„Berlin. Cartea a doua: Oraș de fum” de Jason Lutes continuă povestea fascinantă începută în „Oraș de piatră”, ducându-ne mai adânc în inima unui Berlin aflat între vis și prăbușire. Este o carte grafică puternică, care vorbește despre oameni simpli prinși într-o lume ce se schimbă prea repede, iar această complexitate umană m-a făcut să o citesc cu sufletul la gură.
Acțiunea se petrece în anii tulburi de după Primul Război Mondial, când Germania se clatină între speranță și haos. În centrul poveștii îi regăsim pe Marthe Müller, tânăra artistă care încearcă să-și găsească vocea într-un oraș plin de pasiune și tensiune, și pe jurnalistul Kurt Severing, un om care luptă cu propriile convingeri și cu realitatea tot mai întunecată din jurul său. Între ei se simte o legătură fragilă, dar profundă — un amestec de iubire, respect și neputință în fața lumii care se destramă.
Mi-a plăcut mult cum Jason Lutes arată Berlinul ca pe un organism viu: fiecare stradă, fiecare clădire și fiecare privire are o poveste. În paginile sale se simte mirosul fumului, zgomotul tramvaielor, agitația cafenelelor și frica ce începe să se strecoare în suflete. Desenele alb-negru sunt incredibil de expresive, parcă poți atinge atmosfera grea a acelor ani, în care arta, politica și viața se amestecă într-un tablou plin de contrast.
Cartea nu este doar despre un oraș, ci despre oameni care caută sensul într-o lume care pare să-l piardă. Marthe vrea să se afirme ca artistă, dar se lovește de prejudecăți și de o societate care o vrea tăcută. Kurt, în schimb, începe să-și piardă credința în puterea cuvântului scris, în timp ce vede cum ura și ideologiile extreme câștigă teren. Împreună, ei reprezintă lupta dintre artă și realitate, dintre ideal și dezamăgire.
Pentru mine, „Oraș de fum” a fost o experiență vizuală și emoțională intensă. Este genul de carte care te face să te oprești din citit doar ca să privești mai atent o imagine sau să recitești o replică. Te lasă cu un gust amar, dar și cu admirație pentru modul în care autorul reușește să redea un moment istoric atât de complex prin povești intime și sincere.
O recomand din tot sufletul tuturor celor care iubesc romanele grafice cu profunzime, celor pasionați de istorie și de povești despre oameni adevărați, cu slăbiciuni și visuri fragile. „Berlin. Cartea a doua: Oraș de fum” nu este doar o lectură, ci o călătorie în timp — una care te face să vezi cum, chiar și în mijlocul ruinelor, arta și umanitatea pot încă să ardă.

I really loved how Jason Lutes portrays Berlin as a living organism: every street, every building, every glance has a story to tell. In his pages, you can almost smell the smoke, hear the clatter of trams, feel the buzz of cafés, and sense the creeping fear entering people’s hearts. The black-and-white drawings are incredibly expressive — it’s as if you can touch the heavy atmosphere of those years, where art, politics, and everyday life blend into a vivid, contrasting canvas.
This book isn’t just about a city — it’s about people searching for meaning in a world that seems to have lost it. Marthe wants to prove herself as an artist but faces prejudice and a society that wants her to remain silent. Kurt, on the other hand, begins to lose faith in the power of the written word as he witnesses hatred and extreme ideologies gaining ground. Together, they embody the struggle between art and reality, between idealism and disillusionment.
For me, „City of Smoke” was an intense visual and emotional experience. It’s the kind of book that makes you stop reading just to study an image more closely or reread a line. It leaves you with a bittersweet feeling, but also with admiration for how the author captures such a complex historical moment through intimate and sincere stories.
I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who loves deep, meaningful graphic novels — to those passionate about history and stories of real people, with their weaknesses and fragile dreams. „Berlin.
