„Povestea asta îți poate salva viața” de Tiffany Crum a fost una dintre acele cărți care m-au făcut să spun mai citesc doar câteva pagini, pentru ca apoi să-mi dau seama că am ajuns mult mai departe decât îmi propusesem. Mi-a plăcut destul de mult această lectură și, sincer, m-a prins încă de la început. Are o combinație foarte plăcută de romance și thriller, două genuri care funcționează surprinzător de bine împreună aici. Dacă vă plac poveștile de dragoste în care lucrurile nu sunt niciodată atât de simple pe cât par, dar și misterele în care trebuie să fii atent la fiecare detaliu, cred că veți găsi destule motive să vă placă această carte.
Povestea îi are în centru pe Benny Abbott și Joy Moore, doi prieteni foarte apropiați care au reușit să transforme pasiunea lor pentru poveștile despre supraviețuire într-un podcast extrem de popular. Cei doi discută cu umor despre situații periculoase și neobișnuite, iar succesul podcastului le-a schimbat complet viețile. În spatele acestui proiect se află și Xander, soțul lui Joy, care contribuie la transformarea podcastului într-o adevărată afacere. La prima vedere, Benny și Joy par să aibă exact genul de viață pe care mulți și-ar dori-o: succes, bani, popularitate și o prietenie care pare de neclintit. Dar, pe măsură ce povestea avansează, devine tot mai clar că imaginea pe care o prezintă lumii ascunde mult mai multe lucruri.
Totul se schimbă atunci când Benny ajunge acasă la Joy și Xander și descoperă că cei doi au dispărut. Situația devine și mai suspectă când observă urmele rămase în urmă, printre care și cioburi de sticlă. Nu știe ce s-a întâmplat, unde au plecat sau dacă dispariția lor a fost voluntară. În loc să primească răspunsuri, Benny se trezește în mijlocul unui mister din ce în ce mai complicat. Singurul lucru care îl poate ajuta să înțeleagă situația este un manuscris incomplet la care Joy lucra. Iar ceea ce descoperă acolo începe să schimbe complet imaginea pe care o avea despre prietena lui.
Mi-a plăcut foarte mult ideea că oamenii pe care îi urmărim și îi ascultăm zilnic prin intermediul unui podcast pot părea extrem de familiari, deși, în realitate, nu știm aproape nimic despre ei. Benny și Joy sunt cunoscuți de milioane de oameni, iar ascultătorii lor au impresia că le cunosc personalitățile și poveștile. Cartea se joacă foarte bine cu această idee și ne arată diferența dintre imaginea publică și omul adevărat din spatele ei. Cu cât aflăm mai multe despre personaje, cu atât devine mai greu să avem încredere în ele.
Un alt lucru care mi-a plăcut a fost faptul că povestea este prezentată din perspectiva mai multor personaje. Schimbarea perspectivelor mi s-a părut potrivită pentru un thriller de acest gen, pentru că ne oferă acces la mai multe versiuni ale aceleiași situații. În același timp, autoarea reușește să creeze permanent senzația că fiecare personaj ascunde ceva. Ajungi să suspectezi pe rând aproape pe toată lumea și să te întrebi cine spune adevărul și cine încearcă să ascundă anumite lucruri. Chiar și atunci când crezi că ai înțeles situația, apare câte un detaliu care te face să-ți pui din nou întrebările.
Personajele mi s-au părut, de asemenea, ușor de urmărit. Nu am avut senzația că sunt aruncate toate în poveste deodată și că trebuie să țin minte o mulțime de nume. Ele sunt introduse treptat, iar fiecare primește suficient spațiu pentru a putea înțelege cine este, ce relație are cu ceilalți și ce rol ar putea avea în poveste. Descrierile lor sunt destul de ample încât să le poți diferenția ușor, iar pe măsură ce îi cunoști mai bine începi să observi și lucrurile care nu se potrivesc cu imaginea lor inițială.
Benny mi s-a părut un personaj important tocmai pentru că este pus într-o situație în care trebuie să regândească tot ceea ce credea că știe despre Joy. Dispariția prietenei sale îl obligă să caute răspunsuri, dar această căutare vine la pachet cu tot mai multe îndoieli. Relația dintre Benny și Joy este una dintre componentele care dau greutate poveștii, pentru că nu vorbim doar despre rezolvarea unui mister, ci și despre ce se întâmplă atunci când descoperi că poate nu ai cunoscut niciodată cu adevărat o persoană foarte apropiată.
