My Friends – Fredrik Backman

“My Friends” by Fredrik Backman is the kind of book that starts as a story about a few people and somehow, without you even realizing it, becomes a story about you, too. It is a book about friendship, childhood, and those seemingly small moments that, years later, come to mean so much. I really loved it, and it felt like one of those reads that moves you without ever forcing the emotion. In a way, it is exactly the kind of story I expected to find in a Fredrik Backman novel: warm, sad, funny at times, and, above all, deeply human.

At the center of the story is Louisa, a girl who grew up without the stability and safety that every child should have. She went through difficult foster families and care homes, and life did not give her many reasons to believe in people or in the future. Yet there is one thing she holds on to: a simple postcard featuring a reproduction of one of the world’s most famous and valuable paintings. For Louisa, this image means more than just a work of art. It is almost a promise, a connection to something beautiful in a life where beauty has not always been easy to find.

The day before she turns eighteen, Louisa decides to do something that might seem crazy: sneak into an art auction, simply to see with her own eyes the painting she has known for so long through that postcard. I really loved this moment because it says so much about her. Behind the girl who seems lonely and vulnerable is, in fact, someone who still has the courage to dream. And sometimes, when you do not have many things left in life, a single dream can come to mean everything.

At the same time, Backman takes us twenty-five years into the past, to a seaside town where a group of teenagers is spending their last summer together. They are young, loud, curious, and a little rebellious, just as teenagers are when they feel like the whole world belongs to them, even though each of them carries their own fears and wounds inside. They laugh together, get into little adventures, challenge one another, and tell each other things they could never say to just anyone. At the same time, each of them is dealing with problems and trauma that are far too heavy for their age.

I found the way the friendship between these teenagers is portrayed incredibly beautiful. It is not a perfect friendship, nor is it free of conflict. On the contrary, it is sometimes messy, impulsive, and painful. But it is real. They are the kind of friends who get to know you at a time when you do not even know who you are yet, and because of that, they end up having a special place in the story of your life. They give each other courage when one of them has none left, support each other when everything seems lost, and, most importantly, choose to believe in one another.

From this summer comes the painting that will eventually become known around the world, and art thus becomes the connection between two generations and between people who, at first glance, would seem to have nothing in common. Louisa’s story gradually begins to connect with the story of those teenagers by the sea, and the two narrative threads come together in a surprising way. I really loved this aspect because Backman manages to turn something as simple as a postcard into a bridge between the past and the present.

But for me, the true beauty of the book does not lie only in the mystery of the painting or in the way the two stories come together. “My Friends” is, above all, a book about what remains inside us after people and places change. It is about those periods of our lives that, while we are living them, we may not appreciate enough, but that we later look back on with an overwhelming sense of nostalgia. Childhood and adolescence have something almost magical about the way we experience them together with our friends. An ordinary day can become, years later, one of the most important memories we have.

The book also talks about pain, loss, and all the hardships that life brings without asking whether we are ready for them. This is not a story where everything gets resolved simply and beautifully. There is suffering, disappointment, and moments when happiness seems very small and very difficult to find. That is precisely why those few moments of joy become so important. Backman reminds us that sometimes we do not need a perfect life to be happy. Sometimes, all we need is a few people who are there for us.

Another thing that stayed with me is how much it can matter when someone believes in you. There are moments when we ourselves can no longer see anything good in what we do or in who we are. Then, a friend who says, “I believe in you” can change everything. True friends are not only the people we laugh and have fun with, but also the ones who remind us who we are when we have forgotten. And this idea is portrayed beautifully in the book.

For me, “My Friends” is especially a story about childhood and about the way the people we meet during those years can go on to influence our entire lives. There are friendships that do not necessarily last forever, but that does not mean they were not important forever. There are summers, conversations, laughter, little adventures, secrets, and seemingly insignificant moments that become so deeply imprinted in our memories that we return to them again and again. Sometimes, our entire adult lives seem to be built around a handful of unique moments we once experienced with the right people.

I felt so much of the emotion that is characteristic of Backman’s novels in this book. He has this way of talking about difficult things in simple language, without turning the story into something overwhelmingly heavy. He manages to blend sadness with moments of humor and tenderness, and the characters end up feeling very close to us. They are not perfect, they do not always make the best decisions, and they do not always know how to fix their lives. But it is precisely their imperfections that make them so easy to understand and love.

I absolutely loved this book, and I think it is one of those reads that stays with you even after you have turned the final page. It made me think about childhood friendships, about the people who encouraged me, about the things I once dreamed of, and about those moments that I did not realize at the time would become such precious memories. It is a story about art, but also about people. About the past, but also about the way the past continues to live inside us. About suffering, but also about the few moments of happiness that help us keep moving forward.

If I had to describe “My Friends” in a single idea, I would say that it is a book about the people who teach us to dream and about the memories that shape us. It is emotional, nostalgic, and incredibly sincere, and for me, it was a five-star read. Fredrik Backman once again proves that he does not need complicated stories to talk about important things. Sometimes, it is enough to remind us how much a friendship, a dream, and a moment when someone chose to believe in us can truly mean.
