„Soția temporară” de Catharina Maura este o poveste care mi-a plăcut destul de mult și care m-a făcut să mă atașez mai repede decât mă așteptam de personajele ei. Este o carte despre o căsătorie începută ca o înțelegere, despre reguli care par simple doar la început și despre sentimente care, inevitabil, ajung să complice totul. Mi-a plăcut în special faptul că povestea nu se bazează doar pe romantism, ci și pe felul în care două persoane, cu propriile frici și nesiguranțe, încearcă să își găsească locul una lângă cealaltă.
Totul începe într-un moment destul de complicat pentru Luca Windsor. După ce familia lui pune presiune asupra lui și îl împinge spre o logodnă pe care nu și-o dorește, Luca se trezește și fără secretara sa, Valentina, care își anunță plecarea în mod neașteptat. În loc să rezolve cele două probleme separat, el găsește o soluție care pare, la început, simplă și avantajoasă pentru amândoi: îi propune Valentinei să se căsătorească în secret.
Astfel, cei doi ajung să aibă o căsnicie bazată pe câteva reguli clare. Nu trebuie să se îndrăgostească unul de celălalt, nimeni de la birou nu trebuie să afle despre relația lor, iar serile trebuie să le petreacă împreună. Totul ar trebui să fie doar un aranjament temporar, din care fiecare să obțină ceea ce are nevoie. Bineînțeles, lucrurile nu rămân atât de simple. Pe măsură ce trece timpul, granița dintre o înțelegere și o relație reală începe să devină tot mai neclară, iar Luca ajunge să își dea seama că cel mai greu lucru nu este să o convingă pe Valentina să rămână, ci să accepte că, într-o zi, s-ar putea să fie nevoit să îi dea drumul.
Unul dintre lucrurile care mi-au plăcut cel mai mult a fost chimia dintre Luca și Valentina. Relația lor are momente amuzante, tensionate și romantice, iar apropierea dintre ei se construiește treptat. Mi-a plăcut că nu par două personaje perfecte, create doar pentru a avea o poveste de dragoste ideală. Amândoi au bagajele lor emoționale, temeri și momente în care nu știu ce să facă sau cum să își exprime sentimentele. Tocmai aceste imperfecțiuni i-au făcut, pentru mine, mult mai ușor de înțeles.
Am apreciat faptul că autoarea nu a încercat să îi prezinte ca pe niște oameni fără greșeală. Luca poate fi încăpățânat și uneori dificil, iar Valentina nu este nici ea lipsită de nesiguranțe și de momente în care se îndoiește de propriile alegeri. Cu toate acestea, cred că exact această construcție a personajelor face povestea mai ușor de urmărit. Nu trebuie să fie perfecți pentru ca cititorul să îi placă; dimpotrivă, tocmai defectele și vulnerabilitățile lor te fac să îi înțelegi și să empatizezi cu ei. Eu am ajuns să îi îndrăgesc destul de repede și să îmi doresc ca, dincolo de toate complicațiile, să găsească o cale de a fi împreună.
Un alt personaj care mi-a rămas în minte este bunica Windsor. Mi s-a părut unul dintre cele mai simpatice personaje din carte, pentru că are acel tip de personalitate care pare să observe și să înțeleagă mai multe decât spune. Am avut impresia că știe exact de ce are nevoie fiecare dintre nepoții ei, chiar și atunci când ei înșiși nu își dau seama. În felul ei, îi împinge să ia deciziile potrivite și să meargă pe drumul care le-ar putea aduce fericirea, fără să îi lase să se ascundă prea mult în spatele propriilor scuze sau temeri. Prezența ei adaugă și momente mai calde și mai amuzante poveștii.
Per total, „Soția temporară” a fost o lectură care mi-a plăcut și pe care am parcurs-o cu interes. Mi-a plăcut dinamica dintre personaje, felul în care relația lor evoluează și faptul că, dincolo de premisa unei căsătorii de conveniență, povestea vorbește și despre vulnerabilitate, frica de a pierde pe cineva și curajul de a accepta ceea ce simți. Nu este o carte perfectă și, pentru mine, au existat și câteva momente previzibile sau situații care puteau fi dezvoltate mai mult, dar acestea nu mi-au afectat prea mult experiența de lectură.

“The Temporary Wife” by Catharina Maura is a story I enjoyed quite a lot, and one that made me grow attached to its characters much faster than I expected. It is a book about a marriage that begins as an arrangement, about rules that seem simple only at first, and about feelings that inevitably end up complicating everything. What I particularly liked was the fact that the story is not based solely on romance, but also on the way two people, each with their own fears and insecurities, try to find their place beside one another.
Everything begins at a rather complicated moment in Luca Windsor’s life. After his family puts pressure on him and pushes him toward an engagement he does not want, Luca also finds himself without his secretary, Valentina, who unexpectedly announces that she is leaving. Instead of solving the two problems separately, he comes up with a solution that initially seems simple and beneficial for both of them: he asks Valentina to secretly marry him.
As a result, the two of them enter into a marriage based on a few clear rules. They must not fall in love with each other, no one at the office can find out about their relationship, and they have to spend their evenings together. Everything is supposed to be just a temporary arrangement, through which each of them gets what they need. Of course, things do not remain that simple. As time passes, the line between an arrangement and a real relationship begins to blur more and more, and Luca comes to realize that the hardest part is not convincing Valentina to stay, but accepting that one day he may have to let her go.
One of the things I liked most was the chemistry between Luca and Valentina. Their relationship has funny, tense, and romantic moments, and their connection develops gradually. I liked that they do not feel like two perfect characters created solely to have an ideal love story. They both carry their own emotional baggage, fears, and moments when they do not know what to do or how to express their feelings. For me, it was precisely these imperfections that made them much easier to understand.
I also appreciated the fact that the author did not try to portray them as flawless people. Luca can be stubborn and sometimes difficult, while Valentina is not free from insecurities or moments when she doubts her own choices either. However, I think that this is exactly what makes the characters—and the story—more engaging. They do not have to be perfect for the reader to like them; on the contrary, it is their flaws and vulnerabilities that make you understand them and empathize with them. I grew quite fond of them rather quickly and found myself hoping that, despite all the complications, they would find a way to be together.
Another character who stayed with me was Grandma Windsor. I found her to be one of the most lovable characters in the book because she has the kind of personality that seems to notice and understand more than she actually says. I had the impression that she knew exactly what each of her grandchildren needed, even when they did not realize it themselves. In her own way, she pushes them to make the right decisions and follow the path that could bring them happiness, without letting them hide too much behind their own excuses or fears. Her presence also adds warmer and more humorous moments to the story.
Overall, “The Temporary Wife” was a book I enjoyed and read with great interest. I liked the dynamic between the characters, the way their relationship develops, and the fact that, beyond the premise of a marriage of convenience, the story also explores vulnerability, the fear of losing someone, and the courage to accept what you truly feel. It is not a perfect book, and for me there were also a few predictable moments or situations that could have been developed further, but they did not affect my overall reading experience too much.