Joy, pe de altă parte, este probabil personajul în jurul căruia se construiește cea mai mare parte a misterului. Imaginea ei publică este una, însă manuscrisul și lucrurile pe care le aflăm treptat ne oferă o perspectivă diferită asupra ei. Tocmai această diferență dintre ceea ce arată lumii și ceea ce păstrează pentru ea însăși m-a făcut să fiu atentă la fiecare informație nouă. Iar Xander, soțul ei, completează această zonă complicată a poveștii, pentru că relația lor ridică la rândul ei întrebări și lasă loc pentru numeroase presupuneri.
Nu aș spune că avem parte de o acțiune extrem de alertă, cu răsturnări spectaculoase la fiecare câteva pagini. Ritmul este mai degrabă unul constant, dar cred că tocmai așa funcționează bine cartea. Misterul este prezent aproape permanent, iar senzația că există ceva ascuns în spatele fiecărei conversații sau al fiecărui personaj te face să continui lectura. Chiar și atunci când acțiunea încetinește puțin, apare suficientă curiozitate încât să vrei să afli ce urmează. Pentru mine, acesta a fost unul dintre motivele pentru care am citit cartea foarte repede.
Mi-a plăcut și felul în care combinația dintre romance și thriller nu pare forțată. Partea romantică adaugă o dimensiune mai personală poveștii și ne ajută să înțelegem mai bine anumite relații dintre personaje, în timp ce componenta de thriller menține tensiunea și întrebările. Nu este o poveste de dragoste simplă, liniștită, ci una în care relațiile sunt influențate de secrete, neîncredere și lucruri nespuse. Tocmai de aceea cred că această carte poate fi o alegere bună atât pentru cititorii de romance, cât și pentru cei care preferă misterele.
Pentru mine, cel mai interesant aspect a fost senzația constantă că trebuie să mă răzgândesc în privința personajelor. De fiecare dată când aveam impresia că am identificat persoana în care nu ar trebui să am încredere, apărea ceva care îmi schimba teoria. Cartea te face să privești personajele cu suspiciune și să te întrebi cât de bine poți cunoaște, de fapt, un om. Iar faptul că acțiunea pornește de la dispariția a două persoane care, pentru public, par să aibă o viață aproape perfectă face misterul și mai interesant.
Per total, „Povestea asta îți poate salva viața” a fost pentru mine o lectură foarte plăcută. Mi-a plăcut încă de la primele pagini, am fost curioasă să văd unde duce povestea și mi-a plăcut faptul că autoarea a reușit să păstreze misterul pe tot parcursul cărții. Nu este neapărat genul de thriller în care se întâmplă ceva spectaculos la fiecare capitol, însă are acea tensiune discretă care te face să mai citești încă un capitol, pentru că vrei să afli adevărul.
Recomand cartea în special celor care iubesc poveștile cu secrete, personaje greu de descifrat, relații complicate și mistere care te fac să-ți schimbi constant teoriile. Pentru mine, combinația dintre romance și thriller a funcționat foarte bine, iar faptul că povestea este spusă prin mai multe perspective a făcut-o și mai interesantă. Este o carte care m-a prins, m-a făcut să suspectez aproape pe toată lumea și, cel mai important, mi-a păstrat curiozitatea până la final. Din partea mea, merită fără probleme 5 stele.

“This Story Might Save Your Life” by Tiffany Crum was one of those books that made me say I’ll just read a few more pages, only to realize that I had gotten much further than I had planned. I really enjoyed this read and, honestly, it hooked me from the very beginning. It has a very enjoyable combination of romance and thriller, two genres that work surprisingly well together here. If you enjoy love stories where things are never as simple as they seem, but also mysteries where you have to pay attention to every detail, I think you’ll find plenty of reasons to enjoy this book.
The story centers around Benny Abbott and Joy Moore, two very close friends who have managed to turn their passion for survival stories into an extremely popular podcast. The two discuss dangerous and unusual situations with humor, and the success of the podcast has completely changed their lives. Behind the project is also Xander, Joy’s husband, who helps turn the podcast into a real business. At first glance, Benny and Joy seem to have exactly the kind of life many people would want: success, money, popularity, and a friendship that seems unbreakable. But as the story progresses, it becomes increasingly clear that the image they present to the world hides much more than it seems.
