The Strawberry Patch Pancake House – Laurie Gilmore (Dream Harbor, #4)

I really loved „The Strawberry Patch Pancake House” by Laurie Gilmore, and I think one of the reasons I enjoyed it so much was that I got to return to Dream Harbor. I have a soft spot for small-town romances, for those little towns where everyone seems to know each other, news travels fast, and, beyond the occasional gossip and everyday happenings, there is a lovely sense of belonging. Dream Harbor has exactly the kind of atmosphere that makes me feel welcome. It was such a delight to return to this place through this book and discover a new love story, with characters you grow fond of and moments that bring a smile to your face.

This time, we meet Archer, a well-known chef who is used to the culinary world and a lifestyle quite different from that of a quiet little town. Although his career never seemed likely to lead him to a place like this, he eventually finds himself in Dream Harbor, where he gets the opportunity to run a pancake restaurant. However, his move isn’t just about work. Archer is also a single dad, and when it comes to his daughter, Olive, he wants more than just financial stability. He wants an environment where she can grow up happily, feel safe, and be surrounded by people who care about her. I really liked this side of his character because, beyond the image of a talented chef and an attractive man, we get to see a father who is simply trying to make the right choices for his child.

Olive brings an extra layer of warmth to the story and adds so much to the dynamic between the characters. Her relationship with Archer gives us plenty of tender moments and shows us another side of him, a more vulnerable one that has nothing to do with his professional reputation. I liked that the story isn’t just about romantic attraction but also highlights the bonds people form when they start sharing the same home, the same worries, and the same little joys. Olive’s presence gives everything a deeper meaning, and this dynamic of a family slowly coming together was one of my favorite aspects of the book.

Then there’s Iris, a character I found endearing precisely because of her imperfections. She’s not the kind of person who has already figured everything out or knows exactly what she wants from life. Quite the opposite, she struggles to keep a job for very long, and that uncertainty makes her feel all the more human. When she finds out that Archer is looking for a live-in nanny for himself and Olive, the opportunity comes with plenty of nerves and reasons to hesitate. Still, Iris eventually agrees to this change, without really knowing what she’s getting herself into. For her, this new beginning means more than just a job. It’s also a chance to find, perhaps for the first time, a place where she genuinely feels at home.

One of the things I loved most was the chemistry between Iris and Archer. Their interactions have that perfect mix of attraction, teasing, and slightly awkward moments that make a romance fun and enjoyable to read. The fact that they live together, constantly run into each other, and have to maintain a certain boundary between their professional relationship and the feelings that are starting to develop creates plenty of entertaining situations. And Archer, with his personality and the moments when he catches Iris off guard, including when he’s cooking shirtless, definitely adds to the romantic tension. I liked how their connection develops gradually, without the story relying solely on physical attraction.

That natural progression of their relationship is exactly what made this such an enjoyable read for me. I love stories where characters have the time to get to know each other, discover what’s beneath the surface, and learn to trust one another. In their case, their growing closeness comes naturally through the time they spend together, the little gestures, their conversations, and the way they gradually become part of each other’s lives. I thought it was lovely that their feelings don’t develop overnight but grow amid responsibilities, insecurities, and all the ordinary things that make up their everyday lives. And the moments when their attraction is impossible to ignore add just the right touch of passion to complement the cozy atmosphere.

Another aspect that caught my attention was the found family theme, that feeling that family isn’t always just about the people you’re related to by blood, but also about those you meet along the way and who eventually become part of your life. Dream Harbor is the perfect setting for this kind of story because the people and the community play an important role in helping the characters build a new life. I loved seeing Archer, Iris, and Olive slowly becoming their own little unit, watching things change bit by bit, and seeing how what initially seemed like a practical arrangement turns into something much more meaningful. There’s something incredibly comforting about stories that remind us that sometimes we find support and affection in the very places and among the very people we never expected.

And, of course, we can’t talk about this book without mentioning the restaurant and its atmosphere. The idea of a pancake restaurant, combined with the charm of a little town like Dream Harbor, gives the story such a lovely setting. I really enjoyed the details about the restaurant world and the way food, work, and everyday life blend with the romance. It’s the kind of book that makes you crave a quiet morning, something delicious to eat, and a few hours when you don’t have to think about everything waiting for you in real life. On top of that, the story maintains a touch of romantic mystery that adds a little curiosity and makes the reading experience about more than just the relationship between the two main characters.

For me, „The Strawberry Patch Pancake House” was exactly the kind of read I needed. It has a pleasant pace, lovable characters, a lovely romance, and just enough humor to keep things from getting too serious. I liked being able to enjoy it without feeling the need to rush, while still finding it engaging enough to want to know what would happen next. It’s a book that combines romance with tender moments, funny situations, and those little insecurities that make relationships feel more real. And the fact that it’s part of the „Dream Harbor” series was a huge plus for me, because returning to the atmosphere of this town made the whole experience even more enjoyable.

I also think this is one of those books that works beautifully in any season. Although its atmosphere feels particularly suited to a spring day, a warm drink, and a cozy blanket, I’d recommend it anytime you’re in the mood for a lighthearted, comforting romance. It’s a great choice when you want to take a break from the everyday hustle, step away from your worries for a little while, and get lost in a story that leaves you feeling good. This isn’t a book I’d pick for complicated plot twists or intense drama, but rather for its atmosphere, the chemistry between the characters, and the way it makes you feel while reading it.

All in all, I absolutely adored „The Strawberry Patch Pancake House”, and I’m so glad I had the chance to return to Dream Harbor. Laurie Gilmore gave me another story that was right up my alley, with a couple that caught my interest, a lovely character dynamic, and that small-town sense of community I always look for in this kind of romance. Archer and Iris made the story more engaging with their interactions, while Olive and the idea of a family slowly coming together added an extra layer of emotion. For all these reasons, this book gets five stars from me. It’s a heartfelt recommendation for fans of small-town romance, anyone who loves single-dad stories, slow-building connections, and cozy reads that offer a few hours of peace and happiness.
