The Cinnamon Spice Inn – Harper Graham (Maple Falls, #1)
I enjoyed this book quite a lot, even though the story doesn’t bring anything new to the kinds of novels I’ve read before. Sometimes, that’s exactly what I’m looking for: a warm story, a pleasant atmosphere, and characters whose company I enjoy. I know roughly what to expect from a cozy romance, and every now and then I need something familiar and comforting—something that helps me switch off and leaves me feeling good.
The story follows Madison, a young woman who loves coffee and writes about food. She’s convinced that New York is where she belongs. Her life seems to be there, far from the small town where she grew up. But when the Cinnamon Spice Inn, a place that holds so many childhood memories, needs help, Madison returns to Maple Falls. This time, she has a clear goal: to save the inn and get it ready to reopen.
Coming home also brings an encounter she would rather avoid: Zach, her ex-boyfriend. He’s the contractor hired to renovate the inn, and he seems determined to keep his promise, even if it means working alongside Madison every day. Zach is calm and handy, and his green-brown eyes do nothing to make her task any easier. Madison, on the other hand, is stubborn and hot-tempered, especially when things don’t go according to plan. There’s old tension between them, but also an attraction that doesn’t seem to have faded.
I enjoyed watching their relationship develop as they work together to renovate the inn. At first, they each try to focus on the job and not let the past get in the way. But spending time together reminds them of the closeness they once shared and makes them confront the reasons they broke up. The preparations for the grand Halloween reopening add even more atmosphere to the story, and the inn becomes a place where not only the building but also Madison and Zach’s feelings begin to come back to life.
The characters felt well developed to me. Madison has energy, knows what she wants, and isn’t afraid to stand her ground. But returning to Maple Falls makes her look at her plans—and her connection to the place where she grew up—in a new light. Zach seems more laid-back, but he, too, is carrying feelings he hasn’t been able to leave behind. I enjoyed watching them together: the teasing, the irritation, and the way they gradually let their guard down.
The story flowed naturally, even if some moments were predictable. I had a sense of where things were headed, but that didn’t take away from my enjoyment. If anything, I loved reading it for the atmosphere and for how it made me feel. Sometimes I don’t need unexpected twists; I just want to spend time in a welcoming small town, follow a love story, and know I’ll be left with a pleasant feeling at the end.
For me, „The Cinnamon Spice Inn” is the perfect autumn read. The inn, the Halloween preparations, and the gradual closeness between Madison and Zach are just right for a chilly afternoon and a fragrant drink. If you’re a fan of the „Dream Harbor” series or enjoy the familiar, charming atmosphere of „Gilmore Girls”, I think you’ll find something inviting in „Maple Falls”, too. The book made me feel as though I’d returned to a place I love and wanted to stay in a little longer.
I’m giving it five stars because it gave me exactly what I was looking for: a romantic story, likable characters, and a cozy atmosphere that made me feel good. It doesn’t try to reinvent the genre, but it has its own charm and makes you want to spend more time with Madison, Zach, and the people of Maple Falls. I closed the book with a smile and the feeling that I’d traveled to a small town I’d love to visit again.