Everything changes when Benny arrives at Joy and Xander’s home and discovers that the two of them have disappeared. The situation becomes even more suspicious when he notices the traces left behind, including broken glass. He doesn’t know what happened, where they went, or whether their disappearance was voluntary. Instead of getting answers, Benny finds himself in the middle of an increasingly complicated mystery. The only thing that can help him understand the situation is an unfinished manuscript Joy had been working on. And what he discovers there begins to completely change the image he had of his friend.
I really liked the idea that the people we follow and listen to every day through a podcast can seem extremely familiar, even though, in reality, we know almost nothing about them. Benny and Joy are known by millions of people, and their listeners feel as though they know their personalities and stories personally. The book plays very well with this idea and shows us the difference between a public image and the real person behind it. The more we learn about the characters, the harder it becomes to trust them.
Another thing I enjoyed was the fact that the story is told from the perspectives of several characters. The changing perspectives felt appropriate for a thriller like this because they give us access to different versions of the same situation. At the same time, the author manages to constantly create the feeling that every character is hiding something. You end up suspecting almost everyone at one point or another and wondering who is telling the truth and who is trying to hide certain things. Even when you think you’ve figured out the situation, another detail appears and makes you question everything all over again.
The characters also felt easy to follow. I never had the feeling that they were all introduced at once and that I had to remember a huge number of names. They are introduced gradually, and each one is given enough space for us to understand who they are, what their relationship with the others is, and what role they might play in the story. Their descriptions are detailed enough to make them easy to distinguish, and as you get to know them better, you also begin to notice the things that don’t quite match their initial image.
Benny felt like an important character to me precisely because he is placed in a situation where he has to rethink everything he thought he knew about Joy. His friend’s disappearance forces him to search for answers, but that search comes with more and more doubts. The relationship between Benny and Joy is one of the elements that gives the story emotional weight because this isn’t just about solving a mystery, but also about what happens when you discover that you may have never truly known someone very close to you.
Joy, on the other hand, is probably the character around whom most of the mystery is built. Her public image is one thing, but the manuscript and the things we gradually discover give us a different perspective on her. It was precisely this difference between what she shows the world and what she keeps to herself that made me pay attention to every new piece of information. And Xander, her husband, adds another layer of complexity to the story, because their relationship raises questions of its own and leaves room for plenty of assumptions.
I wouldn’t say that the book has extremely fast-paced action, with spectacular twists every few pages. The pacing is more consistent, but I think that’s exactly what works well for this story. The mystery is present almost constantly, and the feeling that there is something hidden behind every conversation or every character makes you want to keep reading. Even when the action slows down a little, there is enough curiosity to make you want to find out what happens next. For me, this was one of the reasons why I read the book so quickly.
I also liked the way the combination of romance and thriller doesn’t feel forced. The romantic side adds a more personal dimension to the story and helps us better understand certain relationships between the characters, while the thriller element keeps the tension and questions alive. This isn’t a simple, quiet love story, but one where relationships are influenced by secrets, distrust, and unspoken things. That’s exactly why I think this book could be a good choice for both romance readers and those who prefer mysteries.
For me, the most interesting aspect was the constant feeling that I had to change my mind about the characters. Every time I thought I had identified the person I shouldn’t trust, something would happen that changed my theory. The book makes you look at the characters suspiciously and wonder how well you can actually know someone. And the fact that the story begins with the disappearance of two people who, to the public, seem to have an almost perfect life makes the mystery even more intriguing.
Overall, “This Story Might Save Your Life” was a very enjoyable read for me. I liked it from the very first pages, I was curious to see where the story would go, and I enjoyed the fact that the author managed to maintain the mystery throughout the book. It’s not necessarily the kind of thriller where something spectacular happens in every chapter, but it has that subtle tension that makes you read just one more chapter because you want to know the truth.
I especially recommend this book to readers who love stories filled with secrets, difficult-to-read characters, complicated relationships, and mysteries that constantly make you change your theories. For me, the combination of romance and thriller worked really well, and the fact that the story is told through multiple perspectives made it even more interesting. It’s a book that hooked me, made me suspect almost everyone, and, most importantly, kept me curious until the very end. From me, it easily deserves 5 stars.
