Am citit „Leather & Lark” de Brynne Weaver cu destulă curiozitate, mai ales că am apreciat primul volum al autoarei pentru umorul său negru și personajele bine conturate. Din păcate, de data aceasta nu am fost la fel de impresionată. Cartea are idei bune și câteva momente tensionate, dar pentru mine a rămas mai degrabă o lectură de trei stele, nu una memorabilă.
Personajele principale, Lark Montague și Lachlan Kane, au potențial, dar nu am simțit aceeași profunzime ca în volumul anterior. Lark, cu toată energia și farmecul ei de suprafață, mi s-a părut mai puțin complexă decât mă așteptam, iar motivațiile ei nu au fost întotdeauna convingătoare. Lachlan, asasinul cu un trecut dificil, ar fi putut fi fascinant, însă am simțit că nu a fost dezvoltat pe deplin. Relația lor, bazată pe o căsătorie de conveniență, promitea chimie și conflicte interioare mai puternice, dar mi s-a părut că uneori lipsește scânteia emoțională.
Am apreciat totuși atmosfera tensionată și unele scene de acțiune care m-au ținut atentă. Weaver știe să creeze momente pline de suspans și să exploreze teme întunecate. Totuși, umorul negru care m-a cucerit în primul volum a lipsit aproape complet aici, iar acest lucru a făcut povestea să pară mai greoaie și mai sumbră, fără acele scurte momente de respiro care să echilibreze violența și drama.
În plus, ritmul a avut probleme: începutul m-a prins destul de repede, dar partea de mijloc a fost încărcată cu detalii care nu adăugau prea multă profunzime poveștii, iar finalul s-a simțit grăbit. Scenele violente, deși intense, au părut uneori adăugate doar pentru efect de șoc, nu pentru a adânci povestea sau a întări motivațiile personajelor.
Per total, „Leather & Lark” nu este o carte rea, dar nici nu a reușit să mă cucerească așa cum speram. Pentru cei care caută o poveste romantică întunecată, cu acțiune și tensiune, ar putea fi totuși o lectură interesantă. Pentru mine, însă, lipsa umorului negru și construcția mai slabă a personajelor au făcut ca această continuare să fie mai puțin memorabilă.

I read „Leather & Lark” by Brynne Weaver with quite a bit of curiosity, especially since I enjoyed the author’s first book for its dark humor and well-developed characters. Unfortunately, this time I wasn’t as impressed. The book has good ideas and a few tense moments, but for me, it ended up being more of a three-star read rather than a memorable one.
The main characters, Lark Montague and Lachlan Kane, have potential, but I didn’t feel the same depth as in the previous book. Lark, with all her energy and surface-level charm, felt less complex than I expected, and her motivations weren’t always convincing. Lachlan, the assassin with a difficult past, could have been fascinating, but I felt he wasn’t fully developed. Their relationship, based on a marriage of convenience, promised stronger chemistry and inner conflict, but at times it lacked emotional spark.
I did appreciate the tense atmosphere and some action scenes that kept me engaged. Weaver knows how to create suspenseful moments and explore dark themes. However, the dark humor that won me over in the first book was almost completely absent here, making the story feel heavier and gloomier without those brief moments of relief to balance out the violence and drama.
Additionally, the pacing had issues: the beginning hooked me fairly quickly, but the middle was bogged down with details that didn’t add much depth to the story, and the ending felt rushed. The violent scenes, while intense, sometimes seemed included just for shock value rather than to deepen the story or strengthen the characters’ motivations.
Overall, „Leather & Lark” isn’t a bad book, but it didn’t win me over the way I’d hoped. For readers looking for a dark romantic story with action and tension, it could still be an interesting read. For me, however, the lack of dark humor and weaker character development made this sequel less memorable.
