tocmai acest lucru mi s-a părut interesant. Highsmith reușește să ne apropie foarte mult de mintea lui Tom Ripley și, deși știm că face lucruri greșite, ajungem să îi urmărim cu atenție planurile și să ne întrebăm dacă va reuși să scape. Cred că aceasta este una dintre cele mai interesante părți ale romanului: ajungi să înțelegi logica personajului, chiar dacă nu ești de acord cu alegerile lui.
Tom Ripley este un tânăr care a avut o copilărie dificilă, marcată de moartea părinților și de relația neplăcută cu mătușa sa, care îl tratează cu umilință. Ajuns adult, Tom trăiește în New York și se descurcă prin tot felul de mici înșelătorii și fraude, folosindu-se uneori de identități false. Viața lui se schimbă atunci când Herbert Greenleaf, un om bogat, îi propune să plece în Italia pentru a-l convinge pe fiul său, Dickie, să se întoarcă acasă. Tom acceptă imediat și pleacă spre Europa, fără să știe însă până unde îl va duce această călătorie.
Odată ajuns în Italia, Tom îl întâlnește pe Dickie și devine foarte fascinat de el și de stilul său de viață. Dickie este exact genul de persoană care Tom și-ar dori să fie: bogat, liber, sigur pe el și înconjurat de lucruri frumoase. Tom începe să petreacă tot mai mult timp cu el și cu Marge, prietena lui Dickie, iar ceea ce la început pare doar o admirație se transformă treptat într-o obsesie. Își dorește nu doar să fie apropiat de Dickie, ci să aibă viața lui, identitatea lui și, într-un fel, să devină el. De aici, povestea începe să meargă într-o direcție din ce în ce mai întunecată, iar lucrurile ajung să scape de sub control.
Personajul care m-a impresionat cel mai mult a fost, fără îndoială, Tom Ripley. Cel mai mult m-a surprins cât de ingenios poate fi și cât de repede reușește să se adapteze atunci când apare o problemă. Tom nu acționează pur și simplu din impuls. De cele mai multe ori, își imaginează dinainte ce s-ar putea întâmpla, își pregătește răspunsurile și se gândește la diferite variante prin care ar putea ieși dintr-o situație complicată. Mi s-a părut fascinant felul în care își construiește în minte tot felul de scenarii înainte să fie pus în fața unei întrebări dificile. Practic, încearcă mereu să fie cu un pas înaintea celorlalți.
Un alt lucru care m-a surprins a fost talentul lui Ripley de a interpreta diferite roluri. Reușește să îi convingă pe cei din jur că este altcineva și ajunge chiar să se prezinte drept Dickie. Mi s-a părut incredibil cât de bine poate susține această minciună și cât de atent este la fiecare detaliu. Chiar și atunci când apar polițiști sau alte persoane care încep să pună întrebări, Tom încearcă să aibă pregătit un răspuns și să nu lase nimic la întâmplare. Tocmai această parte a poveștii m-a făcut să citesc cu interes, pentru că eram mereu curioasă să văd cât timp va putea continua să păcălească oamenii din jurul lui și dacă cineva își va da seama ce se întâmplă cu adevărat.
Mi s-au părut bine construite și celelalte personaje. Dickie este important nu doar pentru că reprezintă persoana pe care Tom vrea să o imite, ci și pentru că relația dintre cei doi se schimbă pe parcursul romanului. Marge, la rândul ei, observă lucruri pe care ceilalți par să le ignore și contribuie la tensiunea poveștii. Herbert Greenleaf este cel care, fără să își dea seama, îl trimite pe Tom în Italia și pornește practic întregul șir de evenimente. Personajele au personalități diferite și relațiile dintre ele se schimbă pe măsură ce povestea avansează, ceea ce face ca acțiunea să pară naturală.
Mi-a plăcut și atmosfera romanului. Italia este prezentată prin locuri frumoase, vile, orașe de coastă și o viață aparent lipsită de griji, însă în spatele acestui decor elegant se ascunde mereu ceva neliniștitor. Contrastul dintre frumusețea locurilor și lucrurile pe care le face Tom mi s-a părut foarte reușit. Ai impresia că personajele trăiesc într-o vacanță perfectă, dar în același timp simți că ceva nu este în regulă și că pericolul se apropie.
Cred că unul dintre cele mai interesante aspecte ale cărții este faptul că Patricia Highsmith ne face să urmărim povestea din perspectiva lui Tom și să intrăm foarte mult în modul lui de gândire. Ajungi să fii atent la planurile lui, la minciunile pe care le spune și la metodele prin care încearcă să evite să fie descoperit. Nu înseamnă că ajungi să îi aprobi comportamentul, ci mai degrabă că romanul te face să înțelegi cum funcționează mintea lui și de ce fiecare situație devine pentru el un nou puzzle pe care trebuie să îl rezolve. Mi s-a părut foarte bine făcut acest lucru și cred că de aici vine o mare parte din tensiunea cărții.
În ceea ce privește ritmul, mi s-a părut că acțiunea curge destul de natural. Sunt momente mai liniștite, în care aflăm mai multe despre personaje și despre viața lor, dar și momente în care tensiunea crește și te face să vrei să vezi ce se va întâmpla mai departe. Pe mine m-a făcut să continui lectura mai ales curiozitatea de a vedea până unde poate merge Tom cu toate identitățile și planurile sale și cât de mult timp va putea să țină totul sub control.
