„Coram House” de Bailey Seybolt este un thriller care m-a prins treptat, dar care, odată ce și-a intrat în ritm, m-a captivat deplin. Deși începutul mi s-a părut mai lent și a durat puțin până să mă conectez cu povestea, atmosfera apăsătoare și misterul din jurul vechii clădiri au avut ceva care m-a ținut constant în suspans. Coram House, o fostă casă de copii cu un trecut întunecat, devine rapid un personaj în sine, plin de secrete, traume și adevăruri nespuse.
Povestea o urmărește pe Alex, o jurnalistă de investigație marcată de propriul trecut, care ajunge să cerceteze evenimentele legate de dispariția și moartea unor copii petrecute cu zeci de ani în urmă. Pe măsură ce sapă mai adânc în istoria locului, Alex descoperă legături tulburătoare între trecut și prezent, iar investigația ei capătă o miză tot mai personală. Mi-a plăcut mult felul în care autoarea a construit personajul principal: vulnerabil, încăpățânat, obosit, dar hotărât să afle adevărul, chiar și atunci când acesta doare.
Acțiunea este construită în straturi, alternând între ce s-a întâmplat cândva la Coram House și ceea ce se întâmplă în prezent. Indiciile sunt presărate atent, iar tensiunea crește constant, fără să devină obositoare. Deși, pe parcurs, mi-am creat propriile teorii despre cine ar putea fi criminalul și despre direcția în care va merge povestea, nu am reușit să ghicesc adevărul. Finalul m-a surprins sincer, lucru pe care îl apreciez enorm la un thriller.
Chiar dacă unele dintre scenariile pe care le aveam în minte au mers într-o altă direcție, am fost mulțumită de firul evenimentelor ales de autoare. Totul a avut sens, iar explicațiile nu au părut forțate. Mi-a plăcut modul în care Bailey Seybolt a ales să pună accent nu doar pe crimă, ci și pe efectele ei asupra oamenilor, asupra comunității și asupra celor care au supraviețuit.
Per total, „Coram House” este o lectură tensionată, întunecată și bine construită, care recompensează răbdarea cititorului. Chiar dacă nu m-a cucerit instant, m-a ținut în priză până la final și m-a făcut să întorc pagină după pagină. Un thriller solid, cu atmosferă apăsătoare și un mister care chiar reușește să surprindă.

“Coram House” by Bailey Seybolt is a thriller that drew me in gradually, but once it found its rhythm, it completely captivated me. Although the beginning felt slower to me and it took a while to connect with the story, the oppressive atmosphere and the mystery surrounding the old building had something that kept me constantly on edge. Coram House, a former children’s home with a dark past, quickly becomes a character in its own right, filled with secrets, trauma, and unspoken truths.
The story follows Alex, an investigative journalist marked by her own past, who sets out to investigate events linked to the disappearance and death of children that occurred decades earlier. As she digs deeper into the history of the place, Alex uncovers disturbing connections between past and present, and her investigation becomes increasingly personal. I really liked the way the author built the main character: vulnerable, stubborn, exhausted, yet determined to uncover the truth, even when that truth is painful.
The action is layered, alternating between what happened at Coram House long ago and what is unfolding in the present. Clues are carefully scattered, and the tension builds steadily without becoming overwhelming. Although along the way I formed my own theories about who the killer might be and where the story was headed, I didn’t manage to guess the truth. The ending genuinely surprised me, which I greatly appreciate in a thriller.
Even though some of the scenarios I had in mind went in a different direction, I was satisfied with the course of events chosen by the author. Everything made sense, and the explanations didn’t feel forced. I liked the way Bailey Seybolt chose to focus not only on the crime itself, but also on its effects on people, on the community, and on those who survived.
Overall, “Coram House” is a tense, dark, and well-crafted read that rewards the reader’s patience. Even if it didn’t win me over instantly, it kept me hooked until the very end and made me turn page after page. A solid thriller with a heavy atmosphere and a mystery that truly manages to surprise.
