Am început „Băiatul din pădure” cu așteptări destul de mari. Harlan Coben este unul dintre autorii de thrillere pe care îi citesc cu plăcere, iar până acum majoritatea cărților lui au reușit să mă țină cu sufletul la gură. Nu degeaba este considerat unul dintre adevărații maeștri ai suspansului, pentru că știe foarte bine cum să construiască mistere și să transforme disparițiile în povești care te fac să întorci pagină după pagină. Din păcate, de această dată experiența mea de lectură nu a fost chiar cea la care mă așteptam.
Povestea îl are în centrul atenției pe Wilde, un personaj cu un trecut cu totul neobișnuit. În copilărie a fost găsit trăind singur în pădure, fără să știe nimeni cine este sau cum a ajuns acolo. Chiar și ca adult, pădurea rămâne locul în care se simte cel mai bine, iar felul în care se deplasează, își observă adversarii și analizează fiecare situație amintește de un adevărat prădător. Este calculat, atent și preferă să afle cât mai multe despre cei pe care îi urmărește înainte de a acționa. Pregătirea lui militară și abilitățile dezvoltate de-a lungul vieții îl transformă într-un personaj diferit de detectivii clasici din thrillere.
Totul începe în momentul în care Naomi, o adolescentă marginalizată și hărțuită de colegii de școală, dispare fără urmă. Hester Crimstein, celebra avocată cunoscută pentru personalitatea ei puternică și pentru faptul că nu se teme să spună lucrurilor pe nume, îi cere ajutorul lui Wilde pentru a o găsi. Ancheta pare inițial destul de simplă, însă lucrurile se complică rapid, iar dispariția fetei scoate la iveală o mulțime de secrete ascunse. Curând, cazul ajunge să implice oameni influenți, politicieni, interese ascunse și o înregistrare pentru care cineva este dispus să facă orice pentru a o recupera, chiar dacă asta înseamnă răpiri și vieți puse în pericol.
Mi-a plăcut foarte mult premisa romanului. Ideea unui copil crescut în pădure, care ajunge ulterior să investigheze dispariția unor adolescenți, mi s-a părut extrem de interesantă și promitea un thriller diferit de cele pe care le citisem până acum. Primele capitole mi-au stârnit curiozitatea, iar misterele introduse m-au făcut să vreau să aflu ce s-a întâmplat cu Naomi și cum se leagă toate piesele acestui puzzle.
Din păcate, pe măsură ce povestea a avansat, entuziasmul meu a început să scadă. Mi-a fost destul de greu să mă conectez cu personajele și, chiar dacă fiecare avea un rol important în desfășurarea acțiunii, nu am simțit că am ajuns să le cunosc suficient de bine sau să mă implic emoțional în poveștile lor. Wilde este, fără îndoială, un personaj interesant și diferit, însă am simțit că a rămas destul de rece și distant, iar acest lucru m-a făcut să urmăresc evenimentele mai degrabă cu interes decât cu implicare.
Un alt aspect care m-a făcut să citesc mai greu a fost numărul mare de fire narative și schimbările dese de perspectivă. Harlan Coben obișnuiește să construiască povești complexe, în care totul se leagă la final, însă de această dată am avut impresia că sunt prea multe informații și prea multe personaje introduse într-un timp scurt. De multe ori simțeam că trebuie să mă opresc și să îmi amintesc cine este fiecare personaj și cum se leagă de anchetă, iar acest lucru a afectat ritmul lecturii pentru mine.
Mi-a plăcut faptul că autorul abordează și teme actuale, precum bullying-ul, influența rețelelor sociale, puterea mass-mediei, corupția și modul în care oamenii influenți pot ascunde adevărul în spatele imaginii perfecte. Aceste subiecte oferă poveștii un aer realist și arată că, dincolo de disparițiile care reprezintă punctul central al romanului, există și o critică subtilă la adresa societății moderne.
Finalul reușește să lege majoritatea misterelor și oferă explicații pentru multe dintre întrebările apărute pe parcurs. Au existat câteva răsturnări de situație care m-au surprins și care mi-au amintit de stilul caracteristic al lui Harlan Coben. Totuși, până să ajung acolo, am simțit că drumul a fost mai lung decât mi-aș fi dorit, iar tensiunea nu s-a menținut constant pe tot parcursul cărții.
