„Truly Madly Deeply” de L.J. Shen este genul de carte care m-a atras încă de la primele pagini prin intensitatea emoțiilor și prin dinamica dintre personaje. Este o poveste de dragoste complicată, cu accente de dark romance, în care trecutul nu poate fi lăsat în urmă, iar sentimentele revin mai puternice decât înainte.
Povestea o urmărește pe Calla Litvin, care, după ani în care a încercat să fugă de amintiri dureroase, se întoarce acasă, în Staindrop. Întoarcerea ei nu este deloc liniștită, pentru că îl reîntâlnește pe Ambrose „Row” Casablancas, bărbatul pe care nu a reușit niciodată să-l uite. Între ei există un trecut intens, marcat de o noapte care le-a schimbat complet relația și pe care Calla a încercat ani la rând să o șteargă din minte. Doar că unele lucruri nu pot fi uitate, mai ales când persoana respectivă apare din nou în viața ta.
Ambrose este un personaj care mi s-a părut foarte bine construit: un chef celebru, obișnuit să dețină controlul asupra fiecărui aspect din viața lui. Este rece, sigur pe el, uneori chiar arogant, dar în spatele acestei imagini se ascunde mult mai mult. Calla, pe de altă parte, este opusul lui: imprevizibilă, uneori stângace, dar autentică și plină de emoție. Ea este una dintre puținele persoane care l-au văzut cu adevărat pe Ambrose, dincolo de mască, iar acest lucru creează între ei o legătură greu de ignorat.
Reîntâlnirea lor aduce cu sine o tensiune puternică. Calla ajunge să depindă de el într-un moment dificil din viața ei, când are nevoie de stabilitate și de o nouă șansă. Însă apropierea dintre ei reaprinde rapid sentimentele vechi. Atracția este intensă, aproape imposibil de controlat, iar relația lor devine un joc periculos între dorință și frică, între trecut și prezent. Am simțit constant că orice moment liniștit poate exploda, iar asta m-a ținut captivă în poveste.
Mi-a plăcut foarte mult cum autoarea a construit această relație. Nu este una simplă sau idealizată, este complicată, uneori dureroasă, dar tocmai acest lucru o face să pară reală. Personajele vin cu traume, cu regrete și cu greșeli, iar felul în care acestea le influențează alegerile este foarte bine conturat. Mi-a fost ușor să empatizez cu ei, pentru că nu sunt perfecți, ci vulnerabili și umani.
Un alt lucru care mi-a atras atenția este modul în care povestea combină pasiunea cu partea emoțională. Nu este doar o poveste despre atracție, ci despre dependență emoțională, despre dorința de a fi văzut și acceptat exact așa cum ești. Relația lor este intensă, uneori haotică, dar și profundă, iar acest contrast mi s-a părut foarte bine realizat.
Per total, mi-a plăcut această carte pentru chimia dintre personaje și pentru felul în care au fost construite. Faptul că fiecare are un trecut dificil, care încă îi afectează, face ca povestea lor să fie mult mai credibilă și mai ușor de simțit. Este o lectură care te prinde prin emoții și tensiune, chiar dacă nu este lipsită de imperfecțiuni, motiv pentru care, pentru mine, rămâne o lectură de patru stele.

The story follows Calla Litvin, who, after years of trying to run from painful memories, returns home to Staindrop. Her return is anything but peaceful, as she reunites with Ambrose “Row” Casablancas, the man she has never managed to forget. There is a powerful past between them, marked by a night that completely changed their relationship—one that Calla has spent years trying to erase from her mind. But some things can’t be forgotten, especially when that person reappears in your life.
Ambrose is a character I found very well built: a famous chef, used to being in control of every aspect of his life. He is cold, confident, sometimes even arrogant, but behind that image lies so much more. Calla, on the other hand, is his opposite: unpredictable, sometimes clumsy, yet genuine and full of emotion. She is one of the few people who has truly seen Ambrose beyond the mask, and that creates a bond between them that is impossible to ignore.
Their reunion brings with it a strong tension. Calla ends up depending on him during a difficult moment in her life, when she needs stability and a fresh start. But their closeness quickly reignites old feelings. The attraction is intense, almost impossible to control, and their relationship becomes a dangerous game between desire and fear, between past and present. I constantly felt like any quiet moment could explode, and that kept me completely hooked.
I really loved the way the author built this relationship. It’s not simple or idealized—it’s complicated, sometimes painful, and that’s exactly what makes it feel real. The characters come with trauma, regrets, and mistakes, and the way these shape their choices is very well portrayed. It was easy for me to empathize with them because they are not perfect—they are vulnerable and human.
Another aspect that stood out to me is how the story blends passion with emotional depth. It’s not just about attraction, but about emotional dependence, about the need to be seen and accepted exactly as you are. Their relationship is intense, sometimes chaotic, but also deep, and I found this contrast very well executed.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book for the chemistry between the characters and the way they were developed. The fact that both carry difficult pasts that still affect them makes their story feel much more believable and impactful. It’s a read that grips you through emotion and tension, even if it’s not without flaws—which is why, for me, it remains a solid four-star read.
