Am descoperit „Fecioara” de Kate Foster ca pe o călătorie înapoi în timp, într-un Edinburgh rece și neiertător al anului 1679. Atmosfera este atât de intensă, încât am simțit că merg și eu pe străzile pietruite, că aud șoaptele din taverne și zvonurile care se rostogolesc mai repede decât adevărul.
În centrul poveștii se află Lady Christian, o tânără acuzată de crimă și de adulter. Ea este arestată și dusă în fața justiției pentru moartea lordului James Forrester, bărbatul de care era îndrăgostită. De la început, mi-a fost imposibil să nu mă atașez de ea. Este curajoasă, dar și vulnerabilă, prinsă într-o lume care nu vrea să îi asculte vocea. Orice ar spune, nimeni nu pare dispus să creadă versiunea ei.
Lordul James Forrester, chiar dacă nu este atât de prezent direct, are un rol uriaș în poveste. El rămâne o figură misterioasă, un om cu secrete și contradicții, care pare să fi atras după sine nu doar dragostea, ci și pierzania lui Lady Christian. M-a intrigat modul în care imaginea lui se schimbă, în funcție de cine povestește despre el.
Ceea ce m-a impresionat cel mai mult este felul în care societatea, cu prejudecățile și legile ei dure, devine aproape un personaj principal. O vezi cum condamnă înainte de a asculta, cum pedepsește femeile nu doar pentru greșeli reale, ci și pentru simplul fapt că au dorințe și îndrăznesc să trăiască altfel. În permanență simți apăsarea acestei lumi, iar tensiunea psihologică crește cu fiecare pagină.
Cartea nu este doar o poveste istorică despre crimă și iubire, ci și o reflecție asupra dreptății și a rolului femeilor. Mi-a plăcut mult felul în care Kate Foster a scris, echilibrând descrierile bogate cu dialoguri vii și cu gândurile interioare ale protagonistei. Totul curge natural și reușește să te țină captivat până la final.
Pentru mine, „Fecioara” a fost mai mult decât un roman istoric. A fost o experiență intensă, care m-a făcut să simt frustrare, furie, dar și admirație pentru puterea unei femei de a lupta pentru adevărul ei, chiar atunci când nimeni nu voia să îl audă. Este o poveste care mi-a rămas în minte și care cu siguranță merită cinci stele.

I discovered „The Maiden” by Kate Foster as a journey back in time, into a cold and unforgiving Edinburgh of 1679. The atmosphere is so intense that I felt as if I were walking the cobbled streets myself, hearing the whispers in the taverns and the rumors spreading faster than the truth.
At the heart of the story stands Lady Christian, a young woman accused of murder and adultery. She is arrested and brought before justice for the death of Lord James Forrester, the man she loved. From the very beginning, it was impossible not to grow attached to her. She is brave, yet vulnerable, trapped in a world that refuses to hear her voice. No matter what she says, no one seems willing to believe her side of the story.
Lord James Forrester, even though not directly present throughout, plays a huge role in the narrative. He remains a mysterious figure, a man full of secrets and contradictions, who seems to have brought not only love but also ruin to Lady Christian. I was intrigued by how his image shifts depending on who is telling the story.
What impressed me the most is the way society, with its prejudices and harsh laws, almost becomes a main character itself. You see how it condemns before listening, how it punishes women not only for real mistakes but also simply for having desires and daring to live differently. You constantly feel the weight of this world, while the psychological tension grows with every page.
The book is not just a historical tale of crime and love, but also a reflection on justice and the role of women. I really liked the way Kate Foster wrote, balancing rich descriptions with vivid dialogues and the inner thoughts of the protagonist. Everything flows naturally and keeps you captivated until the very end.
For me, „The Maiden” was more than a historical novel. It was an intense experience that made me feel frustration, anger, but also admiration for the strength of a woman fighting for her truth, even when no one wanted to hear it. It is a story that has stayed with me and one that definitely deserves five stars.
