„Fragrancia” de Paul Richardot a fost una dintre acele cărți de la care am avut așteptări destul de mari, mai ales după ce am citit sinopsisul. Ideea mi s-a părut extrem de interesantă și diferită de ceea ce citesc de obicei: posibilitatea de a retrăi amintiri prin intermediul mirosurilor, dar și folosirea acestora într-o investigație criminală. Mi s-a părut genul de premisă care poate duce la un thriller foarte original și captivant. Din păcate, deși conceptul mi-a plăcut foarte mult, felul în care a fost pus în practică nu a funcționat pentru mine.
Povestea ne introduce într-o lume în care mirosurile nu sunt doar simple senzații, ci pot deveni o adevărată poartă către trecut. Fragrancia este o companie care, cu ajutorul unei substanțe psihotrope numite SVM, le oferă anumitor persoane posibilitatea de a retrăi amintiri prin intermediul parfumurilor. Ideea mi s-a părut una dintre cele mai interesante părți ale cărții, pentru că este foarte ușor să te gândești la propriile amintiri legate de anumite mirosuri. Un parfum, mirosul unei case, al unei persoane sau chiar al unui anumit loc poate să ne ducă instantaneu într-un moment pe care îl credeam uitat. Tocmai această legătură dintre miros, memorie și emoție mi-a atras atenția încă de la început.
Personajul principal este Hélias, un tânăr de 24 de ani care, oficial, lucrează ca aromaterapeut. În realitate, el se pregătește pentru un rol mult mai neobișnuit în cadrul Fragrancia: acela de olfat. Cu alte cuvinte, Hélias trebuie să fie capabil să identifice și să interpreteze mirosurile atât de precis încât să poată transforma o amintire într-o formulă chimică. Mi s-a părut interesant și faptul că sensibilitatea sa foarte mare la mirosuri, care inițial pare mai degrabă un dezavantaj, ajunge să fie tocmai ceea ce îl face potrivit pentru acest rol.
În jurul lui Hélias se află și Nora, unul dintre personajele care mi-au ridicat destul de multe semne de întrebare. Ea este mâna dreaptă a fondatorului Fragrancia și este extrem de hotărâtă să protejeze compania și interesele acestuia, indiferent de consecințe. Relația și interacțiunile dintre Hélias și Nora ajung să îl împingă pe protagonist într-o situație din ce în ce mai complicată, iar lucrurile se leagă treptat de o anchetă a poliției. De aici începe să se contureze și partea de thriller a romanului, în care mirosurile pot deveni indicii și, în anumite situații, chiar o modalitate de a ajunge la persoana responsabilă pentru o crimă.
Recunosc că exact această parte m-a făcut să vreau să citesc cartea. Ideea că un criminal ar putea fi identificat pe baza unui miros mi se pare foarte interesantă și mi-ar fi plăcut să văd această idee exploatată mai mult. Mi-am imaginat o investigație în care fiecare parfum sau urmă olfactivă ascunde câte o piesă din puzzle și în care Hélias trebuie să își folosească talentul pentru a descoperi adevărul. Din păcate, pe măsură ce am înaintat în poveste, am simțit tot mai puțin entuziasm.
Problema principală pentru mine a fost modul în care a fost construită povestea. Am avut impresia că autorul a vrut să ofere foarte multe informații despre universul creat, despre tehnologie, despre mirosuri și despre mecanismele din spatele Fragrancia, însă toate aceste detalii au ajuns să îngreuneze lectura. În loc să mă ajute să intru mai ușor în poveste, uneori m-au făcut să pierd firul acțiunii. Au existat momente în care simțeam că trebuie să depun prea mult efort pentru a urmări ce se întâmplă și cum se leagă toate lucrurile între ele.