Per total, „Băiatul din pădure” a fost o lectură decentă, dar care nu s-a ridicat la nivelul așteptărilor pe care le aveam de la acest autor. Ideea de la care pornește romanul este foarte captivantă, iar misterul construit în jurul lui Wilde și al dispariției adolescenților promite foarte mult. Cu toate acestea, modul în care este dezvoltată povestea nu a fost în totalitate pe gustul meu, iar lipsa unei conexiuni cu personajele și complexitatea firelor narative m-au făcut să nu mă bucur de această carte la fel de mult ca de alte romane scrise de Harlan Coben. Nu a fost o lectură rea, însă nici una memorabilă pentru mine, motiv pentru care îi ofer 3 din 5 stele.

I started „The Boy from the Woods” with fairly high expectations. Harlan Coben is one of those thriller authors I always enjoy reading, and most of his books have managed to keep me on the edge of my seat. It’s no surprise that he’s considered one of the true masters of suspense, as he knows exactly how to build intriguing mysteries and turn disappearances into stories that keep you turning the pages. Unfortunately, this time my reading experience wasn’t quite what I had hoped for.
The story follows Wilde, a character with a truly unusual past. As a child, he was found living alone in the woods, with no one knowing who he was or how he had ended up there. Even as an adult, the forest remains the place where he feels most at home. The way he moves, observes his opponents, and analyzes every situation makes him resemble a true predator. He is methodical, cautious, and prefers to learn as much as possible about the people he is tracking before taking action. His military training and the survival skills he has developed throughout his life make him very different from the typical detectives usually found in thrillers.
Everything begins when Naomi, a teenage girl who has been bullied and isolated by her classmates, suddenly disappears without a trace. Hester Crimstein, the renowned attorney known for her strong personality and fearless honesty, asks Wilde to help find her. At first, the investigation seems fairly straightforward, but things quickly become far more complicated as Naomi’s disappearance uncovers a web of long-hidden secrets. Before long, the case draws in influential people, politicians, hidden agendas, and a recording that someone is willing to do absolutely anything to recover—even if it means kidnapping and putting innocent lives in danger.
I really liked the novel’s premise. The idea of a child who grew up in the woods and later becomes involved in investigating the disappearance of teenagers felt incredibly original and promised a thriller unlike any I had read before. The opening chapters immediately caught my attention, and the mysteries introduced early on made me eager to discover what had happened to Naomi and how all the pieces of the puzzle would eventually fit together.
Unfortunately, as the story progressed, my enthusiasm gradually began to fade. I found it difficult to connect with the characters and, although each of them played an important role in the plot, I never felt like I truly got to know them or became emotionally invested in their stories. Wilde is undoubtedly an interesting and unique protagonist, but he remained quite distant and emotionally reserved throughout the novel, which made me follow the events with curiosity rather than genuine emotional involvement.
Another aspect that slowed down my reading was the large number of storylines and the constant shifts in perspective. Harlan Coben is known for crafting complex plots where everything eventually comes together, but this time I felt there were simply too many characters and too much information introduced in a relatively short amount of time. I often found myself having to stop and remember who each character was and how they were connected to the investigation, which affected the overall pacing of the reading experience for me.
I did appreciate the fact that the author explores several timely themes, including bullying, the influence of social media, the power of the media, corruption, and the ways influential people can hide the truth behind carefully crafted public images. These topics give the story a realistic feel and show that, beyond the disappearances at the center of the novel, there is also a subtle critique of modern society.
The ending successfully ties together most of the mysteries and provides satisfying explanations for many of the questions raised throughout the story. There were a few twists that genuinely surprised me and reminded me why Harlan Coben is so well known for his suspenseful storytelling. Even so, I felt that the journey to reach that conclusion was longer than I would have liked, and the tension wasn’t maintained consistently throughout the book.
Overall, „The Boy from the Woods” was a decent read, but it didn’t quite live up to the expectations I had for this author. The central premise is highly compelling, and the mystery surrounding Wilde and the missing teenagers holds a great deal of promise. However, the way the story unfolds wasn’t entirely to my taste, and my lack of connection with the characters, combined with the complexity of the multiple storylines, prevented me from enjoying this novel as much as some of Harlan Coben’s other books. It certainly wasn’t a bad read, but it wasn’t a particularly memorable one for me either, which is why I’m giving it 3 out of 5 stars.
