„Acasă înaintea nopții” de Riley Sager este, pentru mine, una dintre cele mai reușite lecturi din ultima perioadă, o carte care m-a prins încet, dar sigur, și nu mi-a mai dat drumul până la final. Este genul de poveste care nu se bazează pe acțiune alertă, ci pe atmosferă, tensiune și senzația aceea constantă că ceva nu este în regulă. O carte care se strecoară pe sub piele și rămâne acolo mult timp după ce ai închis ultima pagină.
Povestea o are în centru pe Maggie Holt, care se întoarce, după mulți ani, în Baneberry Hall – casa în care a locuit doar câteva săptămâni când era copil. Tatăl ei a devenit celebru după ce a scris o carte despre acea perioadă, prezentând casa ca fiind bântuită și plină de fenomene paranormale. Maggie, însă, nu își amintește nimic din acele întâmplări și a crescut convinsă că totul a fost o exagerare sau o minciună menită să vândă cărți. Revenirea ei în acea casă are un scop clar: să demonstreze că nu există fantome și că adevărul este unul logic.
Un mare punct forte al romanului este alternarea capitolelor din prezent, trăite de Maggie, cu fragmente din cartea tatălui ei, care descriu evenimentele din trecut. Partea aceasta, cu accente puternice de horror și paranormal, mi-a plăcut enorm. Este scrisă atât de intens și de sugestiv, încât mi-a dat fiori reali și m-a făcut, pentru câteva momente, să cred cu adevărat în fantome, în umbre care se mișcă singure și în case care ascund ceva viu între pereții lor. Atmosfera este apăsătoare, întunecată și extrem de bine construită.
Deși ritmul poveștii nu este alert, stilul lui Riley Sager te ține constant conectat la ceea ce se întâmplă. Fiecare detaliu contează, fiecare zgomot, fiecare ușă care scârțâie, fiecare privire suspectă. Am simțit mereu că sunt și eu acolo, alături de Maggie, explorând casa, încercând să pun cap la cap indicii și să-mi dau seama cine spune adevărul.
Personajele sunt bine construite și au suficientă profunzime cât să pară reale, dar păstrează mereu o doză de mister. Nimeni nu este complet transparent, iar acest lucru face lectura și mai interesantă. Mi-a plăcut mult felul în care autorul m-a dus pe piste greșite, făcându-mă să suspectez, pe rând, aproape fiecare personaj. La un moment dat, aveam impresia că toți sunt vinovați pentru lucrurile ciudate care se întâmplă în acea casă, iar această stare de confuzie controlată este extrem de bine realizată.
„Acasă înaintea nopții” este o combinație excelentă de thriller psihologic și horror, cu o atmosferă care te captivează imediat. Este o carte care se savurează încet, dar care te recompensează din plin. Pentru mine, a fost o lectură de cinci stele, una care m-a speriat, m-a intrigat și m-a făcut să iubesc din nou poveștile cu case vechi și bântuite, secrete bine ascunse și adevăruri care ies la iveală doar după lăsarea nopții.

„Home Before Dark” by Riley Sager is, for me, one of the most successful reads of recent times—a book that pulled me in slowly but surely and refused to let go until the very end. It’s the kind of story that doesn’t rely on fast-paced action, but on atmosphere, tension, and that constant feeling that something just isn’t right. A book that creeps under your skin and stays there long after you’ve closed the final page.
The story centers on Maggie Holt, who returns, after many years, to Baneberry Hall—the house where she lived for only a few weeks as a child. Her father became famous after writing a book about that time, portraying the house as haunted and full of paranormal phenomena. Maggie, however, remembers nothing of those events and grew up convinced that everything was exaggerated or even fabricated to sell books. Her return to the house has a clear purpose: to prove that there are no ghosts and that the truth has a logical explanation.
One of the novel’s greatest strengths is the alternation between chapters set in the present, experienced by Maggie, and excerpts from her father’s book, which describe the events of the past. This part, with its strong horror and paranormal elements, I absolutely loved. It’s written so intensely and vividly that it gave me genuine chills and made me, for a few moments, truly believe in ghosts, in shadows that move on their own, and in houses that hide something alive within their walls. The atmosphere is oppressive, dark, and extremely well crafted.
Although the pace of the story isn’t fast, Riley Sager’s writing keeps you constantly engaged with what’s happening. Every detail matters—every noise, every creaking door, every suspicious glance. I always felt like I was there too, alongside Maggie, exploring the house, trying to piece together clues and figure out who was telling the truth.
The characters are well developed and have enough depth to feel real, yet they always retain an air of mystery. No one is completely transparent, which makes the reading experience even more compelling. I really enjoyed how the author led me down false paths, making me suspect almost every character in turn. At one point, I felt like everyone was guilty of the strange things happening in that house, and this sense of controlled confusion is extremely well done.
„Home Before Dark” is an excellent blend of psychological thriller and horror, with an atmosphere that grips you immediately. It’s a book to be savored slowly, but one that rewards you fully. For me, it was a five-star read—one that scared me, intrigued me, and made me fall in love all over again with stories about old, haunted houses, well-hidden secrets, and truths that come to light only after night falls.