Nici personajele nu au reușit să mă convingă pe deplin. Hélias avea toate ingredientele pentru a fi un protagonist interesant, mai ales datorită sensibilității sale neobișnuite și a felului în care percepe lumea prin mirosuri, însă nu am ajuns să mă atașez de el. În ceea ce o privește pe Nora, nici în cazul ei nu am reușit să găsesc acea conexiune pe care mi-aș fi dorit-o. Am înțeles, în mare, motivațiile personajelor și rolul pe care îl au în poveste, dar multe dintre acțiunile lor mi s-au părut greu de urmărit sau de înțeles. Uneori nu eram sigură de ce iau anumite decizii și nici nu am simțit că personajele au fost suficient de bine dezvoltate pentru ca alegerile lor să mă afecteze cu adevărat.
Un alt lucru care m-a făcut să mă simt destul de deconectată de roman a fost ritmul. Cartea este prezentată ca un thriller alert, cu suspans și cu o atmosferă high-tech, însă pentru mine lectura nu a fost atât de captivantă pe cât speram. Au fost momente în care am simțit că acțiunea înaintează, dar nu neapărat într-un mod care să mă facă să vreau să aflu imediat ce urmează. În loc să fiu prinsă în investigație și să încerc să rezolv misterul alături de personaje, m-am trezit mai degrabă încercând să pun cap la cap informațiile pe care le primeam.
Și este păcat, pentru că premisa avea foarte mult potențial. Conceptul mirosurilor care pot readuce la suprafață amintiri uitate mi se pare foarte frumos și, în același timp, foarte puternic. Cred că este una dintre acele idei care pot fi explorate atât din punct de vedere al thrillerului, cât și dintr-o perspectivă mai emoțională. Mi-ar fi plăcut să simt mai mult partea aceasta, să văd cum amintirile influențează personajele și să existe o legătură mai puternică între mirosuri, trecut și ceea ce se întâmplă în prezent.
Din păcate, pentru mine, „Fragrancia” a fost mai mult o idee foarte bună decât o poveste care să mă convingă. Am început cartea cu multă curiozitate, tocmai pentru că sinopsisul promitea ceva neobișnuit, însă pe parcurs am simțit că execuția nu a fost la nivelul conceptului. Nu spun că este o carte lipsită de calități, universul este cu siguranță original, iar ideea din spatele Fragrancia este una care mi-a rămas în minte, însă modul în care au fost prezentate personajele și acțiunea nu a funcționat pentru mine.
În final, „Fragrancia” primește din partea mea 2 stele din 5. Nu am foarte multe lucruri pozitive de adăugat, pentru că, în ciuda unei idei care m-a atras enorm, lectura nu mi-a oferit experiența pe care o așteptam. Mi-aș fi dorit mai multă claritate, personaje cu care să pot empatiza și o investigație care să mă țină cu adevărat curioasă până la final. Dacă sunteți atrași de ideea memoriei declanșate de mirosuri, de parfumuri și de un thriller care combină crima cu tehnologia, s-ar putea ca „Fragrancia” să vă stârnească interesul. În cazul meu însă, diferența dintre un sinopsis care m-a făcut imediat să vreau să citesc cartea și experiența propriu-zisă de lectură a fost destul de mare.
Fragrancia – Paul Richardot
„Fragrancia” by Paul Richardot was one of those books I had fairly high expectations for, especially after reading the synopsis. The idea seemed extremely interesting and different from what I usually read: the possibility of reliving memories through scents, as well as using them in a criminal investigation. It felt like the kind of premise that could lead to a very original and captivating thriller. Unfortunately, although I really liked the concept, the way it was executed did not work for me.
The story introduces us to a world where scents are not simply sensations, but can become a true gateway to the past. Fragrancia is a company that, with the help of a psychotropic substance called SVM, gives certain people the ability to relive memories through fragrances. I found this to be one of the most interesting aspects of the book, because it is very easy to think about our own memories associated with certain smells. A perfume, the smell of a house, a person, or even a particular place can instantly take us back to a moment we thought we had forgotten. It was precisely this connection between scent, memory, and emotion that caught my attention from the very beginning.
