This is the author’s second book, following The Whisper Man, and it’s clear that North has honed his craft in creating a dual-timeline psychological thriller filled with suspense and unexpected twists.
The novel is tinged with a supernatural, almost paranormal element that adds an extra layer of depth to the story. From the very first pages, I was captivated by the chilling and emotional atmosphere, where every detail is meticulously constructed to deliver an intense sensory and visual experience. Dream sequences blend seamlessly with reality, heightening the tension and mystery of every scene.
The plot unfolds across two timelines, adding a layer of complexity and richness. Twenty-five years ago, Paul Adams experienced the worst day of his life when one of his friends was killed in a ritual performed by two other “friends.” One of the culprits was caught, but the other, Charlie Crabtree, vanished without a trace, with rumors suggesting he was living in the woods.
Returning to his hometown of Gritten to visit his dementia-stricken mother in a care home, Paul is forced to confront the ghosts of his past. Meanwhile, Detective Amanda Beck from Featherbank (whom we met in The Whisper Man) is investigating a recent murder where two teenagers killed a classmate. Her investigation leads her back in time to the events surrounding Charlie Crabtree and Paul, creating a fascinating and terrifying connection between past and present.
What impressed me most about this book was the way Alex North subtly advises readers not to jump to conclusions. Every twist and every revealed detail forces you to constantly reassess your theories, keeping the suspense at its peak until the very last page.
The Shadow Friend is a gripping novel that delicately balances the natural and supernatural. It’s a story about friendship, guilt, and forgiveness, but also about the fear of the unknown and the power of the past to shape our future. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking a well-written thriller full of mystery and emotion, as well as to those looking for a deep and thought-provoking read.
