„Toate lucrurile periculoase” este unul dintre acele thrillere psihologice care te prind încă din primele pagini și te fac să te îndoiești de absolut tot ce credeai că ai înțeles. Stacy Willingham construiește o poveste apăsătoare, plină de mister, în care fiecare capitol aduce noi întrebări, iar răspunsurile par să fie tot mai departe. Mi-a plăcut foarte mult felul în care autoarea a reușit să mă țină în tensiune până aproape de final, fără să îmi ofere vreodată sentimentul că pot spune cu siguranță cine spune adevărul și cine ascunde ceva.
În centrul poveștii se află Isabelle Drake, o femeie a cărei viață s-a destrămat în noaptea în care fiul ei, Mason, a dispărut din pătuțul lui fără să lase aproape nicio urmă. A trecut un an de atunci, însă cazul a rămas nerezolvat, iar Isabelle continuă să trăiască într-un coșmar din care nu pare să se mai poată trezi. Din cauza traumei și a sentimentului de vinovăție, ea aproape că nu mai doarme deloc, iar insomnia îi afectează tot mai mult memoria, judecata și modul în care percepe realitatea. Singura ei dorință este să afle ce s-a întâmplat cu băiețelul ei, chiar dacă pentru asta trebuie să scoată la lumină cele mai dureroase amintiri din trecut.
Mi-a plăcut foarte mult personajul principal tocmai pentru că nu este deloc ușor de înțeles. Isabelle este construită într-un mod atât de complex, încât de multe ori nu mai știi dacă să ai încredere în ea sau să te întrebi dacă ascunde lucruri mult mai întunecate decât lasă să se vadă. Au fost numeroase momente în care am ajuns să bănuiesc că ar putea avea legătură cu diferite crime sau dispariții, doar pentru ca, peste câteva pagini, să ajung din nou să empatizez cu ea. Suferința provocată de dispariția lui Mason este copleșitoare, iar peste această durere se adaugă și traumele din copilărie, precum și pierderea surorii sale, evenimente care au lăsat urme adânci asupra ei. Tocmai această combinație dintre vulnerabilitate și mister face ca Isabelle să fie un personaj memorabil și foarte bine construit.
Un alt lucru care mi-a plăcut foarte mult a fost felul în care este scris romanul. Autoarea reușește să transforme aproape fiecare personaj într-un posibil suspect. Nimeni nu pare complet sincer, fiecare ascunde câte ceva, iar pe măsură ce apar informații noi ajungi să îți schimbi constant teoriile. De foarte multe ori eram convinsă că am descoperit adevărul, doar pentru ca următorul capitol să răstoarne complet tot ceea ce credeam. Mi s-a părut o construcție foarte inteligentă, care menține suspansul aproape fără întrerupere.
Mi-a plăcut și modul în care este structurată povestea. Acțiunea alternează între prezent, unde Isabelle încearcă să descopere ce s-a întâmplat cu Mason și acceptă să participe la un podcast despre dispariția lui, și trecut, unde aflăm fragmente importante din copilăria ei. Aceste întoarceri în timp nu sunt introduse doar pentru a completa trecutul personajului, ci au un rol esențial în dezvoltarea misterului. Cu fiecare amintire nouă, imaginea lui Isabelle devine tot mai neclară, iar cititorul începe să pună sub semnul întrebării tot ceea ce știe despre ea. Mi-a plăcut foarte mult această alternanță între cele două planuri temporale, pentru că fiecare capitol adăuga o nouă piesă dintr-un puzzle extrem de complicat.
Un rol important îl are și realizatorul podcastului true crime, care începe prin a investiga dispariția lui Mason, dar ajunge să fie tot mai interesat de trecutul lui Isabelle. Întrebările lui insistente și investigațiile pe care le face scot la iveală secrete pe care protagonista ar fi preferat să le lase îngropate. În același timp, lipsa somnului o face pe Isabelle să nu mai fie sigură nici măcar de propriile amintiri, iar această nesiguranță se transmite perfect și cititorului.
Atmosfera este unul dintre cele mai mari puncte forte ale romanului. Descrierile locurilor sunt atât de vii și de realiste încât ai impresia că te afli chiar acolo. În special scenele petrecute în apropierea mlaștinii mi s-au părut incredibil de bine realizate. Peisajele au ceva apăsător și neliniștitor, iar natura pare să ascundă la rândul ei secrete întunecate. Am simțit aproape fizic umezeala, liniștea apăsătoare și pericolul care plutește peste acele locuri. Toate aceste descrieri contribuie enorm la atmosfera de mister și suspans și fac ca povestea să devină și mai captivantă.
Pe lângă partea de investigație, romanul vorbește și despre vinovăție, traumă, doliu, relațiile de familie și felul în care trecutul poate continua să ne influențeze prezentul chiar și după mulți ani. Nimic nu este simplu, iar personajele sunt puse în situații dificile, în care adevărul pare să doară mai mult decât minciuna.
