„Deținutul” de Freida McFadden a fost pentru mine genul acela de thriller pe care îl citești foarte repede, chiar dacă ai impresia, pe parcurs, că începi să înțelegi unde se îndreaptă povestea. Deși anumite momente mi s-au părut previzibile, cartea a reușit să mă țină prinsă între paginile ei datorită atmosferei tensionate și a felului în care autoarea construiește suspansul. De fiecare dată când credeam că am descoperit adevărul, apărea un nou detaliu care mă făcea să mă îndoiesc din nou de toate personajele.
Povestea o urmărește pe Brooke Sullivan, o asistentă medicală care începe să lucreze într-o închisoare de maximă securitate. Încă de la început simți că locul acela este apăsător și plin de pericole, iar Brooke pare mereu în gardă. Situația devine și mai complicată când aflăm că unul dintre deținuți este chiar Shane Nelson, fostul ei iubit din liceu, condamnat pe viață pentru crime îngrozitoare. Brooke este cea care a contribuit la condamnarea lui prin mărturia oferită în trecut, iar acum trebuie să îl privească din nou în ochi, într-un loc din care nimeni nu pare să poată scăpa cu adevărat.
Mi-a plăcut foarte mult felul în care Freida McFadden alternează prezentul cu amintirile din trecut. Relația dintre Brooke și Shane este construită treptat, iar fiecare capitol adaugă câte o piesă nouă din puzzle. Shane apare când vulnerabil și sincer, când rece și imposibil de citit, iar asta m-a făcut să mă întreb constant dacă este cu adevărat vinovat sau dacă Brooke a condamnat persoana greșită. Tocmai această incertitudine face ca povestea să fie atât de captivantă.
Un lucru care mi s-a părut foarte bine realizat a fost modul în care autoarea transformă fiecare personaj într-un posibil suspect. Nimeni nu pare complet sincer, fiecare ascunde ceva, iar atmosfera este încărcată de secrete și minciuni. Chiar dacă am avut senzația că pot anticipa unele întorsături, adevărata identitate a personajului negativ m-a surprins sincer. Nu m-am gândit deloc la acea variantă, iar finalul a reușit să schimbe complet imaginea pe care mi-o formasem despre anumite personaje.
Brooke mi s-a părut un personaj interesant, deși uneori am simțit că ia decizii impulsive. Totuși, frica ei, nesiguranța și dorința de a afla adevărul au făcut-o ușor de înțeles. De cealaltă parte, Shane este genul de personaj construit special ca să te facă să oscilezi între teamă și compasiune. Când crezi că îl înțelegi, apare imediat ceva care îți schimbă complet părerea despre el.
Per total, „Deținutul” a fost o lectură tensionată și ușor de parcurs, perfectă pentru fanii thrillerelor psihologice. Nu este cea mai surprinzătoare carte pe care am citit-o, însă stilul alert, misterul constant și personajele bine conturate au făcut experiența foarte plăcută. Este genul de carte care te face să citești „încă un capitol”, iar apoi realizezi că ai ajuns deja la final.

„The Inmate” by Freida McFadden was, for me, the kind of thriller you read incredibly fast, even when, along the way, you start to feel like you understand where the story is heading. Although some moments felt predictable to me, the book still managed to keep me hooked because of its tense atmosphere and the way the author builds suspense. Every time I thought I had figured out the truth, a new detail appeared that made me doubt all the characters once again.
The story follows Brooke Sullivan, a nurse who starts working at a maximum-security prison. From the very beginning, you can feel how oppressive and dangerous that place is, and Brooke always seems to be on edge. Things become even more complicated when we learn that one of the inmates is Shane Nelson, her former high school boyfriend, who is serving a life sentence for horrific crimes. Brooke was the one who helped convict him through the testimony she gave years earlier, and now she has to look him in the eye again in a place that feels impossible to truly escape from.
I really liked the way Freida McFadden alternates between the present and memories from the past. Brooke and Shane’s relationship is developed gradually, and each chapter adds another piece to the puzzle. Shane sometimes appears vulnerable and sincere, and other times cold and impossible to read, which constantly made me question whether he was truly guilty or whether Brooke had condemned the wrong person. That uncertainty is exactly what makes the story so captivating.
One thing I thought was very well done was the way the author turns every character into a possible suspect. No one seems completely honest, everyone is hiding something, and the atmosphere is filled with secrets and lies. Even though I had the feeling I could predict some of the twists, the true identity of the villain genuinely surprised me. I never considered that possibility, and the ending completely changed the image I had formed of certain characters.
Brooke felt like an interesting character to me, even though at times I thought she made impulsive decisions. Still, her fear, insecurity, and desire to uncover the truth made her easy to understand. On the other hand, Shane is the kind of character specifically written to make you constantly shift between fear and sympathy. Just when you think you understand him, something immediately happens that changes your entire opinion of him.
Overall, „The Inmate” was a tense and fast-paced read, perfect for fans of psychological thrillers. It is not the most surprising book I have ever read, but the quick pacing, constant mystery, and well-developed characters made the experience very enjoyable. It is the kind of book that makes you say “just one more chapter,” only to realize you have already reached the end.
