„Ultima ei suflare” de Hilary Davidson a fost pentru mine un thriller care a pornit foarte bine și care m-a făcut să cred că voi descoperi o poveste tensionată și plină de răsturnări de situație. Ideea din spatele cărții mi s-a părut foarte interesantă încă de la început: o femeie moare într-un presupus accident, însă înainte trimite un mesaj în care spune clar că, dacă i se întâmplă ceva, nu va fi o simplă întâmplare. Premisa aceasta mi s-a părut extrem de captivantă și chiar m-a făcut să vreau să aflu adevărul cât mai repede.
Povestea o urmărește pe Deirdre, sora lui Caroline, o femeie care a fost mereu considerată „oaia neagră” a familiei. Spre deosebire de sora ei aparent perfectă, Deirdre este rebelă, plină de tatuaje și obișnuită să fie judecată de cei din jur. După moartea neașteptată a lui Caroline, ea primește un mesaj trimis de aceasta înainte să moară, în care îi spune că, dacă va muri, sigur a fost ucisă. Din acel moment, Deirdre pornește spre Manhattan pentru înmormântare, însă ajunge rapid prinsă într-o adevărată rețea de minciuni, secrete și suspiciuni.
Mi-a plăcut mult modul în care autoarea a construit atmosfera de mister. Theo, soțul lui Caroline, este genul de personaj pe care nu știi niciodată dacă să îl compătimești sau să îl suspectezi. Faptul că asupra lui planează deja umbre legate de moartea primei sale soții face totul și mai tensionat. În plus, apar tot felul de indicii despre posibile aventuri, conflicte și resentimente ascunse, iar asta te face să privești fiecare personaj cu neîncredere. Cred că acesta a fost unul dintre punctele forte ale cărții: aproape toți păreau capabili de ceva rău, iar misterul a fost construit suficient de bine încât să mă facă să îi suspectez pe toți pe rând.
Deirdre mi s-a părut un personaj interesant și destul de diferit față de protagonistele clasice din thrillere. Este impulsivă, încăpățânată și uneori chiar paranoică, dar tocmai defectele acestea au făcut-o să pară mai reală. Pe măsură ce începe să scoată la lumină adevăruri îngropate odată cu sora ei, realizează că nu doar Caroline ascundea secrete, ci și restul familiei. Iar cu cât se apropie mai mult de adevăr, cu atât simte că propria viață îi este pusă în pericol.
Cu toate acestea, deși cartea m-a prins și am vrut să aflu cum se termină, am avut și câteva probleme cu ea. Simt că povestea avea un potențial mult mai mare decât ceea ce a oferit în final. Pe parcurs, autoarea introduce foarte multe fire narative, multe intrigi și multe detalii care par create special pentru a menține tensiunea constantă. Doar că, pentru mine, uneori efectul a fost exact opusul. În loc să mă țină complet captivă, anumite momente au făcut acțiunea să pară prea încărcată și puțin obositoare. Au existat situații în care am simțit că povestea se pierde în prea multe explicații și complicații inutile, iar asta m-a făcut de câteva ori să-mi pierd răbdarea.
Chiar și așa, nu pot spune că nu mi-a plăcut cartea. Ideea de bază este foarte bună, atmosfera este tensionată, iar misterul funcționează suficient de bine încât să te facă să continui lectura. Personajele sunt construite atent și învăluite în destul mister încât să nu știi niciodată în cine să ai încredere. Doar că, pentru mine, povestea ar fi avut un impact mult mai mare dacă ar fi fost mai concentrată și dacă nu încerca atât de mult să complice fiecare situație.
Per total, „Ultima ei suflare” a fost un thriller bun, cu o premisă puternică și personaje interesante, dar care, din păcate, s-a pierdut uneori în prea multe detalii și răsturnări de situație. O lectură care merită încercată dacă vă plac thrillerele de familie pline de secrete și suspiciuni, chiar dacă pentru mine nu a reușit să își atingă complet potențialul.
Her Last Breath – Hilary Davidson
„Her Last Breath” by Hilary Davidson was, for me, a thriller that started off very strong and made me believe I was about to discover a tense story full of twists and turns. The idea behind the book immediately caught my attention: a woman dies in what appears to be an accident, but before her death she sends a message clearly stating that if anything happens to her, it will not be an accident. I found this premise extremely compelling, and it instantly made me want to uncover the truth as quickly as possible.
The story follows Deirdre, Caroline’s sister, a woman who has always been considered the “black sheep” of the family. Unlike her seemingly perfect sister, Deirdre is rebellious, covered in tattoos, and used to being judged by those around her. After Caroline’s unexpected death, she receives a message Caroline sent before dying, telling her that if she ends up dead, she was definitely murdered. From that moment on, Deirdre heads to Manhattan for the funeral, only to quickly become trapped in a web of lies, secrets, and suspicions.
I really liked the way the author built the atmosphere of mystery. Theo, Caroline’s husband, is the kind of character you never know whether to pity or suspect. The fact that he is already surrounded by shadows connected to the death of his first wife makes everything even more tense. On top of that, there are constant hints about possible affairs, conflicts, and hidden resentments, which makes you distrust every single character. I think this was one of the book’s strongest points: almost everyone seemed capable of doing something terrible, and the mystery was constructed well enough to make me suspect each of them one by one.
Deirdre felt like an interesting character and quite different from the typical thriller protagonists. She is impulsive, stubborn, and sometimes even paranoid, but those flaws are exactly what made her feel more realistic. As she starts uncovering truths buried alongside her sister, she realizes that not only Caroline was hiding secrets, but the rest of the family as well. And the closer she gets to the truth, the more she feels that her own life is in danger.
Even so, although the book kept me interested and made me want to know how it would end, I also had a few issues with it. I feel like the story had much greater potential than what it ultimately delivered. Throughout the novel, the author introduces many subplots, intrigues, and details that seem specifically designed to maintain constant tension. But for me, the effect was sometimes the exact opposite. Instead of keeping me fully captivated, certain moments made the story feel overly crowded and somewhat exhausting. There were times when I felt the plot got lost in too many explanations and unnecessary complications, and that occasionally tested my patience.
Still, I can’t say I didn’t enjoy the book. The core idea is very strong, the atmosphere is tense, and the mystery works well enough to keep you turning the pages. The characters are carefully developed and wrapped in enough secrecy that you never really know who to trust. I just think the story would have had a much stronger impact if it had been more focused and hadn’t tried so hard to complicate every situation.
Overall, „Her Last Breath” was a solid thriller with a strong premise and interesting characters, but unfortunately it sometimes got lost in too many details and plot twists. It’s a book worth trying if you enjoy family thrillers filled with secrets and suspicion, even if, for me, it never fully reached its potential.
