When her estranged husband reappears after years of absence and offers to take care of the kids for the summer, Amy seizes the opportunity and heads to New York, leaving behind her rural Pennsylvania life.
On one hand, I admired Amy’s courage in reclaiming time and space for herself. Her adventure in New York, exploring the city’s vibrant cultural scene and embracing new experiences, is described with vivid detail, making you feel as though you’re right there with her. Blind dates and newfound friendships add a lively spark to the story, and a certain man manages to touch her heart, introducing a potential romance.
That said, I struggled to truly connect with Amy or her dilemmas. While the book touches on important themes like self-discovery and balancing personal life with parental responsibilities, I found the protagonist’s journey predictable and, at times, forced. Additionally, some scenarios felt overly idealized, lacking the authenticity and emotional depth needed to resonate on a deeper level.
Toward the end, when Amy is forced to confront a crisis that bridges her two worlds, I hoped the story would take a more profound and realistic turn. However, the resolution was predictable and didn’t deliver the emotional payoff I was anticipating.
