Am fost foarte curioasă să citesc „Fără ultimul cuvânt”, mai ales datorită combinației neașteptate dintre Reese Witherspoon, actriță multipremiată și una dintre cele mai cunoscute personalități din lumea filmului, și Harlan Coben, autorul care a cucerit milioane de cititori cu thrillerele sale pline de mister și răsturnări de situație. Tocmai de aceea, am început această carte cu așteptări destul de mari și cu mult entuziasm. Ideea unei colaborări între două nume atât de cunoscute mi s-a părut foarte interesantă, iar descrierea romanului promitea exact genul de poveste care, în mod normal, mă atrage: mister, pericol, conspirații și o protagonistă cu un trecut complicat.
În centrul poveștii se află Maggie McCabe, o fostă chirurgă a armatei, obișnuită să lucreze în cele mai dificile și periculoase condiții. După mai multe tragedii care îi schimbă complet viața și o lasă fără licența medicală, Maggie ajunge într-un punct în care pare că nu mai are prea multe opțiuni. Atunci primește o ofertă neașteptată: să devină medicul personal al unui multimiliardar misterios și controversat. La început, această oportunitate pare să îi ofere șansa unui nou început, însă lucrurile devin rapid mult mai periculoase decât și-ar fi imaginat.
Pe măsură ce Maggie începe să descopere tot mai multe despre lumea în care a intrat, apar indicii legate de o conspirație mult mai mare, care depășește cu mult problemele personale ale protagonistei. În poveste își face loc o rețea internațională de trafic de organe, iar Maggie începe să găsească legături între această afacere întunecată și moartea soțului ei. Din acel moment, ea nu mai este doar o femeie care încearcă să își refacă viața, ci devine o persoană prinsă într-un joc periculos, în care fiecare informație descoperită ar putea să o apropie de adevăr sau să o transforme în următoarea victimă.
Trebuie să recunosc că prima jumătate a cărții m-a prins foarte tare. Am citit-o cu mult interes și am avut senzația că pur și simplu vreau să aflu ce urmează. Mi-a plăcut foarte mult felul în care misterul era combinat cu teme actuale, precum dezvoltarea inteligenței artificiale, dar și cu partea de medicină. Mi s-a părut o combinație curajoasă și interesantă, iar faptul că acțiunea pornea de la întrebări care țineau atât de lumea medicală, cât și de tehnologia modernă, mi-a dat impresia că romanul are un potențial foarte mare. Maggie este și ea un personaj interesant: nu este perfectă, are greșelile și problemele ei, iar trecutul său o urmărește constant. Tocmai această parte mi s-a părut convingătoare și m-a făcut să îmi doresc să aflu unde va ajunge.
Din păcate, undeva în a doua jumătate a cărții am început să îmi pierd treptat interesul. Și chiar nu pot spune cu exactitate în ce moment s-a produs ruptura, pentru că am avut senzația că, de la un punct încolo, povestea a luat-o într-o direcție pe care nu am mai reușit să o urmăresc cu aceeași implicare. Au început să apară din ce în ce mai multe personaje, informații și fire narative noi, iar în loc ca misterele deja construite să înceapă să se lege și să primească explicații, pentru mine totul a devenit din ce în ce mai complicat.
La un moment dat, am avut impresia că nu mai știu exact ce citesc și care este, de fapt, legătura dintre toate elementele introduse. Unele personaje apar brusc, au un rol care pare important, iar apoi dispar aproape la fel de repede din acțiune. În alte situații, nu am mai înțeles foarte bine ce legături există între personaje sau de ce anumite informații sunt introduse tocmai în acel moment. În loc să simt că piesele puzzle-ului se așază treptat la locul lor, am avut impresia că autorii mai adaugă și alte piese, fără să îmi ofere suficient timp sau suficiente explicații pentru cele deja existente.
Acesta este, cred, cel mai mare motiv pentru care „Fără ultimul cuvânt” a rămas pentru mine o lectură de trei stele. Povestea are un început foarte bun, o premisă interesantă și câteva teme care mi-au stârnit cu adevărat curiozitatea. Am înțeles de ce romanul este prezentat ca un thriller alert și plin de tensiune, iar în prima parte chiar am simțit acea energie și acel ritm care te fac să mai citești încă un capitol. Totuși, pe parcurs, am simțit că povestea s-a pierdut în prea multe detalii și direcții. În încercarea de a construi o intrigă din ce în ce mai complexă, pentru mine lucrurile au ajuns să fie complicate mai degrabă inutil.
Per total, cred că este o carte care pornește cu mult potențial și cu o idee foarte atractivă, mai ales pentru cititorii care apreciază thrillerele medicale, conspirațiile și subiectele inspirate de problemele actuale. Am apreciat combinația dintre mister, medicină, tehnologie și pericol, precum și faptul că protagonista nu este o eroină perfectă. Dar, în cazul meu, entuziasmul de la început nu s-a păstrat până la final. Mi-aș fi dorit ca toate firele poveștii să fie mai clar dezvoltate și ca misterele să primească răspunsuri mai satisfăcătoare, nu să simt că, pe măsură ce mă apropiam de final, lucrurile deveneau tot mai greu de urmărit.
