„Vara noastră de demult” de Roxanne Veletzos este o lectură care mi-a rămas adânc întipărită în inimă. Cartea te transportă în Ungaria anului 1943, într-un decor în care pacea aparentă a unui oraș idilic este pe cale să fie spulberată de umbrele războiului și de o poveste de dragoste interzisă.
Personajul principal, Eva César, este o tânără nobilă care, la prima vedere, pare să aibă o viață perfectă: o familie aristocrată, o nuntă planificată cu un bărbat respectat și viitorul asigurat. Totuși, sub această fațadă, se află o tânără care simte nevoia să se elibereze de sub controlul unui tată sever și de presiunea unei societăți rigide. Mi-a fost imposibil să nu mă conectez cu dorința Evei de libertate și de a găsi un sens autentic în viața sa, dincolo de obligațiile impuse.
Totul se schimbă pentru Eva atunci când îl întâlnește pe Aleandro, un violonist rom, un personaj care mi-a rămas în minte prin pasiunea sa pentru muzică și prin spiritul său liber. Dragostea lor, deși condamnată de vremurile și normele sociale, este profundă și tulburătoare. A fost fascinant să asist la felul în care această poveste de dragoste se dezvoltă în ciuda tuturor obstacolelor, numai pentru a fi brutal despărțiți de o lume plină de ură și intoleranță.
Ceea ce m-a impresionat cel mai mult a fost modul în care Veletzos reușește să îmbine o poveste personală cu marile drame ale istoriei. Cartea nu este doar despre Eva și Aleandro, ci despre felul în care războiul, revoluția și trecerea timpului modelează viețile celor implicați. Fiecare pagină este încărcată de emoție, de la ororile războiului la tensiunile Revoluției Maghiare din 1956, toate aceste evenimente lăsând urme adânci în destinele personajelor.
Veletzos explorează, de asemenea, prețul devastator al secretelor și al deciziilor greșite. Eva și Aleandro, deși separați, nu pot uita acea vară magică, iar amintirea ei le bântuie viețile și deciziile, într-un mod care mi-a arătat cât de puternice pot fi legăturile create în momente de intensă vulnerabilitate.
Pentru mine, „Vara noastră de demult” nu este doar o poveste de dragoste, ci o meditație asupra rezilienței spiritului uman în fața adversității. M-a impresionat cum, în ciuda tuturor suferințelor și pierderilor, există o lumină care nu se stinge, o speranță care continuă să trăiască. Este o carte care te face să reflectezi asupra sacrificiilor pe care le facem din dragoste și asupra modului în care trecutul ne modelează viitorul.
Această carte m-a purtat printr-un carusel emoțional, mi-a rupt inima și, totodată, mi-a oferit speranță. O recomand din toată inima celor care iubesc poveștile de dragoste complexe, dar și celor care apreciază o scriere sensibilă, cu personaje bine conturate și un fundal istoric bogat. Pentru mine, este fără îndoială o lectură de cinci stele, care merită fiecare minut petrecut în paginile sale.

“When the Summer Was Ours” by Roxanne Veletzos is a story that left a deep impression on my heart. The book transports you to Hungary in 1943, set in a backdrop where the apparent peace of an idyllic town is about to be shattered by the shadows of war and a forbidden love story.
The protagonist, Eva César, is a young noblewoman who, at first glance, seems to have a perfect life: an aristocratic family, a planned wedding to a respected man, and a secured future. Yet beneath this façade lies a young woman yearning to break free from the control of a strict father and the pressures of a rigid society. I couldn’t help but connect with Eva’s desire for freedom and her search for genuine meaning in life, beyond the constraints of imposed duties.
Everything changes for Eva when she meets Aleandro, a Romani violinist, a character who stayed with me for his passion for music and his free spirit. Their love, condemned by the times and societal norms, is profound and heartbreaking. It was fascinating to witness how this love story unfolds despite all obstacles, only to be brutally torn apart by a world filled with hatred and intolerance.
What impressed me most was how Veletzos masterfully weaves a personal story with the grand dramas of history. The book isn’t just about Eva and Aleandro but also about how war, revolution, and the passage of time shape the lives of those involved. Each page is charged with emotion, from the horrors of war to the tensions of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, with all these events leaving deep marks on the characters’ destinies.
Veletzos also explores the devastating price of secrets and wrong decisions. Eva and Aleandro, though separated, can never forget that magical summer, and its memory haunts their lives and choices in a way that shows how powerful connections formed in moments of intense vulnerability can be.
For me, “When the Summer Was Ours” is not just a love story but a meditation on the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. I was moved by how, despite all the suffering and loss, there is a light that does not fade, a hope that continues to live on. It’s a book that makes you reflect on the sacrifices we make for love and how the past shapes our future.
This book took me on an emotional rollercoaster, broke my heart, and, at the same time, gave me hope. I wholeheartedly recommend it to those who love complex love stories and to those who appreciate sensitive writing, with well-drawn characters and a rich historical backdrop. For me, it’s undoubtedly a five-star read, worth every minute spent within its pages.
