Sunt cărți care îți plac, sunt cărți care te emoționează, iar apoi sunt acele cărți care reușesc să te ia complet prin surprindere și să rămână cu tine mult timp după ce ai citit ultima pagină. Pentru mine, „A doua viață a lui Joey Vasquez” de Natalie Messier a fost cu siguranță una dintre acestea. Mi-a plăcut enorm de mult și, sincer, nu mă așteptam ca povestea lui Joey să mă poarte prin atât de multe stări. Am zâmbit, m-am enervat alături de personaje, am simțit emoție, nostalgie și, în multe momente, m-am oprit pur și simplu ca să mă gândesc la propria mea viață.
Joey Vasquez pare să aibă, la prima vedere, tot ceea ce și-ar putea dori. La treizeci și doi de ani are o carieră bună ca avocată, o casă în Los Angeles și se află foarte aproape de momentul în care ar putea deveni parteneră în firma în care lucrează. Totuși, dincolo de imaginea unei vieți perfecte, Joey poartă cu ea multe regrete și sentimente pe care nu a avut niciodată curajul să le spună cu voce tare. Unul dintre cele mai importante este iubirea ei pentru Elijah Aarons, cel mai bun prieten al său, bărbatul pe care îl iubește în secret de paisprezece ani și alături de care s-a imaginat, poate, mai mult decât a îndrăznit vreodată să recunoască.
Totul se schimbă brusc în noiembrie 2026, când viața lui Joey se termină într-un accident pe o autostradă din Los Angeles. Numai că, într-un mod complet neașteptat, povestea ei nu se încheie aici. Joey primește o a doua șansă și se trezește în septembrie 2012, la optsprezece ani, cu toate amintirile primei sale vieți intacte. Dintr-odată, are în față ceva ce nimeni nu primește cu adevărat: posibilitatea de a retrăi anumite momente și de a face alte alegeri.
Pentru Joey, planul pare simplu. Este convinsă că s-a întors în timp pentru a face lucrurile cum trebuie și, mai ales, pentru a-l face pe Elijah să înțeleagă că ei doi ar trebui să fie împreună. Doar că viața are alte planuri. Sau poate că, de fapt, viața încearcă să-i arate ceva ce Joey nu a vrut niciodată să vadă.
Pentru că există și Alex Aquino. Alex, omul care în prima ei viață a reușit să o scoată din sărite ani la rând și pe care Joey îl consideră, fără prea multe discuții, una dintre ultimele persoane pe care și-ar dori să le aibă în preajmă. Și totuși, în această a doua viață, Alex devine din nou imposibil de ignorat. Dacă înainte reușea să o enerveze prin simpla lui prezență, acum pare să aibă un talent și mai mare de a-i întoarce lumea pe dos. Ca și cum nu era suficient că i-a făcut viața dificilă prima dată, acum reușește să o zăpăcească de-a dreptul.
Mi-a plăcut foarte mult felul în care este construită relația dintre Joey și Alex. Nu este doar o poveste despre atracție sau despre doi oameni care se plac, ci despre prejudecăți, despre lucruri pe care credem că le știm despre ceilalți și despre cât de mult ne poate influența trecutul felul în care privim prezentul. Joey crede că știe exact cine este Alex, la fel cum crede că știe exact ce își dorește de la viață. Dar, pe măsură ce are ocazia să-l cunoască din nou și să retrăiască anumite momente, începe să descopere că uneori ne agățăm de o versiune a unei persoane fără să ne dăm seama că, între timp, am putea vedea cu totul altceva.
Și aici cred că se află unul dintre lucrurile care mi-au plăcut cel mai mult la această carte: nu este vorba doar despre o a doua șansă în iubire, ci și despre o a doua șansă de a te înțelege pe tine însuți. Joey are ocazia să privească totul cu ochii femeii de treizeci și doi de ani, dar să trăiască din nou experiențele unei fete de optsprezece ani. Știe unde au dus anumite alegeri, știe ce regrete a avut și știe, cel puțin în teorie, ce ar vrea să schimbe. Numai că atunci când ajungi cu adevărat în fața acelorași oameni și a acelorași momente, lucrurile nu sunt niciodată atât de simple pe cât par.
