„Privește-mă” de Tahereh Mafi mi-a dat senzația aceea rară de „acasă”, pentru că m-am întors într-un univers pe care l-am iubit enorm, având în vedere că am devorat seria „Atingerea lui Juliette”. A fost genul de carte pe care am început-o cu entuziasm și pe care am citit-o repede, dar cu grijă, tocmai pentru că voiam să mai stau puțin în lumea aceea tensionată și fascinantă. Se simte ca un nou început, dar în același timp păstrează atmosfera cunoscută: pericol constant, emoții intense și întrebări grele despre identitate și libertate.
Acțiunea este plină de energie și suspans, iar ritmul nu te lasă deloc să respiri. Povestea îl urmărește pe James Anderson, fratele mai mic al lui Warner, care reușește ceva aproape imposibil: să se infiltreze pe Insula Ark, un loc misterios și extrem de bine păzit, considerat ultimul bastion al Restaurației. Chiar dacă ajunge direct într-o celulă, pentru el asta este tot o victorie. Mi-a plăcut mult curajul lui, dar și faptul că nu este eroul clasic. Are momente de nesiguranță, glumește chiar și în cele mai tensionate situații și pare mereu prins între dorința de a demonstra ceva și nevoia de a înțelege cine este cu adevărat.
În paralel, o descoperim pe Rosabelle Wolff, un personaj care m-a intrigat foarte mult. Ea este opusul lui James în multe feluri: calculată, rece, mereu atentă la reguli și la ordine. Trăiește într-un loc unde fiecare emoție este controlată, iar slăbiciunea nu este permisă. Mi s-a părut fascinant cum, încet-încet, apar fisuri în armura ei și cum începe să se confrunte cu propriile sentimente. Relația dintre ea și James se construiește lent, cu tensiune și ezitări, iar povestea lor de dragoste este una de tip slow burn, care te ține în priză și te face să simți fiecare pas înainte… și fiecare pas înapoi.
Un lucru care mi-a plăcut mult a fost să văd ce s-a întâmplat în lume după evenimentele din seria originală. Se simte clar că rebeliunea a schimbat multe, iar progresul este vizibil, dar în același timp pericolul nu a dispărut complet. Restaurația nu este înfrântă definitiv și pregătește o lovitură serioasă. Mi s-a părut interesant cum autoarea arată că victoria nu înseamnă sfârșitul luptei, ci doar începutul unei alte etape.
Un alt punct forte pentru mine au fost dialogurile, mai ales cele ale lui James. Are un umor acid și replici foarte naturale, care aduc un echilibru perfect între tensiune și momente mai relaxate. Interacțiunile lui cu ceilalți sunt savuroase, dar cel mai mult mi-au plăcut cele cu Kenji, pline de ironie, energie și acel tip de prietenie care se simte reală și neforțată.
Per total, „Privește-mă” este o combinație reușită de acțiune intensă, emoție și romantism construit lent. Nu este o carte perfectă, pentru că unele momente mi-ar fi plăcut să fie mai dezvoltate, dar experiența de lectură a fost una foarte plăcută. Este genul de continuare care nu doar că readuce un univers iubit, ci îl și extinde într-un mod interesant, lăsându-te curios pentru ce urmează.
Watch Me – Tahereh Mafi (The New Republic, #1)
“Watch Me” by Tahereh Mafi gave me that rare feeling of “home,” because I returned to a universe I absolutely loved, especially since I devoured the „Shatter Me” series. It was the kind of book I started with excitement and read quickly, but carefully, simply because I wanted to linger a little longer in that tense and fascinating world. It feels like a new beginning, yet at the same time it preserves the familiar atmosphere: constant danger, intense emotions, and difficult questions about identity and freedom.
The action is full of energy and suspense, and the pacing doesn’t let you breathe for a second. The story follows James Anderson, Warner’s younger brother, who manages something almost impossible: to infiltrate Ark Island, a mysterious and extremely well-guarded place, considered the last stronghold of the Reestablishment. Even though he ends up directly in a cell, for him that’s still a victory. I really liked his courage, but also the fact that he’s not a typical hero. He has moments of insecurity, jokes even in the most tense situations, and always seems caught between the desire to prove something and the need to understand who he truly is.
At the same time, we get to know Rosabelle Wolff, a character who intrigued me a lot. She is the opposite of James in many ways: calculated, cold, always attentive to rules and order. She lives in a place where every emotion is controlled, and weakness is not allowed. I found it fascinating how, little by little, cracks begin to appear in her armor and how she starts confronting her own feelings. The relationship between her and James develops slowly, with tension and hesitation, and their love story is a slow-burn that keeps you hooked and makes you feel every step forward… and every step back.
One thing I really enjoyed was seeing what happened in the world after the events of the original series. It’s clear that the rebellion changed a lot, and the progress is visible, but at the same time the danger hasn’t completely disappeared. The Reestablishment is not fully defeated and is preparing a serious comeback. I found it interesting how the author shows that victory doesn’t mean the end of the fight, but just the beginning of another stage.
Another strong point for me was the dialogue, especially James’s. He has a sharp sense of humor and very natural lines, which create a perfect balance between tension and lighter moments. His interactions with others are delightful, but I especially loved those with Kenji Kishimoto—full of irony, energy, and that kind of friendship that feels real and effortless.
Overall, “Watch Me” is a successful combination of intense action, emotion, and slow-building romance. It’s not a perfect book, because I would have liked some moments to be more developed, but the reading experience was very enjoyable. It’s the kind of continuation that not only brings back a beloved universe, but also expands it in an interesting way, leaving you curious about what comes next.
