„Infernul alb” de R.S. Burnett este un thriller rece, intens și apăsător, care m-a prins exact în perioada potrivită. Am citit cartea în plin viscol, iar atmosfera de afară s-a potrivit perfect cu povestea din pagini. Frigul, izolarea și sentimentul de pericol constant au fost mult mai ușor de simțit, ceea ce a făcut experiența de lectură mai puternică și mai realistă.
Povestea o are în centru pe Rachel, o femeie care ajunge în Antarctica pentru a lucra într-o stație izolată, departe de orice urmă de civilizație. De la început, Rachel nu este un personaj simplu sau liniștit. Ea poartă cu ea frustrări, temeri și răni din trecut, iar aceste lucruri ies treptat la suprafață. Mi-a plăcut mult faptul că autoarea nu ne aruncă direct în haos, ci construiește încet personajul, arătându-ne cine este Rachel și de ce a ajuns să facă această alegere extremă.
Un mare plus al cărții este modul în care prezentul se împletește cu trecutul. Capitolele alternează între ce se întâmplă acum, în izolarea albă și periculoasă a Antarcticii, și momente din viața anterioară a lui Rachel. Astfel, povestea capătă mai mult sens, iar deciziile ei devin mai ușor de înțeles. Am simțit că această structură a ajutat mult la legarea firelor narative și la conturarea trăirilor interioare ale personajului: frica, vinovăția, singurătatea și dorința de a fugi de trecut.
Pe măsură ce acțiunea avansează, tensiunea crește. Izolarea devine tot mai apăsătoare, iar lucrurile încep să scape de sub control. Rachel ajunge să se îndoiască de tot ce știe, de ce vede și chiar de propria minte. Atmosfera este claustrofobică, rece și neliniștitoare, iar senzația că ceva nu este în regulă persistă constant. Pentru un roman de debut, cartea este scrisă surprinzător de bine, cu descrieri eficiente și o stare de neliniște care se menține pe tot parcursul lecturii.
Totuși, i-am acordat 4 stele, nu 5, deoarece am simțit că ritmul este uneori prea lent, iar anumite pasaje sunt ușor lungite. De asemenea, plot twist-ul principal mi-a fost destul de familiar. Ideea personajului izolat într-un loc extrem, care este manipulat să creadă că lumea s-a sfârșit, am mai întâlnit-o și în alte thrillere. Chiar dacă este bine executată, nu m-a surprins complet.
Per total, „Infernul alb” este o lectură interesantă, atmosferică și potrivită mai ales pentru iubitorii de thrillere psihologice și povești despre supraviețuire. Este o carte care se simte mai intens dacă este citită iarna, când frigul de afară te ajută să intri mai ușor în poveste. Un debut promițător, cu personaje bine construite și o atmosferă memorabilă, chiar dacă nu lipsită de mici minusuri.

“Whiteout” by R.S. Burnett is a cold, intense, and oppressive thriller that caught me at exactly the right moment. I read the book in the middle of a snowstorm, and the atmosphere outside matched the story on the pages perfectly. The cold, the isolation, and the constant sense of danger were much easier to feel, which made the reading experience stronger and more realistic.
The story centers on Rachel, a woman who travels to Antarctica to work at an isolated station, far from any trace of civilization. From the very beginning, Rachel is not a simple or calm character. She carries frustrations, fears, and wounds from her past, and these gradually rise to the surface. I really liked the fact that the author doesn’t throw us straight into chaos, but instead slowly builds the character, showing us who Rachel is and why she made such an extreme choice.
A major strength of the book is the way the present intertwines with the past. The chapters alternate between what is happening now, in the white and dangerous isolation of Antarctica, and moments from Rachel’s previous life. This gives the story more depth and makes her decisions easier to understand. I felt that this structure helped connect the narrative threads and shape the character’s inner struggles: fear, guilt, loneliness, and the desire to escape the past.
As the story progresses, the tension increases. The isolation becomes more and more oppressive, and things start to spiral out of control. Rachel begins to doubt everything she knows—what she sees, what she believes, and even her own mind. The atmosphere is claustrophobic, cold, and unsettling, and the feeling that something is wrong is constantly present. For a debut novel, the book is surprisingly well written, with effective descriptions and a sense of unease that lasts throughout the entire reading experience.
Still, I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because I felt the pacing was sometimes too slow, and certain passages were slightly stretched out. The main plot twist also felt quite familiar to me. The idea of a character isolated in an extreme location, manipulated into believing that the world has ended, is something I’ve encountered in other thrillers before. Even though it’s well executed, it didn’t completely surprise me.
Overall, “Whiteout” is an engaging, atmospheric read, especially suitable for fans of psychological thrillers and survival stories. It’s a book that feels more intense when read in winter, when the cold outside helps you sink deeper into the story. A promising debut, with well-built characters and a memorable atmosphere, even if it’s not without a few small flaws.