The main character is Hélias, a 24-year-old man who officially works as an aromatherapist. In reality, he is training for a much more unusual role at Fragrancia: that of an olfactist. In other words, Hélias has to be able to identify and interpret scents with such precision that he can turn a memory into a chemical formula. I also found it interesting that his extreme sensitivity to smells, which initially seems more like a disadvantage, ultimately becomes the very thing that makes him suited for this role.
Hélias is also surrounded by Nora, one of the characters who raised quite a few questions for me. She is the right-hand woman of Fragrancia’s founder and is extremely determined to protect the company and his interests, regardless of the consequences. The relationship and interactions between Hélias and Nora gradually push the protagonist into an increasingly complicated situation, and things eventually become connected to a police investigation. This is where the thriller aspect of the novel begins to take shape, with scents becoming clues and, in certain situations, even a way of identifying the person responsible for a crime.
I have to admit that this was exactly the part that made me want to read the book. The idea that a criminal could be identified based on a scent is incredibly interesting to me, and I would have loved to see this concept explored much further. I imagined an investigation in which every perfume or olfactory trace contained another piece of the puzzle, with Hélias having to use his talent to uncover the truth. Unfortunately, as I progressed through the story, I found myself becoming less and less enthusiastic.
The main problem for me was the way the story was constructed. I felt that the author wanted to provide a great deal of information about the world he had created, the technology, scents, and the mechanisms behind Fragrancia, but all these details ended up making the reading experience more difficult. Instead of helping me immerse myself in the story, they sometimes made me lose track of the plot. There were moments when I felt that I had to put in too much effort just to follow what was happening and understand how everything connected.
The characters did not fully convince me either. Hélias had all the ingredients to be an interesting protagonist, especially because of his unusual sensitivity and the way he perceives the world through scents, but I never became attached to him. As for Nora, I also failed to find the connection with her that I would have liked. I generally understood the characters’ motivations and their roles in the story, but many of their actions felt difficult to follow or understand. Sometimes I wasn’t sure why they were making certain decisions, and I also didn’t feel that the characters were developed enough for their choices to have a real emotional impact on me.
Another thing that made me feel quite disconnected from the novel was the pacing. The book is presented as a fast-paced thriller, with suspense and a high-tech atmosphere, but for me, the reading experience was not nearly as gripping as I had hoped. There were moments when I felt that the plot was moving forward, but not necessarily in a way that made me immediately want to find out what would happen next. Instead of being drawn into the investigation and trying to solve the mystery alongside the characters, I found myself mostly trying to piece together the information I was being given.
And that’s a shame, because the premise had so much potential. The concept of scents bringing forgotten memories back to the surface is both beautiful and incredibly powerful. I think it is one of those ideas that could be explored both from a thriller perspective and from a more emotional one. I would have loved to feel more of that aspect, to see how memories affect the characters, and to have a stronger connection between scents, the past, and what is happening in the present.
Unfortunately, for me, „Fragrancia” was more of a very good idea than a story that managed to convince me. I started the book with a lot of curiosity, precisely because the synopsis promised something unusual, but as I progressed, I felt that the execution did not live up to the concept. I’m not saying that the book is without its qualities—the world is certainly original, and the idea behind Fragrancia is one that has stayed with me—but the way the characters and the plot were presented simply did not work for me.
In the end, „Fragrancia” gets 2 out of 5 stars from me. I don’t have many positive things to add, because despite a concept that initially intrigued me immensely, the reading experience did not give me what I was hoping for. I would have liked more clarity, characters I could empathize with, and an investigation that would genuinely keep me curious until the very end. If you’re drawn to the idea of memories being triggered by scents, perfumes, and a thriller that combines crime with technology, „Fragrancia” might spark your interest. In my case, however, the gap between a synopsis that immediately made me want to read the book and the actual reading experience was quite significant.
