„Bun-venit la librăria Hyunam-dong” de Hwang Bo-reum este una dintre acele cărți care m-au cucerit fără efort și care au rămas cu mine mult timp după ce am închis ultima pagină. Cred că am o slăbiciune clară pentru poveștile care au în centru o librărie sau oameni care trăiesc printre cărți, iar aici, dacă mai adaugi și mirosul de cafea și atmosfera caldă, liniștită, totul devine exact genul meu de lectură ideală.
Povestea o urmărește pe Yeong-ju, o femeie care, din exterior, pare că a făcut totul „corect” în viață: a studiat, s-a căsătorit, și-a construit o carieră stabilă. Și totuși, în interior, se simte epuizată și pierdută. La un moment dat, tot echilibrul acesta aparent se rupe, iar ea face un pas curajos și neașteptat: renunță la tot și decide să-și urmeze visul din copilărie, acela de a deschide o librărie. Nu este o decizie ușoară și nici nu vine cu garanții, dar tocmai asta face povestea atât de reală.
Librăria Hyunam-dong nu este doar un loc unde se vând cărți, ci devine treptat un refugiu pentru oameni diferiți, fiecare cu propriile lupte. Îi întâlnim pe cei care ajung acolo: un barista retras, o femeie prinsă într-o căsnicie nefericită, un scriitor care vede dincolo de aparențe și alți clienți care caută, fără să știe exact, un loc unde să respire. Fiecare personaj vine cu bagajul lui de frustrări, dezamăgiri și momente grele, iar interacțiunile dintre ei sunt simple, dar pline de sens.
Mi-a plăcut foarte mult cât de profundă este această carte, chiar dacă la prima vedere pare o poveste liniștită, fără mari răsturnări de situație. În realitate, ea vorbește mult despre emoții, despre oboseala de a trăi după așteptările altora și despre nevoia de a te regăsi. Personajele sunt construite cu multă grijă, sunt imperfecte și reale, iar tocmai de aceea este imposibil să nu empatizezi cu ele. Fiecare încearcă să pară bine în fața celorlalți, dar în interior duce o luptă pe care rar o arată.
Ritmul acțiunii este unul lent, dar cred că exact asta face cartea atât de reconfortantă. Nu este genul de poveste care te ține în suspans, ci mai degrabă una care te invită să te oprești, să respiri și să te gândești la tine. Este o lectură cozy, caldă, care te face să-ți dorești să stai într-un colț liniștit, cu o cafea în mână și să reflectezi la propriile alegeri.
Un alt lucru care mi-a plăcut mult este ideea că schimbarea nu vine brusc și perfect. Yeong-ju nu devine dintr-o dată o altă persoană, dar, pas cu pas, învață să fie mai atentă la ceilalți, să ofere și să se deschidă. Librăria devine pentru ea nu doar un loc de muncă, ci un spațiu în care crește, greșește și încearcă din nou.
Pentru mine, această carte a fost mai mult decât o simplă poveste, a fost o experiență liniștitoare și sinceră, care mi-a amintit că nu este niciodată prea târziu să o iei de la capăt și să-ți construiești o viață care chiar te reprezintă. Este genul de lectură care nu impresionează prin acțiune, ci prin emoție și autenticitate, și pe care o recomand din toată inima în momentele în care ai nevoie de puțină liniște și claritate.

“Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookshop” by Hwang Bo-reum is one of those books that won me over effortlessly and stayed with me long after I turned the final page. I think I clearly have a soft spot for stories centered around a bookstore or people who live among books, and here, if you also add the smell of coffee and that warm, cozy atmosphere, everything becomes exactly my kind of ideal read.
The story follows Yeong-ju, a woman who, from the outside, seems to have done everything “right” in life: she studied, got married, and built a stable career. And yet, inside, she feels exhausted and lost. At some point, that seemingly perfect balance breaks, and she takes a brave and unexpected step: she gives everything up and decides to follow her childhood dream of opening a bookstore. It’s not an easy decision, and it doesn’t come with guarantees, but that’s exactly what makes the story feel so real.
The Hyunam-dong Bookshop is not just a place where books are sold—it gradually becomes a refuge for different people, each with their own struggles. We meet those who end up there: a withdrawn barista, a woman stuck in an unhappy marriage, a writer who sees beyond appearances, and other customers who are searching—without quite knowing—for a place where they can breathe. Each character carries their own baggage of frustrations, disappointments, and hardships, and their interactions are simple yet meaningful.
I really loved how deep this book is, even though at first glance it may seem like a quiet story without major twists. In reality, it speaks a lot about emotions, about the exhaustion of living according to others’ expectations, and about the need to rediscover yourself. The characters are carefully crafted, imperfect and real, and that’s exactly why it’s impossible not to empathize with them. Each of them tries to appear fine in front of others, but inside they’re fighting battles they rarely show.
The pace of the story is slow, but I think that’s precisely what makes the book so comforting. It’s not the kind of story that keeps you on edge, but rather one that invites you to pause, breathe, and reflect on yourself. It’s a cozy, warm read that makes you want to sit in a quiet corner with a cup of coffee and think about your own choices.
Another thing I really appreciated is the idea that change doesn’t happen suddenly or perfectly. Yeong-ju doesn’t instantly become a different person, but step by step, she learns to be more attentive to others, to give, and to open up. The bookshop becomes for her not just a workplace, but a space where she grows, makes mistakes, and tries again.
For me, this book was more than just a story—it was a calming and sincere experience that reminded me it’s never too late to start over and build a life that truly represents you. It’s the kind of read that doesn’t impress through action, but through emotion and authenticity, and one I wholeheartedly recommend in moments when you need a bit of peace and clarity.