Finalul a fost unul care m-a surprins și care a reușit să lege foarte bine toate firele poveștii. După toate suspiciunile, răsturnările de situație și teoriile pe care mi le-am făcut pe parcurs, explicațiile au fost bine construite și au oferit un deznodământ satisfăcător.
„Toate lucrurile periculoase” este un thriller psihologic foarte bine construit, cu personaje complexe, o atmosferă apăsătoare și un mister care te face să întorci pagină după pagină. Mi-a plăcut foarte mult felul în care Stacy Willingham a construit suspansul și a reușit să mă facă să mă îndoiesc de fiecare personaj, inclusiv de protagonista poveștii. Este o carte pe care am citit-o cu mare interes și pe care o recomand tuturor celor care iubesc thrillerele psihologice în care nimic nu este ceea ce pare.

„All the Dangerous Things” is one of those psychological thrillers that hooks you from the very first pages and makes you question absolutely everything you thought you understood. Stacy Willingham crafts a haunting, mystery-filled story in which every chapter raises new questions while the answers seem to drift even further away. I really enjoyed the way the author kept me on edge until almost the very end, never giving me the feeling that I could confidently tell who was telling the truth and who was hiding something.
At the heart of the story is Isabelle Drake, a woman whose life fell apart on the night her son, Mason, disappeared from his crib without leaving almost any trace behind. A year has passed since then, yet the case remains unsolved, and Isabelle continues to live in a nightmare she cannot seem to wake up from. Crippled by trauma and overwhelming guilt, she barely sleeps anymore, and her insomnia increasingly affects her memory, judgment, and perception of reality. Her only wish is to discover what happened to her little boy, even if it means bringing her most painful memories back to the surface.
I especially liked the main character because she is anything but easy to understand. Isabelle is written with such complexity that, more often than not, you don’t know whether to trust her or wonder if she is hiding something far darker than she lets on. There were countless moments when I suspected she might be connected to various crimes or disappearances, only to find myself empathizing with her again a few pages later. The grief caused by Mason’s disappearance is overwhelming, and on top of that, she carries the scars of childhood trauma and the loss of her sister—events that have left deep emotional wounds. It is precisely this combination of vulnerability and mystery that makes Isabelle such a memorable and well-developed character.
Another aspect I really appreciated was the novel’s writing. The author manages to turn almost every character into a potential suspect. No one seems entirely honest, everyone is hiding something, and as new information comes to light, you constantly find yourself changing your theories. So many times I was convinced I had figured everything out, only for the next chapter to completely overturn everything I believed. I found it to be an incredibly clever structure that maintains suspense almost without interruption.
I also loved the way the story is structured. The narrative alternates between the present, where Isabelle is trying to uncover what happened to Mason and agrees to take part in a podcast about his disappearance, and the past, where we gradually learn important details about her childhood. These flashbacks are not included merely to fill in her backstory—they play a crucial role in developing the mystery. With every new memory, Isabelle becomes more difficult to understand, and the reader begins to question everything they think they know about her. I really enjoyed this alternating timeline because each chapter added another piece to an incredibly intricate puzzle.
The true crime podcast host also plays an important role. He begins by investigating Mason’s disappearance but gradually becomes increasingly interested in Isabelle’s past. His persistent questions and relentless investigation uncover secrets that Isabelle would have much rather kept buried. At the same time, her severe lack of sleep leaves her uncertain even about her own memories, and that uncertainty is conveyed perfectly to the reader.
The atmosphere is one of the novel’s greatest strengths. The descriptions of the settings are so vivid and realistic that you feel as though you are right there alongside the characters. I found the scenes set near the swamp especially impressive. The landscape has an unsettling, oppressive quality, and nature itself seems to be hiding dark secrets. I could almost physically feel the dampness, the heavy silence, and the ever-present sense of danger hanging over those places. All of these descriptions contribute enormously to the novel’s atmosphere of mystery and suspense, making the story even more captivating.
Beyond the investigation itself, the novel also explores themes of guilt, trauma, grief, family relationships, and the ways in which the past continues to shape the present, even many years later. Nothing is simple, and the characters are forced into difficult situations where the truth often seems more painful than the lie.
The ending genuinely surprised me and tied all the storylines together beautifully. After all the suspicions, twists, and theories I came up with while reading, the explanations felt well-earned and delivered a satisfying conclusion.
„All the Dangerous Things” is an exceptionally well-crafted psychological thriller featuring complex characters, a haunting atmosphere, and a mystery that keeps you turning the pages. I really enjoyed the way Stacy Willingham built the suspense and constantly made me doubt every single character—including the protagonist herself. It’s a book I read with great interest, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves psychological thrillers where nothing is ever quite what it seems.