Per total, „Talentatul domn Ripley” mi s-a părut un thriller psihologic foarte interesant, cu un personaj principal memorabil și o poveste care te ține atent la fiecare detaliu. Nu pot spune că a fost o carte perfectă pentru mine, de aici și cele patru stele, însă cu siguranță mi-a oferit o lectură captivantă și un personaj despre care am rămas curioasă și după ce am terminat cartea. Mi se pare că romanul deschide foarte bine seria dedicată lui Ripley și sunt curioasă să văd prin ce situații și aventuri va mai trece în cărțile următoare. Dacă vă plac poveștile despre personaje complexe, identități false, manipulare și planuri care se complică tot mai mult, cred că merită să îi dați o șansă.

„The Talented Mr. Ripley” by Patricia Highsmith was a book I enjoyed quite a lot and one that surprised me, especially because of its main character. It is the kind of novel in which we do not have a protagonist whom we can consider good in the traditional sense, and I found this particularly interesting. Highsmith manages to bring us very close to Tom Ripley’s mind and, even though we know that he is doing terrible things, we still find ourselves closely following his plans and wondering whether he will manage to get away with them. I think this is one of the most interesting aspects of the novel: you end up understanding the character’s logic, even if you do not agree with his choices.
Tom Ripley is a young man who had a difficult childhood, marked by the death of his parents and by his unpleasant relationship with his aunt, who treats him with humiliation. As an adult, Tom lives in New York and gets by through various small scams and frauds, sometimes using false identities. His life changes when Herbert Greenleaf, a wealthy man, offers him a trip to Italy to convince his son, Dickie, to return home. Tom immediately accepts and leaves for Europe, without knowing just how far this journey will take him.
Once he arrives in Italy, Tom meets Dickie and becomes fascinated by him and by his lifestyle. Dickie is exactly the kind of person Tom would like to be: wealthy, free, confident, and surrounded by beautiful things. Tom starts spending more and more time with him and with Marge, Dickie’s girlfriend, and what initially seems like simple admiration gradually turns into an obsession. He does not just want to be close to Dickie; he wants to have his life, his identity, and, in a way, to become him. From this point on, the story begins to take a darker and darker turn, and things eventually spiral out of control.
The character who impressed me the most was, without a doubt, Tom Ripley. What surprised me most was how resourceful he can be and how quickly he manages to adapt whenever a problem arises. Tom does not simply act on impulse. Most of the time, he imagines what might happen beforehand, prepares his answers, and thinks about different ways in which he could get out of a difficult situation. I found it fascinating how he creates all kinds of scenarios in his mind before he is faced with a difficult question. Basically, he is always trying to stay one step ahead of everyone else.
Another thing that surprised me was Ripley’s talent for playing different roles. He manages to convince the people around him that he is someone else and even goes as far as presenting himself as Dickie. I found it incredible how well he is able to maintain this lie and how attentive he is to every detail. Even when the police or other people begin asking questions, Tom tries to have an answer ready and not leave anything to chance. This part of the story kept me especially interested because I was always curious to see how long he would be able to keep fooling the people around him and whether anyone would eventually figure out what was really happening.
I also thought the other characters were well developed. Dickie is important not only because he represents the person Tom wants to imitate, but also because the relationship between the two changes throughout the novel. Marge, in turn, notices things that the others seem to ignore and contributes to the tension of the story. Herbert Greenleaf is the person who, without realizing it, sends Tom to Italy and essentially sets the whole chain of events in motion. The characters have different personalities, and their relationships change as the story progresses, which makes the plot feel natural.
I also enjoyed the atmosphere of the novel. Italy is portrayed through beautiful locations, villas, coastal towns, and an apparently carefree lifestyle, but behind this elegant setting there is always something unsettling. I thought the contrast between the beauty of these places and the things Tom does was very effective. You get the impression that the characters are living a perfect vacation, but at the same time you can feel that something is not right and that danger is getting closer.
I think one of the most interesting aspects of the book is the fact that Patricia Highsmith makes us follow the story from Tom’s perspective and draws us deeply into the way he thinks. You become invested in his plans, the lies he tells, and the methods he uses to avoid being discovered. This does not mean that you come to approve of his behavior, but rather that the novel allows you to understand how his mind works and why every situation becomes a new puzzle that he has to solve. I thought this was handled very well, and I believe this is where much of the book’s tension comes from.
As for the pacing, I thought the story flowed quite naturally. There are quieter moments when we learn more about the characters and their lives, but there are also moments when the tension builds and makes you want to find out what will happen next. What kept me reading was mainly my curiosity about how far Tom could go with all his identities and plans and how long he would be able to keep everything under control.
Overall, „The Talented Mr. Ripley” struck me as a very interesting psychological thriller, with a memorable main character and a story that keeps you paying attention to every detail. I cannot say that it was a perfect book for me, hence the four stars, but it certainly provided me with a captivating reading experience and a character I remained curious about even after finishing the book. I think the novel is a great way to begin the series featuring Ripley, and I am curious to see what situations and adventures he will encounter in the books that follow. If you enjoy stories about complex characters, false identities, manipulation, and plans that become increasingly complicated, I think this book is definitely worth giving a chance.