Pe mine, lectura aceasta m-a pus serios pe gânduri. M-am trezit de multe ori întrebându-mă ce aș face eu dacă aș primi o astfel de șansă. Dacă m-aș putea întoarce într-un anumit moment al vieții mele, ce aș schimba cu adevărat? Ce decizii aș lua diferit? Aș încerca să evit greșelile sau aș păstra anumite experiențe, chiar dacă au fost dureroase, pentru că m-au ajutat să devin omul care sunt astăzi? Cu cine aș alege să-mi petrec timpul și de cine m-aș îndepărta? Și, poate cea mai grea întrebare dintre toate, cât de diferită ar fi viața mea dacă, într-un moment important, aș fi ales un alt drum?
Mi-a plăcut că aceste întrebări nu sunt prezentate într-un mod apăsător sau prea filozofic. Cartea rămâne o poveste romantică, plină de momente amuzante, tensiune și emoție, dar printre toate acestea strecoară și ideea că viața nu înseamnă doar marile decizii. Uneori, o conversație, o întâlnire sau alegerea de a mai rămâne puțin lângă cineva poate schimba direcția în care mergem fără să ne dăm seama pe moment.
Personajele mi s-au părut foarte bine construite și acesta este un alt motiv pentru care am intrat atât de ușor în poveste. Joey nu este un personaj perfect și tocmai de aceea mi s-a părut atât de ușor de înțeles. Are nesiguranțe, regrete și convingeri de care se agață, chiar și atunci când realitatea începe să-i demonstreze că poate nu are dreptate. Elijah și Alex nu sunt doar două variante între care trebuie să aleagă, ci două prezențe care o ajută, fiecare în felul său, să înțeleagă mai bine ce își dorește cu adevărat. Pe măsură ce avansăm cu lectura, aflăm tot mai multe despre ei și despre relațiile dintre personaje, iar impresiile de la început se schimbă treptat.
Mi-a plăcut mult această descoperire lentă a personajelor. Nu am avut senzația că le primesc pe toate explicate din primele pagini. Le-am cunoscut pas cu pas, prin reacțiile lor, prin discuții, prin greșeli și prin momentele în care aleg să fie vulnerabile. Astfel, relațiile dintre ele devin din ce în ce mai interesante, iar emoțiile pe care le simțim cresc odată cu povestea.
Un alt lucru pe care trebuie să-l menționez este stilul de scriere. Cartea este scrisă într-un mod foarte fluid și natural, iar paginile se citesc extrem de repede. Este genul de lectură la care îți spui „mai citesc doar un capitol”, iar apoi îți dai seama că au mai trecut câteva zeci de pagini. Povestea curge foarte bine, dialogurile sunt vii, iar combinația dintre romantism, umor și momentele mai emoționante m-a făcut să vreau mereu să aflu ce urmează.
„A doua viață a lui Joey Vasquez” a fost, pentru mine, o surpriză minunată și o lectură de cinci stele fără nicio ezitare. Este romantică, amuzantă și emoționantă, dar are și acel ceva care te face să închizi cartea și să rămâi puțin pe gânduri. Mi-a plăcut enorm că, dincolo de povestea de dragoste, cartea vorbește despre regrete, despre timpul pe care îl avem, despre oamenii pe care alegem să-i păstrăm aproape și despre curajul de a recunoaște că poate drumul pe care ni l-am imaginat ani de zile nu este, de fapt, cel care ne-ar face cei mai fericiți.
O recomand din toată inima celor care iubesc poveștile romantice cu emoție, personaje memorabile și puțină magie a unei a doua șanse. Este o carte despre iubire și destin, dar mai ales despre cât de greu, și cât de frumos, poate fi să descoperi cine ești și ce îți dorești cu adevărat. Iar uneori, poate că ai nevoie să pierzi o viață întreagă ca să înțelegi cum vrei să o trăiești pe următoarea.
Every Version of You – Natalie Messier
There are books you enjoy, books that move you, and then there are those books that manage to catch you completely by surprise and stay with you long after you’ve turned the final page. For me, „Every Version of You” by Natalie Messier was definitely one of those books. I absolutely loved it and, honestly, I wasn’t expecting Joey’s story to take me through so many different emotions. I smiled, got frustrated alongside the characters, felt excitement and nostalgia, and, on many occasions, simply stopped to reflect on my own life.
At first glance, Joey Vasquez seems to have everything she could possibly want. At thirty-two, she has a successful career as a lawyer, a house in Los Angeles, and is very close to becoming a partner at the firm where she works. Yet behind the image of a perfect life, Joey carries many regrets and feelings she has never had the courage to say out loud. One of the most important is her love for Elijah Aarons, her best friend—the man she has secretly loved for fourteen years and with whom she has imagined a future, perhaps more often than she has ever dared to admit.
