Deși „Intrusa” este unul dintre cele mai promovate thrillere ale anului, cu peste 120.000 de exemplare vândute la nivel internațional în prima lună de la apariție și o nominalizare la Goodreads Choice Awards 2025 la categoria Mystery & Thriller, pentru mine nu s-a ridicat la nivelul așteptărilor. Freida McFadden este o autoare extrem de populară, cunoscută pentru numeroasele sale thrillere psihologice traduse în zeci de limbi și pentru modul în care își folosește experiența de medic neurolog pentru a construi povești despre mintea umană. Tocmai de aceea am început această carte cu entuziasm, convinsă că mă așteaptă încă un thriller captivant.
Povestea o urmărește pe Casey, o fostă profesoară care trăiește izolată într-o cabană aflată în mijlocul pădurii. În timpul unei furtuni violente, ea descoperă lângă casa sa o adolescentă misterioasă, singură și acoperită de sânge. Fata nu pare rănită, însă comportamentul ei ridică numeroase semne de întrebare. Casey trebuie să decidă dacă îi oferă adăpost sau dacă își ascultă instinctul care îi spune că ceva nu este în regulă. Din acel moment, între cele două personaje se dezvoltă o relație tensionată, construită pe neîncredere, secrete și temeri.
Atmosfera este, fără îndoială, unul dintre punctele forte ale romanului. Furtuna, pădurea izolată și cabana aflată departe de lume creează un decor apăsător și misterios. Încă de la început, autoarea încearcă să inducă sentimentul că pericolul se ascunde la fiecare pas și că nimeni nu este ceea ce pare. Din păcate, pe măsură ce am înaintat în lectură, tensiunea inițială a început să se piardă.
Personajele nu au reușit să mă convingă. Atât Casey, cât și celelalte personaje importante mi s-au părut adesea frustrante prin deciziile pe care le iau și prin modul în care reacționează în anumite situații. În plus, conflictele dintre ele tind să se repete, iar relațiile construite pe parcursul cărții nu evoluează suficient cât să mențină interesul. De multe ori am avut impresia că citesc aceleași gânduri, aceleași temeri și aceleași discuții reluate iar și iar.
Ceea ce m-a deranjat cel mai mult au fost numeroasele repetiții. Există pasaje și informații care sunt reluate atât de des încât am avut senzația că unele capitole repetă aproape aceleași idei. Uneori, lectura mi-a dat impresia că diferite părți ale cărții au fost scrise separat și apoi reunite fără o verificare atentă a elementelor care se suprapun. Acest lucru a afectat ritmul poveștii și a făcut ca multe momente să își piardă din impact.
Dacă ar fi să compar „Intrusa” cu celelalte romane ale autoarei pe care le-am citit, acesta este, fără îndoială, cel care mi-a plăcut cel mai puțin. De la Freida McFadden mă aștept la răsturnări de situație surprinzătoare, personaje memorabile și o tensiune care să mă facă să nu pot lăsa cartea din mână. De această dată, povestea mi s-a părut mult prea repetitivă, iar misterul nu a fost suficient de puternic pentru a compensa acest lucru.
Totuși, nu pot spune că experiența a fost complet lipsită de emoție. Au existat câteva subiecte abordate care m-au impresionat sincer. Scenele care discută despre abuzul asupra copiilor, despre efectele traumelor și despre bullying au avut o încărcătură emoțională puternică și sunt probabil cele mai reușite părți ale romanului. Aceste momente au adus profunzime poveștii și m-au făcut să empatizez cu anumite personaje, chiar dacă restul construcției narative nu m-a convins.
În final, „Intrusa” a fost o lectură care a pornit cu o premisă foarte promițătoare și cu o atmosferă excelentă, dar care nu a reușit să își mențină forța pe parcurs. Repetițiile frecvente, personajele greu de simpatizat și senzația că aceeași poveste este reluată în mod constant au făcut ca romanul să fie, pentru mine, una dintre cele mai slabe apariții semnate de Freida McFadden. Cu toate acestea, câteva teme sensibile și emoționante au reușit să salveze parțial experiența de lectură, motiv pentru care i-am oferit 2 stele.
The Intruder – Freida McFadden
Although „The Intruder” is one of the most heavily promoted thrillers of the year, with over 120,000 copies sold worldwide in its first month of publication and a nomination for the 2025 Goodreads Choice Awards in the Mystery & Thriller category, it did not live up to my expectations. Freida McFadden is an extremely popular author, known for her many psychological thrillers translated into dozens of languages and for the way she draws on her experience as a neurologist to craft stories about the human mind. For that reason, I started this book with great enthusiasm, convinced that I was about to read another gripping thriller.
The story follows Casey, a former teacher who lives in isolation in a cabin deep in the woods. During a violent storm, she discovers a mysterious teenage girl near her home, alone and covered in blood. The girl does not appear to be injured, but her behavior raises numerous questions. Casey must decide whether to offer her shelter or trust her instincts, which tell her that something is not right. From that moment on, a tense relationship develops between the two characters, built on distrust, secrets, and fear.
The atmosphere is undoubtedly one of the novel’s strongest aspects. The storm, the remote forest, and the cabin far from civilization create a dark and unsettling setting. From the very beginning, the author tries to instill the feeling that danger lurks around every corner and that no one is truly who they seem. Unfortunately, as I progressed through the book, that initial tension gradually began to fade.
The characters failed to convince me. Both Casey and the other major characters often felt frustrating because of the decisions they make and the way they react in certain situations. In addition, the conflicts between them tend to repeat themselves, and the relationships developed throughout the story do not evolve enough to keep the reader engaged. Many times, I felt as though I was reading the same thoughts, the same fears, and the same conversations over and over again.
What bothered me most were the numerous repetitions. Certain passages and pieces of information are repeated so often that I sometimes felt entire chapters were revisiting nearly identical ideas. At times, the reading experience gave me the impression that different sections of the book had been written separately and later combined without carefully checking for overlapping content. This affected the pacing of the story and caused many moments to lose their impact.
If I were to compare „The Intruder” with the other novels by this author that I have read, this is undoubtedly the one I enjoyed the least. From Freida McFadden, I expect shocking twists, memorable characters, and a level of suspense that makes it impossible to put the book down. This time, however, the story felt far too repetitive, and the mystery was not strong enough to make up for it.
That said, I cannot say the experience was completely devoid of emotional impact. There were several topics explored in the novel that genuinely moved me. The scenes dealing with child abuse, the lasting effects of trauma, and bullying carried significant emotional weight and were probably the strongest parts of the book. These moments added depth to the story and made me empathize with certain characters, even if the rest of the narrative structure failed to convince me.
In the end, „The Intruder” was a novel that began with a very promising premise and an excellent atmosphere but failed to maintain its momentum throughout. The frequent repetition, the difficult-to-like characters, and the feeling that the same story was being told repeatedly made it, in my opinion, one of Freida McFadden’s weakest releases. Nevertheless, a few sensitive and emotionally powerful themes partially redeemed the reading experience, which is why I ultimately gave it 2 stars.