„Fără ultimul cuvânt” a fost, așadar, o lectură cu un început promițător, pe care am devorat-o cu plăcere, dar care m-a pierdut treptat pe drum. Nu regret că am citit-o și cred că are elemente care vor funcționa foarte bine pentru alți cititori, însă pentru mine povestea nu a reușit să își păstreze forța până la ultima pagină. Tocmai de aceea îi ofer acest punctaj: o idee foarte bună și o primă jumătate captivantă, dar o dezvoltare care, din punctul meu de vedere, s-a complicat prea mult și nu a reușit să ofere claritatea și satisfacția pe care le așteptam de la final.

I was very curious to read „Gone Before Goodbye”, especially because of the unexpected collaboration between Reese Witherspoon, an award-winning actress and one of the most recognizable figures in the film industry, and Harlan Coben, an author who has captivated millions of readers with his mystery-filled thrillers and unexpected twists. For that reason, I started this book with fairly high expectations and a lot of enthusiasm. The idea of a collaboration between two such well-known names seemed very interesting to me, and the description of the novel promised exactly the kind of story that normally appeals to me: mystery, danger, conspiracies, and a protagonist with a complicated past.
At the center of the story is Maggie McCabe, a former army surgeon who is used to working under the most difficult and dangerous conditions. After several tragedies completely change her life and leave her without her medical license, Maggie reaches a point where it seems she has very few options left. Then she receives an unexpected offer: to become the personal doctor of a mysterious and controversial billionaire. At first, this opportunity seems to offer her the chance for a fresh start, but things quickly become far more dangerous than she ever imagined.
As Maggie begins to discover more and more about the world she has entered, clues emerge about a much larger conspiracy that goes far beyond the protagonist’s personal problems. An international organ-trafficking network becomes part of the story, and Maggie begins to uncover connections between this dark operation and her husband’s death. From that moment on, she is no longer just a woman trying to rebuild her life, but someone caught in a dangerous game in which every piece of information she discovers could either bring her closer to the truth or turn her into the next victim.
I have to admit that the first half of the book completely drew me in. I read it with great interest and constantly felt like I simply wanted to find out what would happen next. I really liked the way the mystery was combined with current themes, such as the development of artificial intelligence, as well as with the medical aspect of the story. It seemed like a bold and interesting combination, and the fact that the plot was built around questions connected both to the medical world and modern technology gave me the impression that the novel had a great deal of potential. Maggie is also an interesting character: she is not perfect, she has her own mistakes and problems, and her past constantly follows her. That was precisely the aspect that I found convincing and that made me want to see where her journey would lead.
Unfortunately, somewhere in the second half of the book, I gradually began to lose interest. And I honestly cannot say exactly when the disconnect happened, because I had the feeling that, at some point, the story took a direction that I could no longer follow with the same level of engagement. More and more characters, pieces of information, and new plot threads started to appear, and instead of the mysteries that had already been established beginning to come together and receive explanations, everything became increasingly complicated for me.
At one point, I felt as though I no longer knew exactly what I was reading or what the connection between all the elements being introduced actually was. Some characters appear suddenly, seem to play an important role, and then disappear from the story almost as quickly as they arrived. In other situations, I could no longer clearly understand the relationships between certain characters or why particular pieces of information were being introduced at that specific moment. Instead of feeling as though the pieces of the puzzle were gradually falling into place, I had the impression that the authors kept adding more pieces without giving me enough time or enough explanation to understand the ones that were already there.
I think this is the main reason why „Gone Before Goodbye” ended up being a three-star read for me. The story has a very strong beginning, an interesting premise, and several themes that genuinely sparked my curiosity. I could understand why the novel is presented as a fast-paced and suspenseful thriller, and in the first part I truly felt that energy and momentum that make you want to read just one more chapter. However, as the story progressed, I felt that it became lost in too many details and directions. In its attempt to build an increasingly complex plot, things ultimately became unnecessarily complicated for me.
Overall, I think this is a book that starts with a lot of potential and a very appealing idea, especially for readers who enjoy medical thrillers, conspiracies, and stories inspired by contemporary issues. I appreciated the combination of mystery, medicine, technology, and danger, as well as the fact that the protagonist is not a perfect heroine. But in my case, the enthusiasm I felt at the beginning did not last until the end. I would have liked all the storylines to be developed more clearly and the mysteries to receive more satisfying answers, rather than feeling that, as I got closer to the ending, everything became increasingly difficult to follow.
„Gone Before Goodbye” was therefore a read with a promising beginning that I devoured with pleasure but that gradually lost me along the way. I do not regret reading it, and I believe it has elements that will work very well for other readers, but for me, the story did not manage to maintain its strength until the very last page. That is why I am giving it this rating: a very good idea and a captivating first half, but a development that, in my opinion, became too complicated and failed to provide the clarity and satisfaction I had hoped for from the ending.