Everything changes suddenly in November 2026, when Joey’s life comes to an end in a car accident on a Los Angeles freeway. Except, in a completely unexpected way, her story doesn’t end there. Joey is given a second chance and wakes up in September 2012, eighteen years old again, with all the memories of her first life intact. Suddenly, she is faced with something no one truly gets: the opportunity to relive certain moments and make different choices.
For Joey, the plan seems simple. She is convinced she has gone back in time to make things right and, above all, to make Elijah understand that the two of them are meant to be together. But life has other plans. Or perhaps life is actually trying to show her something Joey never wanted to see.
Because there is also Alex Aquino. Alex—the man who, in her first life, managed to get on her nerves for years and whom Joey considers, without much hesitation, one of the last people she would ever want to have around. And yet, in this second life, Alex once again becomes impossible to ignore. If his mere presence used to annoy her, he now seems to have an even greater talent for turning her world upside down. As if making her life difficult the first time around wasn’t enough, he now manages to leave her completely confused.
I really loved the way Joey and Alex’s relationship is developed. It isn’t simply a story about attraction or two people falling for each other, but about prejudices, the things we believe we know about others, and how much our past can influence the way we see the present. Joey thinks she knows exactly who Alex is, just as she believes she knows exactly what she wants from life. But as she gets the chance to know him again and relive certain moments, she begins to discover that sometimes we hold on to a particular version of someone without realizing that, in the meantime, we might be able to see something entirely different.
And I think that is one of the things I loved most about this book: it isn’t just about getting a second chance at love, but also about getting a second chance to understand yourself. Joey has the opportunity to see everything through the eyes of her thirty-two-year-old self while reliving the experiences of an eighteen-year-old girl. She knows where certain choices led her, she knows what she came to regret, and she knows—at least in theory—what she would like to change. But when you actually find yourself face-to-face with the same people and the same moments, things are never as simple as they seem.
This book really made me think. I often found myself wondering what I would do if I were given a chance like that. If I could go back to a certain moment in my life, what would I truly change? Which decisions would I make differently? Would I try to avoid my mistakes, or would I keep certain experiences, even if they were painful, because they helped me become the person I am today? Who would I choose to spend my time with, and who would I distance myself from? And perhaps the hardest question of all: how different would my life be if, at an important moment, I had chosen a different path?
I loved that these questions are not presented in a heavy or overly philosophical way. The book remains a romantic story, full of funny moments, tension, and emotion, but woven throughout it is the idea that life is not only about the big decisions. Sometimes, a conversation, a meeting, or the choice to stay by someone’s side a little longer can change the direction we are heading in without us even realizing it at the time.
I thought the characters were very well developed, and that is another reason why I found it so easy to immerse myself in the story. Joey isn’t a perfect character, and that is precisely why she felt so easy to understand. She has insecurities, regrets, and beliefs she clings to, even when reality begins to show her that she might be wrong. Elijah and Alex are not simply two options she has to choose between, but two people who each help her, in their own way, understand what she truly wants. As the story progresses, we learn more and more about them and about the relationships between the characters, and our first impressions gradually begin to change.
I really enjoyed this slow discovery of the characters. I never felt as though everything about them was explained in the very first pages. I got to know them step by step, through their reactions, their conversations, their mistakes, and the moments when they chose to be vulnerable. As a result, the relationships between them become increasingly interesting, and the emotions we feel grow alongside the story.
Another thing I have to mention is the writing style. The book is written in such a fluid and natural way, and the pages fly by incredibly quickly. It is the kind of book where you tell yourself, “I’ll just read one more chapter,” and then suddenly realize you’ve read several dozen more pages. The story flows beautifully, the dialogue feels lively, and the combination of romance, humor, and more emotional moments always made me want to find out what would happen next.
„Every Version of You” was, for me, a wonderful surprise and an easy five-star read. It is romantic, funny, and emotional, but it also has that special something that makes you close the book and sit with your thoughts for a while. I absolutely loved that, beyond the love story, the book explores regret, the time we are given, the people we choose to keep close, and the courage it takes to admit that perhaps the path we have imagined for ourselves for years is not actually the one that would make us happiest.
I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who loves emotional romance, memorable characters, and a little bit of second-chance magic. It is a book about love and destiny, but above all, about how difficult—and how beautiful—it can be to discover who you are and what you truly want. And sometimes, perhaps you need to lose an entire lifetime to understand how you want to live the next one.
