Alice Feeney este una dintre autoarele mele preferate atunci când vine vorba de thrillere psihologice. Îmi place foarte mult felul în care își construiește poveștile și cum reușește să mă facă să mă îndoiesc constant de tot ce citesc. Are un stil aparte de a ascunde adevărul printre detalii aparent banale, de a induce cititorul în eroare și de a transforma fiecare personaj într-un posibil suspect. Exact acest lucru l-am simțit și în „Defecte perfecte”, un thriller întunecat și tensionat despre iubire, secrete, căsnicie și răzbunare.
Povestea îl are în centru pe Grady Green, un scriitor care trece prin cea mai grea perioadă din viața lui. În timp ce își sună soția, Abby, pentru a-i da o veste importantă, conversația se transformă într-un moment de coșmar. El o aude frânând brusc, apoi liniște totală. Când găsește mașina ei abandonată lângă marginea unei stânci, totul pare desprins dintr-un film: farurile încă aprinse, portiera deschisă, telefonul rămas în mașină… dar Abby dispăruse fără urmă. De aici începe un mister care devine tot mai apăsător cu fiecare capitol.
La un an după dispariția soției sale, Grady este încă distrus de durere și obsedat de ideea de a afla adevărul. Neputând să scrie și incapabil să își continue viața normal, decide să plece pe o insulă izolată din Scoția, sperând că liniștea acelui loc îl va ajuta să își pună ordine în gânduri. Atmosfera de pe insulă mi s-a părut unul dintre cele mai reușite aspecte ale cărții. Totul este rece, ciudat și neliniștitor, iar oamenii de acolo par că ascund mereu ceva. Alice Feeney știe foarte bine cum să creeze acel sentiment că pericolul pândește la fiecare pas.
Lucrurile devin și mai stranii în momentul în care Grady vede o femeie care seamănă perfect cu Abby. Din acel moment, povestea devine și mai captivantă, iar granița dintre adevăr și minciună începe să dispară. Mi-a plăcut mult cum autoarea a construit misterul și cum fiecare informație nouă schimba complet perspectiva asupra personajelor. Nimeni nu pare sincer până la capăt, iar exact acest lucru m-a făcut să rămân prinsă în poveste pe tot parcursul lecturii.
Personajele au fost foarte bine conturate și învăluite într-un aer permanent de mister. Grady este genul de personaj pe care nu știi dacă să îl compătimești sau să îl suspectezi, iar Abby rămâne o enigmă aproape până la final. Relația dintre ei este complicată, plină de tensiuni și secrete, iar cartea explorează foarte bine ideea că într-o căsnicie oamenii nu sunt niciodată exact ceea ce par. Mi-a plăcut și modul în care autoarea vorbește despre schimbare și despre felul în care timpul poate transforma complet o relație.
Cartea m-a ținut constant în suspans și am citit-o foarte repede pentru că simțeam mereu nevoia să aflu ce urmează. Atmosfera întunecată, răsturnările de situație și nesiguranța continuă au făcut lectura foarte captivantă. Totuși, chiar dacă mi-a plăcut destul de mult, am simțit că îi lipsește acel ceva care să o transforme într-o carte memorabilă pentru mine. Finalul nu a avut impactul la care mă așteptam și cred că speram la un mister mai profund sau la o concluzie diferită. Poate că mi-am imaginat eu altă direcție pentru poveste, iar din cauza asta ultimile revelații nu m-au surprins atât de tare pe cât speram.
Chiar și așa, „Defecte perfecte” rămâne un thriller foarte bun, tensionat și ușor de devorat, mai ales pentru cei care iubesc poveștile pline de secrete și manipulare. Alice Feeney demonstrează încă o dată că știe perfect cum să își țină cititorii în priză și cum să îi facă să pună la îndoială fiecare detaliu până la ultima pagină.

Alice Feeney is one of my favorite authors when it comes to psychological thrillers. I really love the way she builds her stories and how she constantly makes me question everything I read. She has a unique talent for hiding the truth among seemingly ordinary details, misleading the reader, and turning every character into a possible suspect. That is exactly what I felt in „Beautiful Ugly”, a dark and tense thriller about love, secrets, marriage, and revenge.
The story centers around Grady Green, a writer going through the hardest period of his life. While calling his wife, Abby, to share some important news, the conversation suddenly turns into a nightmare. He hears her slam on the brakes, followed by complete silence. When he finds her car abandoned near the edge of a cliff, everything feels like something out of a movie: the headlights still on, the driver’s door open, the phone left inside the car… but Abby has vanished without a trace. From that moment on, a mystery begins that grows heavier and more unsettling with every chapter.
A year after his wife’s disappearance, Grady is still devastated by grief and obsessed with finding the truth. Unable to write and incapable of moving on with his life, he decides to travel to a remote island in Scotland, hoping the isolation will help him put his thoughts in order. The atmosphere on the island was one of the strongest aspects of the book for me. Everything feels cold, strange, and deeply unsettling, and the people there always seem to be hiding something. Alice Feeney knows exactly how to create that feeling that danger is lurking around every corner.
Things become even stranger when Grady sees a woman who looks exactly like Abby. From that moment on, the story becomes even more gripping, and the line between truth and lies starts to disappear. I really enjoyed the way the author built the mystery and how every new piece of information completely changed my perspective on the characters. No one seems entirely honest, and that is exactly what kept me hooked throughout the entire book.
The characters were very well developed and surrounded by a constant air of mystery. Grady is the kind of character you do not know whether to pity or suspect, while Abby remains an enigma almost until the very end. Their relationship is complicated, full of tension and secrets, and the book explores very well the idea that, in a marriage, people are never exactly who they seem to be. I also liked the way the author talks about change and how time can completely transform a relationship.
The book kept me constantly on edge, and I read it very quickly because I always felt the need to know what would happen next. The dark atmosphere, the twists, and the constant uncertainty made the reading experience incredibly engaging. Even so, although I enjoyed it quite a lot, I felt like it was missing that extra something that would have made it truly memorable for me. The ending did not have the impact I expected, and I think I was hoping for a deeper mystery or a different conclusion. Maybe I imagined a different direction for the story, and because of that, the final revelations did not surprise me as much as I had hoped.
Even so, „Beautiful Ugly” remains a very good thriller, tense and easy to devour, especially for readers who love stories filled with secrets and manipulation. Alice Feeney proves once again that she knows exactly how to keep her readers hooked and how to make them question every detail until the very last page.
