„Dispărut într-o clipă” de Jo Callaghan este, fără exagerare, una dintre cele mai bune cărți thriller pe care le-am citit în ultima perioadă. A fost genul acela de lectură care m-a prins rapid, o poveste tensionată, actuală și extrem de bine gândită, care m-a ținut constant în priză. Mi-a plăcut enorm felul în care autoarea îmbină emoția umană cu tehnologia și reușește să creeze un thriller modern, credibil și foarte bine ancorat în realitatea zilelor noastre.
În centrul poveștii se află Kat, o femeie puternică, dar profund marcată de pierderile prin care a trecut. Este o mamă singură, văduvă și polițistă, care se întoarce la muncă după moartea soțului ei și după ce fiul ei a trecut printr-o perioadă dificilă de depresie. Kat este genul de personaj care se bazează mult pe instincte, pe experiență și pe empatie, mai ales atunci când lucrează cu alte femei aflate în situații vulnerabile. Este o polițistă dură, hotărâtă, dar în același timp extrem de umană, iar acest contrast o face foarte ușor de îndrăgit și de înțeles.
La scurt timp după revenirea ei în activitate, Kat este aleasă să conducă un program-pilot complet diferit de tot ce știa până atunci: o echipă formată dintr-un om și o inteligență artificială. Așa îl cunoaștem pe Lock, o EDIA (entitate detectiv cu inteligență artificială). Deși am mai întâlnit AI în cărți, de cele mai multe ori în romane SF, aici prezența ei într-un thriller a fost o adevărată revelație pentru mine. Inteligența artificială este integrată natural în poveste, fără să pară forțată sau nenaturală, iar rolul ei este esențial pentru desfășurarea anchetelor.
Relația dintre Kat și Lock este una dintre cele mai interesante părți ale cărții. Kat este empatică, emoțională, ghidată de experiență și de intuiție, în timp ce Lock este rigid, analitic și urmează strict regulile pentru care a fost programat. Interacțiunile lor sunt adesea contradictorii, pline de tensiune și replici inteligente. Lock, deși trebuie să asculte ordinele superiorilor, este arogant și se consideră superior oamenilor, pe care îi vede ca fiind lenți și ineficienți. În același timp, are capacitatea de a învăța și de a se adapta, lucru care devine tot mai vizibil pe parcursul poveștii.
Mi-a plăcut mult faptul că Kat se opune inițial folosirii inteligenței artificiale în investigații. Reticența ei este perfect justificată, având în vedere că soțul ei a fost diagnosticat greșit cu ajutorul AI în timpul pandemiei de COVID. Această traumă o face să nu aibă încredere în tehnologie și să creadă că erorile pot avea consecințe grave. Totuși, pe măsură ce acțiunea avansează, Kat începe să vadă și avantajele lui Lock: capacitatea de a analiza volume uriașe de date într-un timp foarte scurt și accesul la baze de date imposibil de gestionat de un om.
Acțiunea este bine ritmată, investigațiile sunt tensionate, iar disparițiile din poveste sunt tratate cu seriozitate și respect față de victime. Totul se leagă foarte bine, iar finalul este satisfăcător și intens. Pentru mine, „Dispărut într-o clipă” este un thriller excelent, inteligent, emoționant și extrem de actual, care ridică întrebări importante despre limitele tehnologiei și despre cât de mult ar trebui să ne bazăm pe ea. O carte de cinci stele, fără îndoială, și una pe care o recomand din toată inima.
In the Blink of an Eye – Jo Callaghan (Kat and Lock, #1)
“In the Blink of an Eye” by Jo Callaghan is, without exaggeration, one of the best thriller novels I’ve read recently. It was the kind of book that hooked me almost immediately—a tense, timely, and extremely well-thought-out story that kept me constantly on edge. I absolutely loved the way the author blends human emotion with technology, creating a modern, believable thriller that is deeply rooted in today’s reality.
At the center of the story is Kat, a strong woman who is nevertheless deeply marked by the losses she has endured. She is a single mother, a widow, and a police officer returning to work after her husband’s death and after her son has gone through a difficult period of depression. Kat is the kind of character who relies heavily on instinct, experience, and empathy, especially when working with other women in vulnerable situations. She is tough and determined, yet at the same time deeply human—and this contrast makes her very easy to like and understand.
Shortly after returning to active duty, Kat is chosen to lead a pilot program unlike anything she has known before: a team made up of a human and an artificial intelligence. This is how we meet Lock, an EDIA (Enhanced Detective Intelligence Agent). Although I’ve encountered AI in books before, usually in science fiction, its presence in a thriller here was a real revelation for me. The artificial intelligence is integrated naturally into the story, without feeling forced or unnatural, and its role is essential to the progress of the investigations.
The relationship between Kat and Lock is one of the most interesting aspects of the book. Kat is empathetic, emotional, and guided by experience and intuition, while Lock is rigid, analytical, and strictly follows the rules he was programmed to obey. Their interactions are often contradictory, full of tension and sharp, intelligent dialogue. Lock, although required to follow his superiors’ orders, is arrogant and considers himself superior to humans, whom he sees as slow and inefficient. At the same time, he has the ability to learn and adapt—something that becomes increasingly evident as the story unfolds.
I really appreciated the fact that Kat initially opposes the use of artificial intelligence in investigations. Her reluctance is perfectly justified, given that her husband was misdiagnosed with the help of AI during the COVID pandemic. This trauma makes her distrust technology and believe that errors can have serious consequences. However, as the action progresses, Kat begins to see Lock’s advantages as well: his ability to analyze enormous volumes of data in a very short time and his access to databases that would be impossible for a human to manage.
The action is well paced, the investigations are tense, and the disappearances in the story are handled with seriousness and respect for the victims. Everything fits together very well, and the ending is both intense and satisfying. For me, “In the Blink of an Eye” is an excellent, intelligent, emotional, and extremely relevant thriller that raises important questions about the limits of technology and how much we should rely on it. A five-star read, without a doubt, and one I wholeheartedly recommend.
